DC Films The DC Studios News and Discussion Thread

Black Widow will be huge. People have been asking for it for years and I think the response to the trailers has been very positive. And even the whole elephant in the room with Widow being dead in the MCU might actually turn out to be the X-factor; I think some people will go see it because they wonder if there’s a chance that she’s NOT actually dead (and given the manner of her demise and what followed it, it’s quite possible). Plus Florence Pugh, David Harbour and Rachel Weisz are all pretty popular right now.

Eternals might have a bit more of a hill to climb because the characters aren’t well known, but this is Marvel. Few people knew the Guardians before those movies, and now they are beloved by casual moviegoers. And I’m 100% sure the visuals alone will be enough to ensnare people, and the cast is stacked with recognizable talent, even if Jolie is the only “big” name there. Plus, it features one of Marvel’s most diverse casts to date, which is awesome.

Very sad. Horrible marketing. Great movie. Someone needs to get FIRED over this. That marketing campaign was despicable considering how good the movie was.

Truthfully, the film looked cheaply made and awful from the ads. While the reviews have been pretty good, it didn't seem like an event film ala Aquaman, Wonder Woman , and Joker.

It didn't have that, "let's rush to the theater to see it!" quality. I'm in no rush to see it in theaters ,though I'll eventually get around to seeing it one way or another.

I wouldn't be surprised if it gets a second life on blu ray and streaming where people discover it and like it .

had the same marketing problems of shazam which also performed poorly

I'm going to see it at 2 today. Robbie was all the marketing I needed. LOL.

I think Sunday could turn out really bad with the Oscars on TV. My wife won't go because of that and she actually liked SS. What do people who like movies do when the Academy Awards are on TV?

I doubt the crossover between superhero movie goers and diehard oscar fans is really that big. And if any of the diehard oscar fans were really interested they'd've already gone yesterday or this morning/afternoon.

The trailer really didn’t do justice to the film at all.

That's because it was a low budget movie and the production team were fine with that "look".

After big budget MCU movies(Justice League. Infinity War, Captain Marvel, Endgame), aren't people tired of "Event movies" and "must see movies", was Captain Marvel really a must see movie ?

That's fine if you want to miss out Margot's great performance in it.

I hope so.

In retrospect, no. But Disney sold it as such, with Carol being the first female lead of an MCU flick who was teased as our last hope in the Infinity War post credit scene

The event films are what drives the genre at the moment. On the other hand audiences are starting to get a stronger taste for the smaller scale, more intimate portraits of these characters. Birds of Prey would have worked much better as Harley striking out on her own. As a film and from a marketing perspective. Still, even with it missing the mark at the box office, it's still a great strategy Warner has for using these films to serve a segment of the fandom (and GA) that feels disconnected from the event films, or misses those story beats they get from the comics. As long as they keep the budgets controlled DC will be more then OK. Not every comic property needs to set the world on fire and be mega hits (Nor should they I'd argue.)

And with WW and Batman on the horizon, they've still got plenty of event films in the mix.

Captain Marvel wasn't a big budget movie. It cost $150M. $1M more than WW. CM was also released in March. Hardly, a must see month but yeah it gets a pick up from being a MCU movie.

Are we talking about just Joker or are we including movies like Logan and Deadpool?

WB is really moving forward with 'The Suicide Squad' title lol

I can already hear the "I already saw that movie" from my co-workers when I ask them about this movie

How can people with marketing degrees be this bad at their job?

I'm including Logan and Deadpool, two of my favorites.

I will be very curious how they decide to market this movie. BOP has to have them rethinking things...

There has to be a balance. Yes intimate movies should be made, but people do want a spectacle. But I don't think WB's plan is to do these low risk, high reward movies is because they want to reach a certain part of the fandom. It's more they've been burned by their highest costing movies in the past.

Certainly, but I'd like to see Marvel Studios in particular do some themselves. I don't think they've made a film for less then 150 million, or at least 125.

There is truth to DC being burned, but they've found an audience they can serve and who was hungry for more of these type films. It would be smart strategy to continue to fill that void, because MS doesn't seem interested at the moment in doing so. DC creating an image of making films that MS won't is an image worth cultivating.

But it's not necessarily the truth. The next 6 movies, WW84, The Batman, TSS. They aren't going to be low scale movies. Then there's Black Adam, Shazam 2 and then the Flash. Shazam had a low budget origin story, but I doubt a Shazam vs. Black Adam movie, if that's the sequel is going to be it is going to be like that. And with someone like the power of the Flash, I don't foresee that being a low budget movie either.

DC has as many naturally large scale characters as Marvel. Films like The Joker are filling a gap in the market, and that’s great. But that doesn’t need to be all that DC does. Aquaman did massive numbers too, and a JL done right in future would still break the bank.

There are some DC / Vertigo movie projects that are not connected to DCEU. For example

It's not really up to them.
