My thing with Cavill is that he's fine. He looks the part, does a decent job and with better directors has a ton of old school matinee idol charisma but he's a little... On the nose? I want to see Clark played by a bold, interesting choice.

I just don't want to see the Superman mythos Snyder built continue. I don't even particularly dislike it necessarily, I just want to see a great filmmaker come on board and make it their own.

Most importantly I just want a Lex Luthor that isn't terrible. Somehow he's been in almost every Superman movie yet it feels like he's also never been in one. Don't get me wrong, I love the Hackman/Spacey Lex but the closest we've come to a post-Crisis Luthor in live action has been in Smallville of all the damn things.
I second your opinion. I don’t particularly dislike Cavil but I want a fresh new interpretation much like what Reeves is doing with Batman.

Cavill to me is adequate. He looks the part and does what's required, nothing more. So I won't be mad if he gets another movie because I do believe he can work just fine in the role if the script and directing are of higher quality than we've gotten so far. But I will still be disappointed, just because I now know there's such a better option out there, and however good Cavill's movie turns out to be, I'll know it could be even better with a different lead.

Someone new would be exciting, for sure.

But with all the drama, Cavill returning is exciting as well imo, while also potentially garnering support for the actor getting justification, ala Reynolds in Deadpool, or Snyder and his JL. His established face in the role is also more exciting for appearing in Shazam 2, Black Adam, Supergirl, etc.

What I'm really bored by is just Amy Adams' Lois. I hope they keep her role to a minimum should they make another film. Or at least throw a wrench in their boring relationship with a Cat Grant or Lana Lang having the hots for Clark.

I really don't see Cavill coming back. He just carries too much baggage from the previous franchise. And let's be honest, he was fine in the role but was bland. He looks good but he lacks the charisma of so many other leading men in their respective Superhero roles.

I cannot imagine Snyder's JL having much of an effect particularly when we have no clue how it will be received. Rumor was it was already more of the same dark material so many did not like about the franchise to begin with. This may appeal to a loud and devoted subset of the audience, but the general public has spoken. Too often people confuse Twitter reactions with the larger public. They do not really care about Cavill, which is a why he is not a bigger star, ala Gal Gadot and Jason Mamoa.

I want to see a fresh take on the character. Give me a new actor with a fresh and hopeful take on the character.

At least some of his unrealized potential has to be put on Cavill himself. For whatever reason his offscreen charm hasn't completely translated to onscreen. Part of it is the material. I assume part of it is him as he hasn't really wowed in his other films. I figure THE MAN FROM UNCLE is the closest thing where his performance was liked.

The biggest defense I have for Cavill is that nobody has really come off loved in the recent films. You have actors far more acclaimed then him, such as Amy Adams, Costner, Crowe, Shannon, and Lane. None of them have been universally well-received. That leads me to believe that the material is the biggest culprit. Even if you have charm, warmth and charisma, you really don't have many opportunities to display it.

I was thinking perhaps Witcher might have given him the chance to shine, but once again he comes across as serviceable in the role but not overly magnetic. Sorry to say but he seems to be someone getting by more on his good looks and physique more than charisma.

Correct that none of the other cast wowed. IMO, key roles were miscast or extremely poorly written. Pa and Ma Kent were wonderfully cast, but gutted of their core characters. Adams and Fishburne were poor casting choices. I'd argue Shannon was the only character that shined but we've seen Zod before so he felt old hat.

Combine this with a fairly generic actor in Cavill, and inevitably you're going get a "meh" reaction.

Enough years have gone by that DCEU will have a chance to start anew. Other big name movie directors have shown an interest and love for the character in interviews. It's just a matter of time before someone comes along with a pitch and does their own thing.

I can move on from Cavill. It's all the starts and stops over the years that feels tiresome.

Feels very much like pre-SR and the 2008-2009 period when we knew nothing. Depressing times.

Even seeing Routh briefly return on TV made me sad after it was all said and done because it was just a reminder of what could have been if WB had their act together and could put the right people in charge.

I kind of feel Cavill would be the default position, as if we can't get anyone else, he is always there waiting to be picked up. The biggest "what if' really is a director, I wouldn't want to have him forced on me if I were a big name director, I could see others thinking the same. Also there is still the problem of Cavill wanting far more money than WB is supposedly willing to pay.

If they make another Superman movie, Brainiac has to be the villain. There’s no one else I’d rather see. I did some art inspired by Frank Miller’s Brainiac, and I think the general concept could be a cool look for Brainiac’s eventual appearance.

Analog. I’ve tried digital collages, but it just doesn’t feel the same. It’s hard to find inspiration when you have unlimited images to choose from. Being limited to physical images forces me to be more creative.

I want Brainiac but hell no to taking any inspiration from that piece of garbage book. The art is as atrocious as the Story.

I certainly changed my opininon on Routh over time. He has enough talent to do the role justice it's just Singer's take that ruins it for me. Cavill is in the same boat more or less, mostly due to BvS, but the problems are there in MOS too. For the most part filmakers never seem to know what they're doing with Superman .I even side eye Donner to a lesser extent. I just feel like I've never really seen a movie that l love as much as the Nolan Batman films or Batman '89. I'd rather watch The Adventures of Superman, Superman: The Animated Series, and Lois and Clark. Sick of the Jesus allegory being beaten to death in particular. That's the worst thing Donner ever did. Turn Jor-El into God and make Superman about destiny instead of choice. Yet, I do love the Donner Cut and think MOS is pretty great as much as I have problems with it. I still haven't seen a Superman film that I feel is really mine though if that makes any sense. It's like yeah love The Donner Cut but it's still not the best Superman media. TV's better. At least they dont make everything about Jesus besides Smallville and the supporting characters are always better .

I love the Jesus allegories. Wish they would’ve played that up in Justice League. Superman/Jesus vs Darkseid/Satan.

Everyone does it in the films as if it became law in 1978 and now modern interpretations use Jor-El's plan for Kal-El to make him a martyr, who has to be Superman because it's "deep" and "complex". I prefer the versions that aren't aware of Krypton until after he becomes Superman. Making that choice because you want to is a lot more powerful to me and better showcases Clark's idealism.

What do you guys think about Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor if they go younger with the character again? He’s killing it on The Great and he was set to play the villain in the next M:I until COVID messed everything up. He also looks pretty good bald (Fury Road) and was the runner-up for Batman. I know he’s been talked about for Superman (an idea I could also get on board with) but he’s good at darker characters.

I’d still probably prefer an older Luthor but if Corenswet were to be cast as Supes then having a younger Luthor could work if they take some influence from Birthright (and don’t **** it up like they did with Eisenlex).

I think I am about as annoyed with seeing Nicholas Hoult fancasted into every role in every movie as I was with Ryan Gosling and Eva Green. ;)

Nothing about the guy makes me think of Lex Luther.

If they do Brainiac I think Johnny Lee Miller would be a great choice. He could also be Perry White or even a brilliant Lex.

Love your artwork, man. But did you have to make me remember The Dark Knight Strikes Again exists? That’s just mean. :cwink:

NO HOULT FOR ANYTHING!!!

Or... Hoult for everything. Superman AND Lex Luthor. Long lost brothers from Krypton. If they retool the FlyBy script a bit, it would work.

It sure would be different.

Hoult as Gosling playing Eva Green playing Armie Hammer!
