Wait...really? I think S1 was miles ahead of this season writing wise. And this season still isn't bad, but they found a way to keep a sense of mystery with Wells even once we knew he was reverse Flash. He was a layered character that kept us guessing right up to the end. Zoom is very simple in comparison. He's cool looking and freaky, but as of now, his motivation is pretty simple and there's absolutely no personal connection to Barry thus far. That doesn't mean he's bad, but he's definitely been less engaging than Wells was last season.
S1 has something that S2 doesn't; emotional resonance. Zoom's motivations aren't ambiguous. He is literally telling us his objective. There is hardly any uncertainty with his actions, it's boring as a main big bad. Yes his introduction was all kinds of cool but he's not scary anymore, we know exactly what his purpose is (which is kinda lame, stealing speed, eh k). Plus I've met Tony Todd and he's one of the nicest guys out there, amazing voice actor though.
With S1 you felt there was so much going on with RF and Barry that you could almost build the entire show spanning a few seasons on it. RF did keep us guessing until the end which was the main reason I kept watching because the character was a swirl of contradictions. What the writers are doing this season is such a step backward in terms of story development and characters that I almost lose interest in the show as a whole. Zoom isn't RF and never will be. They need to find that emotional trigger again for the stories to make a resounding impact on their audience. Personal attachment is everything to the main lead, you've hit on the point instantly when you pit RF against Zoom where villains are concerned.
