The Daily Planet - Superman News and Speculation Thread (🚨TAG SPOILERS🚨)

Maybe 40 years ago, but I sincerely don't think it would work with audiences today.

I really don't believe that MAWS being the most sucessful Superman adaptation since Smallville and the show considerably downplaying the clumsy Clark Kent act is a coincidence.
IMO what MAWS did was they made Superman a bit clumsier and Clark Kent a bit more confident, if that makes any sense. This isn't a jab at MAWS btw, I love the show.

I'm sorry you feel this way, 'cause I *love* "Donner Clark".

Clark Kent being the disguise is perfect in my opinion.

Yeah, I very much prefer Clark being a disguise, particularly at the Daily Planet. I don't think we've had that take in 18 years.

I'm very much hoping that's the route Gunn takes.

Things like hairstyles may seem like trivial details but I actually think they tell you a lot about the characters. You can't forget there's an entire department completely dedicated to figuring out this stuff and they probably went through dozens if not hundreds of concepts during the course of production. Like any other part of the film, costuming and hairstyling exist to tell a story. Just from looking at Bruce Wayne's hairstyle and wardrobe in The Batman you could figure out he was supposed to be more reclusive and "emo", for example, so I do think it's fair to assume that such an over the top design for Clark's hair tells you a lot about how this Clark Kent take is gonna be.
Yep. Obviously we’re all extrapolating because it’s fun and could be very wrong but little things like this are all absolutely vital parts of characterization.

I mean, Snyder also didn't take that approach, and it's not as if it made his Superman more popular.

Thanks for all the responses! I am de-escalating 😂

I think there's a middle ground which is probably ideal. I don't dislike the iteration of Clark where he's just a buttoned up, serious, regular guy but as a personal taste thing I find watching Superman craft a performance in a very funny, knowing manner is a lot more interesting.

I don't like 'buttoned up' either. I like him as just a dorky but otherwise fairly regular guy. Even though I know its less of a disguise. I don't care cause I love it when Lois falls for Clark at least partially, and an over the top disguise gets in the way of that.

Yeah I can see where you concern is coming from, but I think it's too soon to say.

And for what it's worth, I think Clark "trying to be something he's not" will be very much be his his character arc on the movie.
Yeah it could be interesting!

Is it a wig or his actual hair?

It looks a little wiggy

😂 literally just said that to a friend.

TBH it's fair. There's a few things that will get a 50/50 split opinion with Supes fans, and Clark as the disguise is one of them.

We all the love the character. I can graciously accept this one has gone to the 'other side' 😅

Also if I had to guess what the story between Clark and Lois in this film is: Clark has been working at the Planet for years having a crush on Lois and maybe having interactions with her as Superman but never approached her and never put his foot forward because he feels uncomfortable lying to her. Then whatever the events of the movie are they cause Lois to find out he's Superman which allows their relationship to properly develop over the course of the film.

My nightmare...

Funny. I immediately assumed the opposite! And it's James Gunn. I expect a **** ton of Clark/Lois banter.

But yeah, too soon to tell. But I personally love the look.

I hope so! Ill be so happy to see even a hint of banter now!

I share your concern. Though, I’m not sure if the hairstyle really tells us how “dorky” Clark will be. OTOH… as someone who nitpicks the plausibility of the disguise, I approve. The look is wonderfully effective. :toth

Yeah maybe he'll surprise me and it wont be as bad as im imagining.

It all depends on the depiction of Lois. Is she so shallow and superficial as to dismiss Clark based on his looks? Or is she attracted to the kindest and most genuine man whom she has ever met?
When Clark is a dork and Lois sees beyond that and falls for him anyway…that’s the best of both the characters. Where it goes wrong is when she has a schoolgirl crush on Superman and treats Clark as lesser, despite his inherent goodness

100% this. It will definitely depend on how Lois treats him.

Ugh im spiralling.

It's just fear I guess. I look at that image and im scared it means a 100% Donner Clark. That it means he's the kinda guy you feel sorry for but never feel is on your level. Lois and Clark wont have banter. He'll be bumbling and apologetic fool who is actively trying to be something he's not at all times.

Tell me im wrong?
In addition to @Babillygunn's sage comments about the best Lois being one who sees past appearances and likes nerdy Clark for being just a great, kind, nice guy...

Honestly, I get the feeling based on this look that we are getting a Clark similar to the MAWS version. Naturally a geeky and clumsy, but in a way that doesn't undermine his competence or attractiveness to Lois.

If its naturally dorky that Lois loves, as opposed to faked dorky that puts Lois off, I'm happy with it. In fact I love that dynamic.

I'm just scared that's not it.

Wait, I saw a notification that Breogan responded to one of my posts in this thread, but now the notification is gone. Did their post get deleted or something?

Given how Gunn has talked about how important both the Planet and his hero life as Superman is to Clark and how clearly prominent the Daily Planet staff is on set, the Clark persona can't just be a disguise. Placing that sort of importance on the human side of Clark's life means it needs to have a lot of genuine human connection and truth to it. Which also means that Daily Planet Clark needs to be a real part of who Clark actually is.
