there was no unified infrastructure on the PS2. Any game that utilized online play had its own registration and sign on
So I'm guessing that it varied from some games being good with what they had to work with and others being frustrating to use?
That's not the case with the current gen and that won't be the case next gen either. Maybe it doesn't take off as fast and the ps3/360 did, but the attach rate will be similar to this gen. There's no evidence to support otherwise and preorders for the consoles and games for the new consoles have been really good.
The issue I see is that a lot of games that are coming out to the XBone and PS4 are also coming out for the 360 and PS3 and that will probably still be the case for the next 2 years.
Preorders always sell out. Each store is limited to how many they can take and it's done deliberate to help create hype. If you missed a preorder, you'll be frantically looking for one. I think that you'll be able to walk into a store 2-3 weeks later and find plenty on shelves. It will be a combination of MS and Sony being better prepared with a supply and less demand than previous consoles.
