DC Films The DC Studios News and Discussion Thread

Well it looks like crap is hitting the fan under the new regime and it's definitely not what fans wanted. Honestly I hope to God Gunn isn't using Matt Reeve reboot Batman as a template for how to reformed the DC film version because. While I liked some elements of the film, it's devoid of the fantastical nature of Batman's world and the larger DC Comics universe. It's too grounded and realistic to imagine Superman, wonder woman, Flash, Aquaman etc existing..

I disagree. While the movie is realistic, it clearly doesn't take place in the "real world" and Gotham City itself is a very heightened place.

I actually don't have that much difficulty imagining people with superpowers existing in the Reevesverse.

Burn it all to the ground. Batman will survive, but I'm not crazy about Reeves' take and am honestly burnt out on Batman, and he's may favorite damn hero. WB has missed the ball massively and it is amazing to see how clueless they are.

Tbh I'm surprised that people like The Batman as much as they do. It's hella derivative and kinda boring, with mediocre fight scenes. The only thing I liked was the tone and the look of Gotham. And I'm still not sold on Battinson lol.

So, Gunn and company are removing a lot of the major players from production while focusing on lesser-known characters that most people could give a rat's ass about?

I guesse we can expect to see the likes of Peacemaker, Harley Quinn, and Lobo take over the DCU franchise moving forward.

I'm surprised people liked TSS, to me it was just a longer R rated version of the first film with trashy humor (fwiw i did love the characters and cast of both films tho). To this day the best SS adaptation still remains the animated films for me.

On another note, it looks like we found one Hollywood executive that isn't afraid to reject the Rock.

It's amazing how we went from "Welcome back Henry" to full on reboot. So much for Warner Bros wanting to put Superman back into the spotlight.

I'm curious to see how Gunn is going to present a DCU universe that's mostly rated R and has no Justice League or any other major characters.

Where did any of this come from?

All that is known is that Jenkins and Johns are out. No confirmation that WW is out, and Gunn and Saffrann are planning on including the major DC characters. We just aren't sure if it will be a soft reboot with the same cast or if they're starting fromscratch.

I don't see them putting Superman and Wonder Woman on the shelf. More likely they want younger, newer (and less expensive) actors to play them, alongside the younger Robert Pattinson Batman.

Assault on Arkham and Hell to Pay are indeed both great fun.

Scrapping the solo films for your major characters seems like a clear indication to me. Plus, Gunn has always given me the impression that he prefers using morally flexible characters and without any constraints of how they're used.

Not to mention, Gunn pretty much made the JL look like jokes in "Peacemaker" and confirmed that he doesn't like using Superman.

So , I don't know what to make of this news .

I'm numb , given that WB is full of non stop drama , regardless of the leadership , so this news is sort of par for the course as far as I'm concerned, though obviously, its a big deal.

I've basically been focusing more on the development of Marvel stuff coming down the pike in the next few years, since , like it or not, their projects in terms of coming to fruition , are more of a certainty than WB/ DC, constant ,influx plans.

I think thats a very long bow to draw, and it is completely at odds with the public comments of both Gunn and Zaslav.

“We’re honored to be the stewards of these DC characters we’ve loved since we were children,” Gunn and Safran said in a statement. “We look forward to collaborating with the most talented writers, directors, and actors in the world to create an integrated, multilayered universe that still allows for the individual expression of the artists involved. Our commitment to Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Harley Quinn, and the rest of the DC stable of characters is only equaled by our commitment to the wonder of human possibility these characters represent. We’re excited to invigorate the theatrical experience around the world as we tell some of the biggest, most beautiful, and grandest stories ever told.”

I'm kinda in the middle, like you i loved the cast and characters of both movies, but I also didn't hate either movie. I also definitely didn't love them either lol. They were both just AIGHT at best. The second one just had cringe juvenile humor and a R-rating. But for people to act like it blew the first SS Film out of the water is frankly bizarre. It's better but not by a huge margin.

Again, canceling any solo films for most of your major characters seems like a pretty clear indication for me. Plus, Gunn isn't exactly known for using characters that are morally wholesome and a lot of his jokes are just poor taste. Not to mention, he's also good friends with Joss Whedon.

I can't believe that we're still getting a Flash film that's really in name only. I'm guessing they'll move forward with their original plans of
having Superman erased and replaced by Supergirl.

Didnt gunn just last week humble some scoopers by telling them and the Fans to not Listen to anybody but him and Safran because Nobody except them knows the plan? So why are people Losing their **** again over stuff?
I dont care if its THR or so who "reports" it, i wait till gunn and Safran reveal their plan.
After that, there is still time to freak out.

He said that a month ago. Enough time has passed for them to start making moves.

That’s not what happened. They scrapped Jenkins WW3. If they didn’t use the main heroes Zaslav would sack them. That was very clearly the sim of WBD when they were hired.

This is all pointing to a hard reboot of everything but The Batman. Cavill and Batcleck’s cameos being removed are likely an attempt to stop a backlash about teasing something that’s going nowhere.

This also seems to be what Jeff Schneider is hinting at and he’s dropping a scoop tomorrow.

Less expensive, maybe. But Cavill and Gadot didn't START expensive. That comes with success. Gadot was payed, what, $200K for BvS? And her next paycheck is/was $20M.

As for age to match Pattinson... he's 36. Gadot's 37. Cavill's 39. They're all close in age and all look phenomenal.

If they are planning on rebooting the DC universe, why wouldn't they cancel everything that isn't currently in post-production or filming? They aren't going to waste money on a third Gal Gadot Wonder Woman film if they are planning on rebooting everything.

Gunn liked it that one Gal tweet just before all these news. What else do you need to assume that she is continuing? it's not a simple coincidence imo.
Gal is a terrible actress that people always make fun of, I would recast WW for sure bc I don't care about her enough, but that's only me having wishing thoughts, I know she is safe.

Gal is still in.
Henry will be back unfortunately, (ughh)
And I bet Momoa is the one who is pushing hard for Lobo. Fanboys suddenly forgot that the producer of the Aquaman movies is precisely the new big boss now too:funny:. Perhaps you haven't thought that Momoa might be the one who doesn't want to continue with a third Aquaman movie and would rather make something like Lobo... you know, maybe maybe.

Those are my guesses at the moment.

You're the one making sense here. That user is literally making things up. lol

I don’t know, Gunn had a proven critical & fan track record with Marvel and is now running the division.

And Reeves has Batman? And he’s Batman?

Patty went from directing the Wonder Woman franchise and a Star Wars movie to nothing.

WW84 was such a misfire. I’m glad to see a new direction

I think its highly likely - based off of WW1984 - that Jenkins' and Johns' scriptment was not good. Why should Gunn and Safran pay to make it if that's the case? Jenkins doesn't own the character.

Yep yep x100000000
Common sense.

I think it's highly likely that the scriptment wasn't that good. Jenkins was given the keys to the kingdom at one point - she was getting the Amazon series spinoff which she never got off the ground.

I think it's highly likely the scriptment wasn't very good. If the movie got cancelled for quality I'm glad. Someone should have stepped in on WW1984 but didn't. Jenkins would be in a much better place career wise if they had.

Exactly. You have to be too stupid to let this happen again, it still seems crazy to me that they didn't get involved and say nothing when they received WW84 script and later with the test screenings.
And they shouldn't be in charge of a huge film studio if they listen to the rock again.

Sounds like a full-on reboot is coming and I am 100% here for it. Would also make a lot sense with Gunn and Momoa teasing Lobo. He hangs it up as Aquaman and moves into a completely different character.

It's risky, but it's simply the cleanest solution.

I agree and disagree.

While this is what I wanted, the DCEU/Snyderverse has time and time again proven to be full of diminishing returns. The Batman was such a breath of fresh air for DC. If that can be replicated successfully for other heroes, I think it will be better for the DC brand overall.
May the gods listen to you guys and this miracle can happen.

After they pulled off the hardest thing with Batman, I don't understand how they couldn't think of repeating the same feat with the other movies especially Superman who desperately needs a complete reboot.:(

Just do it,
and ignore annoying fanboys and cultists. Blockbusters are made for the general public.

Look at that tweet again as though she’s been told her time as the character is done. It could easily be a gracious thank you to the fans, and an indication she won’t be salty about “the next chapter” and will be watching what Gunn and Safran do with the character as well…

And if Henry is back, why no contract?

The Superman meetings could easily be because Gunn wants a reboot in 2024. Sony did the same thing when they rebooted Spider-man. Told everyone they were planning Spider-man 4 until they announced the reboot. Muscietti may be directing a Superman reboot…

In the end, im all for a reboot dont get me wrong.
But not when it means we dont get the Aquaman Trilogy, the WW trilogy and Cavill once more back as Superman.

Like yeah reboot the whole ****, without any baggage...but you can still do these movies as some black label thing or so.

The brand has been stuck in limbo for ten years with a fractured audience. This would just extend that.

They need to choose one course and stick to it - soft reboot or hard reboot.
