I'm of two minds of this project. On the one hand, I applaud DC for doing it. The genre needs diversity in order to survive long term and we should be able to have CBM movies like this: low budget, indie like prestige films with top talent attached to it, telling an intimate story that doesn't revolve around capes. A gritty Goodfellas ish take on the Joker sounds fresh.
And yet, there's that other side of me, the comic book fan side of me...the side of me that knows that this is going to be one of those movies where the title character doesn't really become the title character until the very last frame of the film. Because, trust me, we're not getting any clown Joker in this movie. This is very much going to be a full on grounded origin story for the whole movie, I don't think Phoenix is putting on any clown makeup until the last shot and that kind of makes me roll my eyes because it'll feel like a tease.
But I'm leaning towards positive. If its a good movie that's well directed, acted and engaging and makes me forget about the fact that there's no JOKER in this Joker movie then I can overlook it.
