Superman being a hit is obviously enormously possible but we all know it'll be a gigantic, chaotic dumpster fire if it doesn't meet whatever their threshold is. It'll be the same thing that happens every time there's a big disaster with blockbusters: panicked, frantic course correction.

The biggest fear of any course correction is "To What?"

In their panic what do they do. They have a good storyteller, director and cast, with what should be an interesting story.

I fear if this fails, where to they panic and go create from this.

The problem is Superman’s threshold is probably a billion dollars. I guarantee you that the Hollywood Reporter, Deadline, and Variety will build this movie up with big expectations. So let’s just say it makes 90 million opening weekend it will be considered s disappointment. Don’t let FF4 opening weekend beat it like Thor Ragnarock beat the Justice League. Superman has lots of pressure on it no matter how much some on the board thinks WB will be happy with 700 million or Man of Steel numbers. No it won’t. Jurassic and FF4 can get away with those numbers but not Supes.

My personal threshold is 700 million WW. Man of Steel was unable to break that.

Jesus...there is no way this is true. You are letting your anxiety turn things way too bleak.

I'm reasonably confident we're passed the point of a billion being seen as a realistic scenario even for movies that are much bigger deals than this. Exclusively huge family films, Avatar and the biggest Marvel stuff have that expectation. I don't think even executives as rock stupid as the people at Discovery think this will do that.

Hence why they needed RDJ for the next Avengers movie.

Don't you guys ever tire of finding things to go negative about? Isn't the whole idea of this to have fun? I mean worrying about the box office of a film that has 1 trailer and isnt out until the summer (and has had almost no reshoots or drama except comments from one dude who was ******** he didn't get invited to the trailer premiere) is pretty crazy. I mean maybe if this was still the previous incarnation but in the here and now?

I mean you do you its your life but things are bleak enough these days I guess I would rather enjoy the ride. YMMV.

Sort of depends. For me when it's a movie I have no emotional investment in and not a lot of interest in I'm still very interested in the film industry and the production of movies so that's the element that holds my attention. It's not bleak or depressing for me to think about the BTS chaos of these movies, it's just amusing small talk.

I have no anxiety. Superman will be a hit. There is no movie coming out this year with more expectations. Fans are judging the movie on extras and .5 seconds of Superman doing a barrel role because his eyes are wonky. You seem to think the pressure is all made up. It’s not. WB and Gunn are confident that is what matters.

I am not talking about you...im talking about the people who do have an emotional investment. Your feelings on all this are quite clear :o

I speak only for me, but if I am excited for something I dont hedge my bet to avoid disappointment. (sometimes in sports) I just try and have fun. Looking for ways to not enjoy myself is just not on my radar anymore.

I think the pressure is not nearly as big as you think it is. You take what geeks like us and the ones you watch on youtube say and extrapolate that out writ large. Meanwhile not one person I know IRL (all of whom always find ways to discuss Superman films, even if negative, with me because they know he is my A#1) have even mentioned any of the nitpicks we have around here. Ya know why...because they dont care or even notice. Hell the barrel roll thing that got discussed around here, even I didn't notice it until the second watch and it didn't bug me until I read about it here.

WB/Discovery has about a million problems at the moment, almost none of which have to do with DC or Superman in general. Unlike us, who have blown this film up into being the end all be all, they have other things they need to work on as a studio and as a failing corporation. As long as the trailers get views for now and the reaction is majority positive they aren't even worried. If they were, we would know it because they leak like a 1000 year old sieve.

Look, if Superman fails all hell will break loose. If it is even a small success (and well received) nothing bad will happen. It is not a property that is expected to make Dark Knight numbers. (neither was Batman in the new millennium prior to Begins) It just needs to be a solid foundation from which to build off of and make enough money to warrant a sequel. End of story.

Man of Steel: (2013) $670,145,518
Superman Returns: (2006) $404,231,192
Superman: (1978) $300,478,449
Superman II: (1981) $216,385,706
Superman III: (1983) $80,250,623

This is the top grossing Superman movies, excluding BvS or Justice League (because they are crossover movies, not movies where Superman is the sole attraction). Based on this, Superman making a billion would be all time historic and an absolute game changer (because even BvS and Justice League didn't hit that threshold). Which is why having that as an expectation is crazy, because no Superman movie has ever hit above $670 mill.

If Superman gets to $700 mill or in that range, that is still the highest grossing Superman movie of all time.

Eh, I don’t think so. Supergirl will be too far along imo. It’s more likely they’d push Gunn to add Batman or fast track TBATB movie.
That's what reshoots are for, lol.

If superman is a bust they are not going to allow him to fast track the DCU batman.

Truthfully, the only way I see wb allowing two batman iterations is if superman is a massive hit over a billion and reasonates with people.

But if Superman does well, will they force Matt's Batman to be the DCU one. :o

I agree with your take. Like I said though, I am confident it will do very well. Superman should be the best performer of the Summer movies. It is set up to do so. I will say this in America we don’t know what is going to happen with the political landscape but I just don’t ever remember a Superman movie since Reeves in ‘78 that has heavily went after all 4 types of movie goers. I want to see the ratings for the puppy bowl but my guess is the presence of Krypto helped it out.

Box office wise, STM was overshadowed by Star Wars (released a year earlier). So it’s sorta natural to ignore/misremember how huge STM actually was. Adjusted for inflation, methinks it’s calculated at over $1 billion in 2025.

I don't have much to add to this particular discussion, but purely from the standpoint of the studio and investors, I feel that if you want your movie to do as well as it possibly can at the box office, then rescheduling the release date is a no-brainer.

Even if Superman performs moderately well, its potential profits will be adversely impacted to some extent by the combined threat of F4 and Jurassic World. Of that there can be no doubt.

I mean, it couldn't have been that hard to change the release date. But if the top brass at WBD doesn't see it as an issue, they can't be too concerned about maximizing their earnings. I realize that's a peculiar thought. But since we aren't privy to these kinds of conversations, it's difficult to know for sure what they would consider a win at this point.

I started getting into collecting into my early 30's. SR merchandise is one I've continued to add to my collection over the years. I have almost all of the SR figures. That Mongul figure still eludes me.

I wish I had purchased more when the movie came out. I definitely wish I kept the more novelty items like the cereal and soft drinks. Unfortunately being a broke college kid at the time, I definitely never expected to be paying so much on eBay years later collecting this stuff.
If I had all the stuff I had as a kid, I could probably retire.
I had most of the action figures and vehicles from the original star wars film.
All the evel knievel stuff.
All the he-man figures, castle and vehicles.
Six million dollar man figures.
Tons of hot wheels, etc.

I have none of it now. Who knew.
