The Daily Planet - Superman News and Speculation Thread (🚨TAG SPOILERS🚨)

Sadly Superman has so much pressure on it from the comic book movie community that the first trailer can actually break the movie if it is received negatively. This could easily be a BVS finale trailer situation on steroids.

There's a subset of Superman fans that are still hung up on Snyders version that they likely aren't gonna end up even giving this a chance. Heck, some of them are angry that Gunn has a social media presence, or even mentioning that he doesn't need to give Matt Reeves notes. I'm just seeing a lot of unfairness thrown his way, when it's not warranted because we haven't even seen anything from his DCU yet. Which is funny considering, what we do have to go by regarding Gunn, is a pretty damn good track record with films.

How about the Batman 2 rumors and Pattinson becoming Cyclops for Secret Wars. This WB/DC hate is over the top. I bet Creature Commandos is going to get lots of coverage next week because some folks want the DCU to fail before it even starts.

COUNT ON IT!

I wish more people were as vocal as you in regards to their SUPPORT of, Gunn

I remember Blankman and 90s TV shows like Night Man, M.A.N.T.I.S. , and My Secret Identity .

I was a bit too young to catch The Greatest American Hero, but I watched the pilot episode , and it actually wasn't bad .

It wasn't till recently that I saw that John Ritter made a superhero comedy film called Hero At Large

LOVED Night Man as a kid. Haven't seen or even thought about that show in such a long time.

Ultimately , good product is going to be what persuades the General Audience and fans alike.

Fair or Not, WB has done alot of damage to the DC brand in terms of live action films , and the only way you assuage doubts ,
is by producing high quality product which most people enjoy.

Fair or not, he's not gonna get the benefit of the doubt until alot of fans, and the GA, see something they like and enjoy.

Until then though, what's left is the perception and reputation WB made for themselves over the past decade of films , failed projects, and disappointments.

But if Gunn's product resonates with most Audiences, fans, and critics, you'll see alot of the doubts fade .

I hear all of you. It’s just sad that I will have to block anything Superman related on my social media platforms so I can enjoy the first trailer. It just shouldn’t be like this.

You could just not pay attention to what nobodies on social media say. None of them think for themselves and half of them aren't real anyways.

And if you want to know the truth, the ones putting too much pressure on this film/trailer is all of you. The vast majority of people don't care and won't even really pay attention until well into next year.

It's just a trailer, and a first one at that. It is not going to make it break the film. I know we like to pretend it is the end all be all but it really isn't. Most people will forget it (good or bad) a day after it premieres. Sure we will nitpick it to death, but in the end it will mean very little in and of itself.

Just relax and enjoy the ride.

Really gotten annoyed at the absurd amount of "This trailer is 'Do or Die' for Superman" claims from "insiders."

It's. A. Trailer.

The film itself has to work, above all else.

We're just forgetting (whether by convenience or ignorance) how Man of Steel failed to deliver the goods after it's incredible marketing, huh.

I don’t think the trailer is make or break. But I do think the movie itself has a great chance of complete failure because audiences have been burned on DC and Superman so many times- regardless of the reception to the trailer.

Those Maxwell Lord jackets are so damn ugly I can’t believe Gunn okayed those designs. From a story standpoint I’m sure I’ll like his upcoming DC work, but I really question his taste when it comes to costume design.

I just hope I like his Batman and Robin suits better than his Superman (decent but I don’t love it) and GL (just awful!) suits

At the very least it makes sense to me that Gunn wants this trailer to be as good as possible. Superman deserves that first of all. But a strong first impression is a great thing to have. There is a lot riding on this movie and it does have to overcome the issues of the DCU and even some of the shaky MCU entries of the past few years. Hit people with some positivity and show the potential that is obviously still there for superhero films.

The movie can overcome an iffy first trailer since it's Superman. A great movie and word of mouth can bring it into a good place. The key is making a good movie since no trailer can fix a broken film. But there's no reason to start badly if you can avoid it! Hopefully the trailer he's satisfied with will be amazing.

I will say that I’m still a bit iffy on his Superman suit design. Guy and Hawkgirl I don’t really care about, but Superman has to look heroic and majestic. Maybe if we had nothing between the Superman Returns suit (which I think was awful) and this, I wouldn’t have too much of an issue with the new suit. But in that time we had the MOS suit (which was damn near perfect even if the movie wasn’t), the BvS/JL suits (which were a little overdone but decent), the Superman & Lois suits (which are good) and the Routh Crisis/Kingdom Come suit (which was pretty great even if it looked a little cheap at times).

As for the new suit, I hated what I saw in the initial picture. But having seen the set photos, it definitely grew on me, especially the bright colors. That said… I still think it could have been better. I don’t hate the collar as much as I originally did, but I still wish the neck was open. I also don’t understand the weird bulky look, and the cape attachment looks strange. But maybe it will look better in the movie. All that said, I still expect Gunn to give us a good movie, and I love the cast. So even if the suit leaves something to be desired (for me at least) it’s not the most important thing. Still, I think it could have been better. But if everything else works amazingly, then it won’t matter IMO.

The funny thing is, the snyderbro toxicity in some ways generates more support. I think there are some who will likely err on the side of praise simply because they don't want the other side to 'win' 😅

I must be in the minority here then, cause I don’t feel like bald Gunn should be giving Reeves ANY script notes at all, especially if his bald head wasn’t there for the first one, while also being a different universe.

I think anything over 500 million would be a win. The reviews should be good. All of Gunn's superhero films have been critically acclaimed. Marketing is important but secondary compared to the actual product. Gunn needs to deliver a four quadrant crowd pleaser. I think he will.

I've been muting accounts with 'bashing' tendencies. I recommend it. My feed has become much less aggravating.

I just find it annoying how, at least online, there's groups of people that either resent Gunn over the cavill situation, so they get annoyed at everything he does, or there are ones who come across as film snobs that think Gunn is trying to sabotage Matt Reeves vision. Or, to an extent, think he doesn't have the credentials to even comment on what he's doing.

Those are the two groups that seem to have it in for this guy, and while I absolutely agree these people aren't the real world, it still makes discussing things online feel not even worth it.

I've watched trailers for films in the past and completely avoided the film because of it.

I've also watched trailers for films that were not even on my radar but I ended up watching them because the trailers were so good.
But sometimes, a trailer "lies", ie, MoS, BvS.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice...

Would people really prefer Zaslav give Reeves notes? Part II is gonna be a $150M-$200M film. He's gonna get notes from someone. Notes also aren't inherently bad or mandatory.

All true. But honestly, the pure joy those MOS trailers produced was still a fun high to ride.

I don't see this trailer as being a full indicator of whether I'll love the movie. I do however, see it as a potential giant pot of golden dopamine waiting to be released 😅
