Yeah. The Return of Barry Allen is the single greatest Flash story of all time and ultimately made me a Wally West fan for life.
Yes! I started "Return" feeling a little iffy about the art and thinking it could be one of those overhyped 90s stories. Ended it by thinking "this should be a goddamn movie".

I wonder what Superman’s big ‘moment’ will be in this film. That one scene - not necessarily in the climatic act - which showcases his sheer power and strength.

In Superman 1978, it was his guttural roar followed by him flying round the planet faster than the speed of light to turn back time and save Lois.

In Superman Returns, it was him lifting an island - hundreds of thousands of tons of rock - full of Kryptonite into space before passing out.

In Man of Steel, it was him standing below the gravity beam of the world destroyer - enough immense pressure to terraform an entire planet pushing down on him - summoning the strength to fly into it and destroy it.

Well, looking at James Gunn’s last few forays into the superhero genre, usually the big moment is more of an emotional motivation for the main hero to gather the strength to get back up/stand up against the main threat/villain near the middle/end of the third act, than a strictly physical feat of strength.

So, I imagine it’ll be a moment near the end of the film. Hypothetically, maybe Superman has really taken a beating and is really struggling to get back up. Then, a voice, let’s say it’s a little kid, starts encouraging him to get back up and that he’s got this, or something like that. Then, gradually, more and more people in the city join in, until it finally becomes a deafening cacophony. All of the support from everyone in Metropolis is enough for Superman to dig deep and muster the strength and will to get back up and keep going. (Hell, if you want to make the moment even better and more impactful, have whatever is happening with Superman being livestreamed or something and everyone in the entire world is watching and joins in on the chanting.)

I think going that route instead of just having a showcase of strength would be a great contrast to the previous film portrayals and really show what makes this Superman so different and great. And, from all of the set pics we’ve seen so far, they’re making much more of an effort to make Metropolis feel like its own character and having Superman become more connected to it and it’s people by becoming one of them. It’s not just about his own power and strength, but also about the emotional power he gathers from those he saves and who support/love him to do what he does. That’s Superman.

Mister Terrific being annoyed at having to track down a dog when there are other, bigger problems to solve would be totally on brand for the character in the comics.

For anyone interested in the character, I totally recommend the comic series The Terrifics by Jeff Lemire and then Gene Luen Yang. It’s a blast. It also features Metamorpho, so you can get familiar with both characters. But it’s a really fun run.

Also a big Waid fan, and Kingdom Come isn't even in my Top 3 of his. To underplay his mammoth run on Flash is crazy to me.
I haven't read his entire run, but Mark's work on Captain America was also great. I adore Man Out of Time.

He has a real knack for taking classic heroes who people say are out of date and proving their relevance to a cynical modern world without either trying to change their core or falling back on nostalgia.

Given how troubled big screen Superman adaptations have been for the 20 twenty years that is no insignificant skill as a writer.

Very much agreed (although a friendly reminder that Grant uses they/them. I accidentally did the same thing but caught it on my final proofread).

I really love All-Star (despite its very outdated approach to Clark and Lois) and I tremendously respect Grant's talent, but generally speaking they ain't my jam. Filling everything with wacky Silver Age characters ain't really my thing. Their Batman really doesn't match my taste.
Besides Superman and Wonder Woman who are basically “Gods” , somebody has to fit the bill for that tech. Interesting on how Gunn uses Wayne enterp
Okay, I'm starting to get frustrated.

What is with the internet's hate-motivation for this film? Seriously - constant memes flooding my feeds from geek pages just nonstop clowning on the film, so far. Putting David next to 'gigachad' Henry, making James Gunn sound like a franchise ruiner, etc.

Since when did people start treating Gunn like they do Kathleen Kennedy?
Relax, this is by far the most anticipated movie coming out in 2025. I don’t even see chatter or anything about Captain America, FF4, Blade, or Jurassic Park, or Thunderbolts. Superman is were you get your clicks and views.

Yeah, I honestly can't remember what the reception online was to Man of Steel while it was shooting, my memory is not the best. I do, however, remember Robert Pattinson getting meme'd to death and hearing The Batman was going to be terrible. Not the case. Same with Joaquin Phoenix's Joker, and Heath Ledger casting as Joker. Maybe it's just a DC thing... but hey, at least it leads to something great? Lol!
Good lord the hate for the Joker and The Batman was on Star Wars level of toxic.

So basically the climax of the Zero Day battle with Parasite from season 1 of MAWS?

-Really cool to see Gunn signing stuff for fans
-Possibly Nathan Fillion spotted (of course in a hoodie lol)
-Bus named "Comet Trailways" (Comet being Supergirls horse's name.)

it seems Nathan Fillion was spotted on set

but, they didn't catch what he was filming, just him leaving
(but since he was in a hooded jacket, and people surrounding him with umbrellas) he was most likely in costume and hair

it'll be interesting to see if anyone did get shots on set before he left

The lead up to MoS was easily the best time I've ever had as a fan. It was incredibly bliss for me during those times and was the reason why I committed and got immersed into online and forum culture.

Yeah honestly as someone who doesn’t care for the movie, I will say the hype period for MoS was extremely positive and joyful. Morale here was great. I think we were all expecting Supes to get his own “Nolan trilogy” so to speak. It wasn’t til the reviews started showing up on RT in the days before release that it all started crumbling.

Well FF4 is a period piece which I'm guessing people are turned off by and dies anyone really think Blade is getting made? Aren't they bringing in yet another new writer?

Regardless, it was still incredible times and a behemoth to behold, all in the midst of the MCU leading up to Endgame and the release of the Snyder Cut after the theatrical release of JL. The time stamp and barriers has its place in CBM lore and will forever be talked about. It all led up to this, as all-things pop culture and entertainment does. These circles are a rendezvous and larger than life; figuratively speaking. Who is knows what's coming next lol.

Yup, that's how I remember it. Everything felt so fresh, exciting and kind of unquestioned to me. There were very few comparisons to previous movies. I campaigned for Henry to get it, so was over the moon when he did. Plot leaks all sounded good. Casting was pretty cool - lots of A listers to give weight to the idea it had to be good if they signed on. Set pics were applauded (and scrutinised of course 😅). They dropped some fun treasure hints of stuff for us to follow... and MAN were those trailers phenomenal. What a high!😍🤩🥰

There was a fair bit of trust on my end (mostly because of Nolan) that we were getting something both high quality and faithful/respectful to the source material (though on reflection, I feel naive for that). So just as flickchick mentioned, those first few reviews were a bit of a shock. I tried to ignore them, tried to rationalise that I've often enjoyed movies with bad RT scores. Right up until the film began I was still trying to love that movie... but within the first 30 mins, I understood with a slow sinking feeling that, at least for me, the critical reception was bang on (and that's outside of pa kent/neck snap controversy).

I wish I'd been on twitter at the time though. I keep hearing that there was a lot of anti snyder criticism on there before the film came out, but I have no idea how true it is. Personally I actually liked him more than most. Enjoyed 300, Watchmen, Owls of Ga'Hoole etc. I even liked Sucker Punch enough to make a cheesy fan video 😅

So yeah, all I can say is it was a very exciting time, and at least here on SHH, I felt like there wasn't much conflict around it other than the usual things, like whether he should have trunks or not, or whether Clark or Superman should be the disguise 😂

The problem with Blade is vampire fatigue is bigger than Superhero fatigue. It really sounds like they are doing Blade because Ali wanted to play the character and Fiegi couldn’t say “no” for some reason.

That’s body positivity, *****.

Big Belly Burger has been such a constant part of my favorite fictional universe for so long, I had built it up in my head to be like...the 2nd coming of In-N-Out.

But no, that's some discount Burger King s*** right there.

:o
I'm getting Paunch Burger flashbacks...
