Justice League The Joss Whedon Thread

I enjoyed Justice League, but I think Whedon and the studio meddled too much with it.

Ah, the smell of hypocrisy.

Hey, I blame Da Vinci for this mess, he is the creator! I'm just the guy who tried to clean this up! :cwink:

The guy that messed up 2 films so badly that 3 films were extensively meddled with is now being compared to Da Vinci?

It also covers not touching another artist's work for your own benefit.

You do know we are talking about a movie. There has never been a $300 million dollar movie that was made by one single person. Artistic integrity for not touching another artist's work may come into play when talking about a guy painting his visions in his loft, and no one should go into his loft and change part of the painting....but when talking about a major motion picture....everything about it is a collaborative effort.

So far everything points to the opposite of this being a collaborative effort.

It also covers not touching another artist's work for your own benefit. Joss has everything to gain from this including money and making his friends at WB happy so he can keep the Batgirl gig. The last part is my assumption but I'd be surprised if it didn't have a play in this.

How about Richard Lester from Superman 2 in a similar position? Troubled shoot and taking over from Donner.

Maybe I used the wrong word (I see that collabrative is "working together" when I meant "working on").....but the point I was making, and the point I would hope you already understand.....there are always multiple hands working on movies. You read about it all the time, and sometimes the info doesn't come out for decades (Carrie Fisher made a great living as a script doctor working on other people's scripts) but so many scripts have multiple people writing on them. No one screams artistic integrity. It's business as usual.

i'm curious to know how SW fans feel about Hand Solo situation. or Rouge One.

I understand that clearly but that doesn't mean i have to agree with the way WB & Co conducted business on JL. As you said, money talks and as of now, they played it very wrong.

Edit: How am I being a hypocrite? Would love to know your thoughts on the matter if you're going to call me out.
Sure... you're condemning others of this :
Remember a few weeks ago when the word was that this movie was great? I remember people in here whining that "Oh, Joss is probably going to take credit now for Snyder's brilliance." Yet here we are on the other end of the spectrum.
When a few weeks ago you were saying "Oh, Joss has done another miracle! This is his movie now! Can't wait!", but now that the result isn't that good, it's back to being just a Snyder movie and the blame is all on him.

This argument presupposes that the original piece of work is a masterpiece. BvS is a turd. Snyder’s JL would have been a turd too.

No. All I'm saying is dont make presumptions about what it was. It could have been good, it could have been bad, it could have been meh.

I think that's as fair a statement as you can get.

I have to confess to a morbid curiosity in seeing what Snyder would have done had he been left to his own devices. It would have probably been terrible (again) but it wouldn’t have been as bland or corporate, i’ll certainly say that.

Yeah. I think I'm most curious about what Junkie's score would've been like. I have a feeling that at the very least, it would've provided more impact for certain moments and would not have felt like light background music.

Choosing the composer and the direction of the music is one of the biggest creative decisions you can make as a director. More than any reshoots and quippy moments Whedon added, I think that decision may have had the biggest impact on the film. And I suspect it wasn't a good one, as much as I'm a huge fan and admirer of Danny Elfman.

The stuff we say from the trailers was nearly 95% Snyder, and it all looked pretty good and the characters were the same, with a lot of humor and stuff. I dont think it would have been a dark, 3hr deconstruction as some people think.

I guess it would have had balance. Lots of drama, and humor sprinkled throughout, a 2.20-2.30hrs action movie.

I agree that it probably was always going to be Snyder's version of a lighter movie, especially after they had gotten the feedback from BvS and scrapped the 2 film JL arc. People forget that he did make Legends of the Guardians, a kids movie, so it's not like that was something impossible or unheard of.

However, I'm still not sure that I can see where all that extra drama would've come from based on what we know. Steppenwolf's backstory would've perhaps given him a bit more dimension and upgraded him from 1D to 2D. But unless Superman's ressurection originally happened significantly differently, which I'm not convinced of- I still feel that even the movie in its original incarnation absolutely wasted the element with the biggest dramatic potential.
