The Defenders The Defenders Discussion Thread (NO SPOILER TAGS NECESSARY!)

i liked how you could more clearly see daredevil's mask/helmet. season 2 the lighting made it quite hard to appreciate it.

definitely keen for s3.

After Marco Polo I doubt Netflix is trying to break the bank anymore.

Of course she did

I don't want to assume there is no sarcasm here. I'm not sure. I think she could have, as her "Black Sky" powers kind of gave her at least some speed but I'm not sure if it was enough.

I will also add, the new Daredevil mask from season 2 looked so much better in this. They actually showed it off without some weird lighting.

i thought they did a really good job with the show. alot of great character interactions.

Yes, I agree as well. I think the character interplay was just fine, definitely the highlight of the writing. The plot and story could have used a brush up though

It was an interesting miniseries. It had some good thing and some bad things. I do feel like Alexandra was wasted, though I did love the moment with Elektra. I do wish it was more her destroying The Hand from the inside out. That's not what happened though.

Anybody think Elektra made it out alive?
How did Daredevil manage to get out if Elektra didn't save him?

I mean, that's what I was thinking/hoping but who knows. I just need her to show up again and without The Hand.

That's what I'm thinking as well, although it begs the question...Where exactly is Matt? Appears to be a church or a convent.

Yes, Elektra even references this during Defenders. So what the heck happened there?

I think budget limitations were a huge problem. Big reveal was just a skeleton for Shao Lao. I can't believe this is what the Hand had been searching for centuries and risked their entire operation for. What was the point of Black Sky? What is Black Sky about? So the whole war with the Chaste was about digging a big hole to get to Shao Lao's remains?

To be honest, I had originally thought (prior to the spoilers that were revealed for this show) that the Hand was working towards unleashing some kind of demonic like entity that was perhaps sealed away in that hole that was introduced in Season 2 of Daredevil, with the Black Sky being more of a vessel for that entity to use (either to inhabit or perhaps to receive energy from as a sacrificial offering).

So yeah, hearing that it was just about bones for them to use to further prolong their lives was a bit of a letdown.

And we still don't know why the Hand required so much blood from those kidnapped/missing teens from Season 2 of Daredevil.

It was good. I thought Danny was better here than in Iron Fist, but still don't buy Finn Jones in this part once he has to actually do anything serious. The characters ribbing him were some of the funniest parts. The Hand still kinda bored me. But the character interactions were great, and I enjoyed it. The colour coding early on was definitely on the nose, but I liked it.

Two things I did miss though:
-Supporting cast interactions. I think it would have been nice if they had gotten more to do and bounced off each other more often instead of sitting in a police station for a lot of it.
-A talking episode. My favourite episode in Daredevil season 2 is New York's Finest, my two favourites for Jessica Jones were Sin Bin and WWJD. I missed having an episode where they just sat down and talked for it, as well as while being part of the arc, feeling like it's own episode rather than just part whatever of the season.

Even with the flaws of needing a bigger budget for a story like this or the confusion over the Hand's actual goals, I feel like this show would have still been nearly perfect if they had given Danny a costume. And really, it's not that hard to figure out a way of naturally inserting that into this show.

With everyone at Kun Lun seemingly dead, Danny could have simply decided to wear their robes as a means of paying his respects to them and continuing on their legacy.

Or like others have stated, he could have started wearing one after being inspired by how Matt handled his activities.

I mean the Hand are given ninja costumes to wear, with Nobu having worn the more prominent outfit in his fight against Daredevil in Season 1. So it wouldn't be a stretch to say that the iron fist would have had some kind of ceremonial outfit to wear as well.

Heck, it could have been something like what the League of Assassins wore in Batman Begins. Just replace the black clothes with Green ones and insert a yellow insignia onto the chest armor.

And we still don't know why the Hand required so much blood from those kidnapped/missing teens from Season 2 of Daredevil.

That was what they used to resurrect Elektra. The resurrection tomb was almost filled to the brim with blood, which we could assume was the special kind that was being mixed/made in the teens bloodstream.

Just finished. It was a fun ride, but I feel like overall, it left me a little empty. There were a lot of things set up across the previous shows that just fell flat when we finally got to them. The sum was not greater than the individual parts--it was less.

The good:
- The character interactions were great. And it made the weaker characters, like Danny, much more enjoyable.

- The standard hallway fight was pretty great. Overall, all the fights were good.

- The scene were Foggy gives Matt the costume. Probably one of my favorite scenes between the two. It was only slightly ruined by Foggy later saying that he hopes they get Matt back after this one more adventure.

- The set up for the future of the Netflix corner of the MCU. Where DD ended up excites me, Danny looks like he's at least getting closer to where he should be (but not there yet), and it looks like the Daughters of the Dragon will be a thing.

The bad:
- Danny largely still clunked along. I thought Finn's performance in his show was because of bad scripts and bad directing...nope. It's him. Weakest actor of the bunch by far.

- The Hand's plot was so dumb. They wanted some dragon bones to keep doing what they were already doing? If "the substance" that brought them back to life is so valuable, why did they waste it on so many nameless ninjas? We know they did, because the ninjas in DD season 2 didn't have heartbeats.

- How exactly was the Hand's plan meant to destroy New York? Cities rise and fall, according to Gao. But all she wanted was some dragon juice to keep herself alive. Nothing to do with NY at all.

- The writers had no idea what to do with the Hand/K'un L'un relationship.
The Hand kept saying they wanted to get back to K'un L'un...but then implied that they were the reason it was missing in the first place. Then they say they were banished...but from Bakuto's (or was it Murakami's?) conversation with Alexandra, he says he went with her willingly. Contradictions abound.

- For all the talk of the Black Sky being so important...she really wasn't. Elektra added nothing to the Hand's plan. She was just another enforcer for them. Why did they need the Black Sky so badly?

- What, is Danny wearing a ****ing track suit now? They had a perfect chance at the end to give him his ****ing costume. They're just being stubborn about it at this point.

I mean, that's what I was thinking/hoping but who knows. I just need her to show up again and without The Hand.

We know that we're finally getting some new villains.

Punisher - Jigsaw and Rawlins

Jessica Jones - Nuke returns and Karl Malus (plus Purple Man hallucinations)

Luke Cage - Power Master and Nightshade

That's three seasons of Marvel Netflix series without The Hand.

My hope is that Daredevil Season 3 still has Elektra involved but returns to Kingpin as the big bad and introduces Bullseye, Typhoid and Bullet and then brings Nuke in for the last few episodes. Do a cross between Born Again and Touch of Typhoid with Bullseye killing Karen in the same way he did in Guardian Devil and you'll have a perfect Daredevil season. No Hand stuff other than Elektra.

Iron Fist Season 2 is where we see The Hand again because we'll need Gao and Steel Serpent after the tease in the last scene of Season 1. (Plus Zhou Cheng needs to come back.)

-At 2 points the soundtrack choices bothered me. The first when they played Run the Jewels, the second when they played Protect Ya Neck in the last episode. Now I love Run the Jewels (actually saw them in concert last weekend) I own all their albums and some of their solos. And I love Wu Tang Clan, 36 Chambers is one of my favorites. But the placement of the songs were so weird. The scenes where they were featured, used the songs in the most pointless ways. The moments would've been better by using a score

so much this.
it was so out of place, felt really amateurish.

Only on episode 5 but I really just don't care for Elektra. I have never been a fan of the character. Aside from her I enjoy the show and the team up stuff. If she was ever to get a show though I would likely skip.

For someone as strong as Jessica and Luke, you would think that they would send more people flying like several feet in the air by throwing or punching them. Also, how is it that anyone from the Hand was able to hurt or challenge Luke when he has both super strength and bulletproof skin?

Also, did anyone else feel like Madam Gao came off more powerful here than she has in her previous appearances? I mean her so called "force palm" came off so strong here that it's kind of a mystery on how she was even captured in "Iron Fist" by Danny alone.

i was really dissapointed in Murakami.
Nobu was way more threatening.

It's too bad that they couldn't bring in something from the films like Crossbones's gauntlets to use against Luke Cage.

I was desperately hoping for some Bud Spencer moments. With a bunch of thugs constantly hitting him in the back, only for him to turn around with an annoying look on his face, slapping the daylights out of them. It was definitely annoying to see him struggle at certain points, when he only needs a fraction of his strength to deal with normal humans.

The Hand desperately needed some muscle, other than Elektra.

That's an actual plot point though. Madame Gao and Alexandra have a big talk about how the Black Sky really isn't much, and how the rest of the Fingers want to get rid of her.

It's not like they didn't tackle this.

It's true that Daredevil outfit looked much better here than it did in DD s2.

I know!
I'm confused why they put all of them in the same room but they didn't make interact with each other?
I understand that they want to save Luke/Danny/Colleen/Misty for the LC and If shows but, what about all the other pairings ? I would have loved to see Misty and Foggy investing together, Karen/Malcolm/Trish too etc. So many possibilites and we got almost nothing. I thought one of the purpose of that show what to finally mix all the characters together.

oh, one thing i really liked was that they used Japanese actor for Murakami.
his Japanese was perfect unlike Nobu and other so called Japanese characters in previous DD.
