there was no unified infrastructure on the PS2. Any game that utilized online play had its own registration and sign on

So I'm guessing that it varied from some games being good with what they had to work with and others being frustrating to use?

That's not the case with the current gen and that won't be the case next gen either. Maybe it doesn't take off as fast and the ps3/360 did, but the attach rate will be similar to this gen. There's no evidence to support otherwise and preorders for the consoles and games for the new consoles have been really good.

The issue I see is that a lot of games that are coming out to the XBone and PS4 are also coming out for the 360 and PS3 and that will probably still be the case for the next 2 years.

Preorders always sell out. Each store is limited to how many they can take and it's done deliberate to help create hype. If you missed a preorder, you'll be frantically looking for one. I think that you'll be able to walk into a store 2-3 weeks later and find plenty on shelves. It will be a combination of MS and Sony being better prepared with a supply and less demand than previous consoles.

Yeah it'll be about a year I'd say. Definitely not less, they keep on supporting it a bit if there is games that keep coming out. This generation isn't like the last ones. Usually when the new gen comes out you can see that the current is starting to.run out of life but that hasn't happened yet with the 360 or ps3. So they'll both be supported much longer than normal

Yea very true, however some games releasing on both platforms are seeing higher preorders on the next gen unit than on the current gen. Assassins Creed IV for example is seeing bigger numbers on the PS4/XB1 in comparison. I think the attach rate will be really similar to last gen.

I give the 360 a year, if that, before MS stops supporting it.

You can't compare the 360 to the Xbox in terms of how ms supported it. There are a LOT more 360s in the wild(like 70 million?) than there were OG Xboxs. That was one of the reasons MS was so quick to pull the plug on the Xbox.

True, MS and Sony deliberately undercut their production to give off the perception of high demand.
I never really get this type of tactic. I'd find it more impressive if they say they've sold only 80% of units but have sold 8m altogether than having totally sold out of 5m units (I know that's not a likely scenario). And that kind of ultra-high demand Vs supply where it's very difficult to get something usually turns me off the product until the silliness has died down. :woot: Sure most see it differently.

Just finished Space Marine for the first time. What a great (and tremendously underrated) game. It's definitely in the running for my favorite third-person shooter ever. The last third to last half of it is just incredible. It's really sad there most likely won't be a sequel.
Oh. I'm not far into the campaign at all and was a bit disappointed with the look of the game but the multiplayer was really good. Hope it improves a lot over the 2nd half like you say. Must do if it's a potential favourite TPS.

No sequel because of low sales?

The graphics? I think the game looks pretty good. Especially when you're doing a lot of melee and there are lighting and particle effects flying everywhere.

It does. The battles get bigger and crazier, and new enemies come into the fray later in the game.

I don't know. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it sold 1.5 - 2 million copies. Which is pretty good for what is essentially a new IP on consoles.

Regardless of the sales though, the reason given was that the CEO or president or whatever of THQ said he, "wasn't sure there is room" for a Space Marine 2 because at the time the first 40K MMO (Dark Millennium, which was cancelled) was in development at Vigil and he thought one would cannibalize the other's sales.

Of course the situation has changed dramatically since then. Vigil and THQ are no longer around, Relic is now owned by Sega, and there is a second MMO in development. So who knows? Maybe has a different outlook than THQ did.

Oh I guess you're playing on pc so it might be a lot better.

Good.

Yeah, not too bad if true.

In that case I'd say there's a fair chance we get one one day although it could be a very long wait. I bookmarked that earlier post you made about the new game they're working on to read when I'm on a proper computer & I guess as long as some top games are released in the Warhammer universe every couple of years I can't complain.

What do you mean by supporting? Making/publishing new games or maintaining essential services like XBox Live & game servers on 360? I can see them stopping game publishing on this gen in about a year but I think they will maintain 360 services for at least 3 years, and more if activity is still strong. Of the people I know who are getting XB1 early hardly any are completely transitioning to a new console as most have done in previous generational moves. They'll still be on 360/PS3 a fair amount.

For anyone interested here is a brand new Monster Hunter video taken with my Dazzle Video Capture Device. It's just a High Rank Brachydios.

Microsoft: Xbox 360 will last three more years

Called at least 3 years of support for 360. Does this mean they just stop making new content or pull everything including servers for all multiplayer games? IN that case I need to finish a HELL of a lot of stuff.

Servers will last much longer, look at the first Xbox. I don't suspect MS will do very much 1st party support for the platform from here on out, but there will be plenty of 3rd party support until it dies.

I never had the 1st XBox & don't really know how the services were cut off. So are you saying you think servers will last much longer than 3 years from now? All I care about is being able to complete the few hundred old games I own so I hope it works out like that. Also hope single player games can be synced for achievements with XBox Live long term. No idea how many years it would take to clear my backlog if I just focused on that. (already have to completely finish all linked pc games by next July)

Well it all depends on the game. EA games have slowly had their servers shut down over the course of this generation.

Xbox Live was shut down for the original Xbox just under 5 years after the 360 came out. Unlike the 360, Microsoft basically abandoned the Xbox once the 360 came out, so I suspect they won't shut it down for quite some time.

Oh companies who (forcibly) use their own servers I'm sure will shut down by then. Sorry to be a pain but it's quite important for me to find out...so to clarify you think Microsoft will keep their own game servers open after the 3 years mentioned and are talking more about not releasing new material when they're saying support will be pulled after 3 years?

Again it's really all on a game by game basis. If you have "hundreds" of games to get through, your bound to run into a few whose online servers have been shut off.

Xbox Live will be available on the 360 for the foreseeable future. If Live on the original Xbox lasted 5 years after the next gen, this will last just as long if not longer.

As far as new software, I think MS will move all their 1st party devs onto the X1 sooner rather than later.

The "three years" thing most likely refers to manufacturing and marketing. They will start to phase out the system after 3 years, but it will still exist, and be playable.

Right, thanks for your opinion on that.

I better get cracking. Will have to inform my boss that I'll be working on this backlog for the next 3-7 years in case I don't turn up on any given day. :woot:

Lots of talk about the Mighty No. 9 KS currently going, but another platformer franchise is getting a Kickstarter worth notice: Shantae.

Apparently, the game is already approved for the PS3/PS4/360/One/Wii U and PC via steam, they've just looking for funding. This isn't the third game, though, that is still scheduled to come out as a 3DS title. I think this is meant to be more of a side console title for the franchise.

I've not played the sequel, but I downloaded the original GBC on the 3DS recently, and it is a blast to play. So, I'll probably back this. If you have a 3DS, the original is worth the $5. Not sure on the second game, though.

Man I just had the weirdest experience in Gamestop. It seemed like I was being rung up by Patrick Batemen.I got the hell out of there.

Hmm... might be cool. Not sure how I feel about them Kickstarting a Shantae game when they still have one in the chamber they're working on and haven't released yet though.

Looks like MS has their date set. November 22, one week after the PS4.
