The Good Citizens of Metropolis: The Casting Thread

Steve Carell - Lex Luthor

There are so many Latino actors (mostly Brazilian) who look the part it's crazy. With more interesting variations on the look than what I see in the American or British talent pools. If not for the accent, which would be an issue no matter how much coaching they went through, I'd recommend dudes like Lucas Malvacini, Gonzalo García Vivanco or Rafael Cardoso. Now there's an interesting Superman face.

Paul Gross as Jor-El. He is such an underrated actor and was a favorite of mine to play Superman back in the 90s.

Jane Seymour as Martha

That’s all I got for now

I have no idea if this actor has been suggested before for Clark/Superman (didn't search the thread), but anyone familiar with Ryan Paevey? I just saw a made-for-TV movie that he was in and couldn't help but think he could be a solid Superman.

My cast, ideally I'd like a 1938 set superman movie, so my casting choices are:

Superman/Clark Kent - JON HAMM
Lois Lane - NATALIE PORTMAN
Jimmy Olsen - CHRIS COLFER (1938 set movie) / BRANDON MYCHAEL SMITH (modern day set movie)
Perry White - HUGH LAURIE
Brainiac - JASON ISAACS
Jor-El - CLIVE OWEN
Lara - JENNA COLEMAN
Jonathan Kent - JOHN GOODMAN
Martha Kent - SALLY FIELD
Lex Luthor - BILLY ZANE

Good choice!

If Michael B Jordan were to be cast as Superman, an idea I very much like, would you want him as Clark Kent, Val-Zod or Calvin Ellis? Would he wear the red-blue-yellow or another suit?

If done right it could be an amazing reinvention for a new generation.

I would love him as Kon El, i had this idea, which isn't too far off the original, in that he is a clone of both superman and luthor, and he never really be called superboy, except by say luthor, in a condescending way, which he then uses to spite luthor as he goes against luthor's wishes and joins superman.

Also - he could do a lot for John Henry Irons. His suit would be similar to say superman, in that it looked like chain mail with steel plates for protection - no way as bulky as Batman's in BvS.

I can't help but feel DC are so far behind, and also messed up an oppertunity to do reign of the supermen, even else worlds and multivese, Spiderman looks to have totally nailed it, the introduction other worlds and opened the door to it.

I love the notion that the idea of superman transcends universes - that the S symbol rears itself one way or another, either by a kryptonian bearing it, a president or else.

I was actually thinking he would be a great Perry White - could really channel the Lane Smith vibe.

I thought about this too but have no real knowledge of any actors - a huge talent pool

would have been better for MOS and probably would have stuck around.

My ideal casting choice

Clark Kent/Superman - Nicholas Hoult. He can nail the clark persona's to a T and with a good gym program could look great in the suit. His blue eyes really pierce you.

Lana Lang - Constance Wu, great actress that can act as the juxtapositon of not leaving smallville, but instead staying behind at, ironically too, her fathers wish - a long time friend from Smallville that knows Clark better than she knows herself.

Lois Lane - Emmy Rossum. She can play serious, gritty and has a look of wisdom in her eyes.

Perry White - Steve Carrell. He can bring warmth with a touch of humour to the office.

Jimmy Olsen - David Kross. Looks the typical scandinavian lad that packed his bags and lens and travelled to the states and ended up as a free lance photographer and has so much in common with Clark Kent.

Lex Luthor - John Travolta. The dude has experienced so much, yet is so talented, if he honed it in, channelling that frustration, could be an epic performance.

John Henry - John Boyega. John is Clark's neighbour and someone superman saved, inspiring him to later down the line become 'Steel'.

For a more detailed synopsis, i can divulge but i want to follow the lois and clark route, where Clark is this geeky, smart, amazingly good athlete, yet humble guy from smallville, that just so happens to have powers that can change the world - it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

His best friend, Lana who he shares such a bond with watches his journey as he starts life in metropolis, yet, can turn up on her door step in minutes to catch up and walk the corn field. Clark gets the Planet gig, but has already met lois as 'Superman' what does he do? well, create a subtle disguise, non prescription glasses, lay low and stick to his day job and make superman this larger than life, colourful character. But as Perry pairs them together and Superman makes his mark in the city, it gets harder for clark. Luckily, his new pal Jimmy Olsen helps with the office tension.

Brant Daugherty
Another guy I would test. He's done small tv stuff, nothing to rave about, but couldn't hurt to test.

So i checked him out, personally and how he presented himself in 'mingle all the way' - very affeminate. However, his co star in that Jen Lilley would make a great lois.

Yeah, I considered Daugherty a while back just based on his look, but when I decided to look into him, it was a big NOPE as soon as he opened his mouth. He just doesn't give off a Superman vibe at all, imo. Same thing happened to me with Derek Theler. I thought, "huh, he's got a nice look," then I watched one clip of him and when he spoke he sounded like the most dudebro-sounding guy ever, and I was like, "oh well," lol.

I think Liam Hemsworth has a shot.. I really do... seems like an easy option.. but not the most inspired. I have kinda given up looking to be honest

I would rather be be kidnapped and forced to watch nothing but Kardashian-related reality shows for an entire year than see Liam Hemsworth anywhere near the role of Superman.

Just go with an unknown like usual, I say.

cuz' you too found 10 sure-fired picks?

I can just see him being someone they would pick... they tried hard to make him a star... not my choice, for what it’s worth...

I could get behind Hault as Superman, probably my number 2 choice after Wolk right now.

Dude Hoult could actually pull it off though. He has the chops. This time I really want them to cast for acting ability over looks. They made the mistake of prioritizing the latter over the former when casting Cavill...

You see, i'm on the fence, to a degree - not that i disagree - here is my logic - Clark, relaxed, on the farm is the real person - that is what the actor needs to nail, those moments when clark is truly himself, as Clark in the office, to an extent is an act, either bumbling or a low key, holding it in, not being 'overly exposed' type and superman should be this.. perfect, larger than life iconic figure of a man. So that's how i could forgive Routh, Cavill etc as Superman himself isn't an actor, so if him in the office looks awkward or his superman wooden, then for me, that's part of the act, however, Reeve made it look seemless so there is something to be said. I guess we never really got enough 'relaxed clark' moments from DCUE or Returns for my liking. I blame Snyder for not showing us lighter moments.

But, i do want to see someone who can act, give it a go. I just feel with Hoult, as Clark could easily pull off the shyer, introvert type, then when actually down to business investigation, play the more serious, confident clark, which then is itself an extension for Superman.

Clark Kent/Kal El/Superman- Aaron Taylor Johnson

Lois Lane- Emma Stone
Jor-El- Sean Bean
Perry White- Alec Baldwin
Jimmy Olsen- Asa Butterfield
General Zod- Gerard Butler
Lana Lang- Naomi Scott
General Lane- Bruce Willis

Not sure if that casting was ironic or not... it feels very.... aware. Like if there was a general movie and in that movie they were watching a superman movie, that's who they would have.

Jor El - Brando, Russel... Bean
Zod - Stamp, Shannon.... Butler

Had Stone not been in spiderman, i wouldbe all over it and i thought about Taylor, but he just doesn't have the charm for me - Jimmy, however.
