The Defenders The Defenders Discussion Thread (NO SPOILER TAGS NECESSARY!)

s1 of DD all over again?
lol he finally got a track suit, but for w/e reason has random horizontal stripes.

Honestly, as long as he gets the mask, I'll take a track suit. I kinda like that more down to Earth look anyway.

I mean, I'm just having a hard time reconciling some of you guys nitpicking.

Underwhelmed by the Hand's "grand plan"? Why? There were trying to extend their lives. 5 EXTREMELY evil individuals who had their hands in so much of the worlds evil wanted to live forever. Sounds bad enough to me. Oh yeah, and mining the bones would literally cave in NY. Sounds even more horrible. Works for me.

Iron Fist with no mask a problem for you? Shouldn't be. Don't know why you would think they'd introduce it now and not in his already announced second season.

Frankly, I thought it was awesome. A+. Even redeemed Danny's character to a degree (and provided a nice roadmap to who he SHOULD be for IF s2).

I really don't have anything to complain about. Now I hope they leave the Hand buried and move on. IF season 2 should be based of the tournament of the 7 heavenly cities.

Oh yeah, and I love Claire, I really do, but I really would rather Luke and Jess be together.

PS, my jaw literally hit the floor when Misty's arm got cut off. SHE BETTER GET A BIONIC ARM, DAMMIT!!!

I'm surprised no one made a joke about calling in the Avengers. I definitely feel Iron Man or even Cap could have taken on the Hand all by himself.

So can Thor and the Hulk or for that matter most of the characters seen in the Movie MCU. Of course, most of the movie MCU characters have the added advantage of projectiles shooting out of their arms and/or flight.

Just finished.

It was pretty good

Pros

-I thought Danny and Luke were WAY better here than in their own shows. Especially Luke. Danny I feel like he was a lot better when they gave him personality. Like with him and Luke in the Chinese restaurants. Give him something like that. Build on his kid like nature. Please. I know they're not but they really should do Heroes for Hire instead of LC2 or IF2
-Performances overall were solid
-Most of the action scenes were good

Cons

-I thought Sigourney Weaver was wasted
-For it being shorter, those first episodes dragged on. It took them way too long to come together
-Too much stuff with the side characters. I don't dislike the characters, but it's The Defenders show. I don't care about them when Im trying to see Cage, Iron Fist, Daredevil, and Jessica Jones interact
-I disagree with a point made last page about this feeling like DD3, LC2, etc. I think it was a bit much and I think Avengers (sorry that comparison is just gonna come) did a good job forwarding the story of most of it's characters without taking that full step
-I don't like the Hand. I'm done with them. I don't wanna see them again
-At 2 points the soundtrack choices bothered me. The first when they played Run the Jewels, the second when they played Protect Ya Neck in the last episode. Now I love Run the Jewels (actually saw them in concert last weekend) I own all their albums and some of their solos. And I love Wu Tang Clan, 36 Chambers is one of my favorites. But the placement of the songs were so weird. The scenes where they were featured, used the songs in the most pointless ways. The moments would've been better by using a score
-Danny spent way too much time away from the rest of the group near the end

Fanboy Complaints/Nitpicks That Didn't Affect My Enjoyment But
-Wish Iron Fist got a costume. There was a chance of a cool moment of Danny geeking out over the costume or at least some kinda scene where Matt tells him how he got it
-Now this is a bulls*** nitpick...but everyone was too layered up. In some of the fight scenes I just sat back and thought: "Why is Iron Fist wearing like 3 coats." "Why is Jessica still wearing her scarf" "Couldn't Luke just be wearing his yellow shirt instead of that hoodie they keep pushing?" Idk...I'm weird

Overall this was good. Nothing crazy. Next time they just need to tighten things up in terms of characters and pacing and also get better villains

Well that was because they shot it during fall/winter.

Also, the setting of show is probably early 2016, which causes a bit of a problem for the future.

I think both us fanboys and creators need to stop trying to keep timelines in check by mentioning specific years and time periods

the hand plot.. why did them wanting dragon bones to live longer mean that new york would be destroyed??

also funny how jessica lets go of the elevator and then cuts back to daredevil n electra and it never hits the ground.

Gao said that removing the fossils from underneath the city in Midland Circle would disturb the bedrock and cause the city to collapse. Go figure.

Oh Gao totally lived. She disappeared into the shadows, as I recall. That's code for "She's Escaping."

Actually that wasn't the very last time we saw her. We saw her looking over the injured Murakami and saying that it's the end right before the explosion and the building collapsed. However, Matt managed to survive the building getting dropped on him. So...there's a good chance Murakami, Gao, Daredevil, and Elektra all survived.

A lot of people think it's a better idea though if the Netflix shows were like the DC Shows on the CW, a totally different universe from the DCEU, with no bearing on the TV shows whatsoever. I like Agents of SHIELD, but AoS caused a problem with Marvel trying to go the CW route with their TV Shows due to SHIELD's connections to the movies.

During this last season of SHIELD, the whole "Darkhold" storyline was likely to be related somehow to Kamar-Taj, which was seen in Dr. Strange. Marvel also had a series on Peggy Carter running for two seasons and she was most recently seen in Ant Man. Next year's season five finale of AoS will likely reference the aftermath of the wrath of Thanos in Infinity War.

Move over Captain America and Peggy Carter, I think Daredevil and Elektra are going to take the top spot of being the MCU's most tragic and well layered couple.

I haven't finished yet but will say the major flaw in the story is we don't care about Kun'Lun cause we never saw it. We experienced Elektra and DD. All this mystery around the monks and what they did or didn't know or say struck a hollow chord.

I mean i dont know about all that.

I more meant that stuff with people saying "Wait how does Homecoming take place in 2018 when CW takes place..." stuff like that.
The AoS thing is a whole separate issue

I was actually thinking about that (I'm currently on episode 4 at the moment).

I mean it's pretty much like Agents of SHIELD, where the so called villainous organization don't even bother to think of the Avengers as a potential threat to their grand design.

However, in this case, I think some exceptions can be made. Depending on when the events of this show takes place, it's most likely that the Avengers no longer operate in New York City anymore. Plus, the last time that we checked...the only active members on the Avengers were Iron Man, War Machine, and Vision.

anyone else feel like they needed a bigger budget? meant to be a culmination of four shows but the action and scale wasn't any bigger than we've seen before. heck, i reckon daredevil s1 and s2 felt 'bigger'.

Well that and I heard that one of their main goals was to go back to Kun Lun but if that was the case, then why didn't they just do so when the portal was opened in the events of Iron Fist? Why bother sending Elektra there to wipe them all out when they could have just gone with her?

idk maybe. Wouldn't have hurt. I didn't really notice it being low budget other than the green screen scenes

If Davos was somehow involved, we'd probably care to some degree like how Bakuto was mainly there for Colleen.

Well it's definitely a trade-off from being on a network like Netflix. On one hand, they aren't as restricted as to what they can show in their content. But as a result, they aren't able to secure the millions of dollars that shows like Agents of SHIELD and even Inhumans are able to get. Though for what it's worth, I think the series has done a good job (thus far) with their production value but I can't help but wonder on what the show would have looked like if they did have a budget like what Agents of SHIELD or even Gotham has.

Yes, Elektra even references this during Defenders. So what the heck happened there?

I think budget limitations were a huge problem. Big reveal was just a skeleton for Shao Lao. I can't believe this is what the Hand had been searching for centuries and risked their entire operation for. What was the point of Black Sky? What is Black Sky about? So the whole war with the Chaste was about digging a big hole to get to Shao Lao's remains?

To be fair I dont think AoS, Gotham, or what I've seen of Inhumans look that good for the budget they have either

It was an interesting miniseries. It had some good thing and some bad things. I do feel like Alexandra was wasted, though I did love the moment with Elektra. I do wish it was more her destroying The Hand from the inside out. That's not what happened though.

Anybody think Elektra made it out alive?
