The "Keep Hope Alive" (that the rights can revert back to Marvel) thread - Part 8

No Doom was more than watered down in those films. He was an embarrassment. Doom, Reed, and Galactus are my biggest complaints about those movies. Now because those films were atrocious, as an FF fan I get to hear - "Well they already tried a faithful rendition of the Fantastic Four and it didn't work - it's time to try something new! They need to be reinvented!"

And now we get Domashev the angry blogger.

Utterly sucks.

I understand what you are saying, however, I did like McMahon as a choice for Doom, the part wasn't written well. I don't blame the actor, I blame the writer/director. I feel the same way with Gruffudd, he's a good actor, but he was given table scraps from the writers.

What happened with Doom is a little more complex as the idea of turning him into a corporate tycoon came directly from Avi Arad, who said having a tyrant dictator wasn't believable.

What a moron. Glad he's left Marvel proper to ruin movies elsewhere.

They basically turned him into Sony's Norman Osborn. The same scene played out with the board given Doom the boot just like Norman.

I always thought the 400 million dollar Spiderman had a bit of influence of what Fox wanted to do.

Mad Max: Fury Road, Tomorrowland (if Disney is worried that they'd still be competing with themselves three weeks after the AoU release), San Andreas, Terminator: Genisys, and WB's Peter Pan film all strike me as films that could be pushed back to early August. Terminator in particular may want the lack of competition this FF film will provide as it's a huge name property but the buzz is pretty bad. August is kind of a haven for those films (though GotG showed amazing films can release in August).

Even if negotiations were open, I don't doubt that Fox executives would price gauge the property to make the best deal for themselves (considering it their job to do so). It's going to be a long time before anything can be done to the property and/or the rights shift back.

Tomorrowland seems a sensible move and a realistic one, and something that Disney can actively do. The others moving really depends on whether they want to move them at all.

But they can't all move to August. Just one of them has to, and the others move to other dates so that it's checkmate for Fox and wherever they move they're doomed. :p

I was just pointing out all of the ones that seemed likely to move. One (maybe two tops) is all that would move to that particular date, other than a smaller film. I didn't even bother listing those. If AoU dominates the box office like the last one did it really would be wise to move Tomorrowland. I still stand by Terminator: Genisys being a good candidate, though. I've not been hearing good things at all, and I think it would benefit from moving to August.

Our goal isn't to put money in Fox's pocket, our goal is a good film, right?

Well, you ARE talking to someone who continues to pay to see the Resident Evil films despite admitting they suck, and compares that to his present support for this film.

Some of the positive people wouldn't care if the FFINO movie completely sucks. They'd still want the film to get a sequel anyway just because.

Really does make sense. It would also be fitting if Brad Bird, who has already made a superior "Fantastic Four" movie, got the better of them once again. Then Disney should hire him to make the real thing.

Brad Bird would definitely be a good choice. I also think Peyton Reed (if Ant-Man works out, and I suspect it will), Joss Whedon, and Jon Favreau could be interesting choices that are already part of the Marvel Studios "family." How great would it be if the Fantastic Four could introduce Phase Four? Imagine a phase kicking off with a Fantastic Four origin story featuring the Skrulls with an end of Phase Kree-Skrull War film, followed by a Phase with a great FF versus Doom film and an end of Phase Coming of Galactus film?

That would be epic! And the marketing for Phase 4 really does write itself.

I really have been confounded on a daily basis for near a year as to why Disney/Marvel don't just pony over whatever astronomical ransom FOX wants. I know they have pride and good horse sense but so what. Just do it already. They are destroying your baby. Stand up for yourself and do something! The only thing that justifies their silence is the possibility of an eleventh hour deal or lawyers claiming they can get the IP back since this movie doesn't resemble it. But it's seeming more and more likely that this FFINO will barely make back its modest budget and we'll all regroup here in seven years. Life's too short! Come on Marvel! We need a Thanksgiving miracle! Just...something.

Phase Four wouldn't just be the 4th Marvel phase. It would be shorthand for Phase Fantastic Four with the real Doom as the villain.

In the meantime, would the fake Doom please stand down.

George Clooney would probably appreciate his movie being moved to a different date where it won't be swamped by the Avengers. He could also be a big enough draw to sway audiences away from FFINO. Disney should move it. It's within their power to make life difficult for Fox.

But could Fox move FFINO anywhere else after that?

I personally favor holding off on Doom for the first FF film. He doesn't really factor into their origin (outside of Ultimate and Fox stuff, and... yeah). I prefer alluding to Reed's former acquaintance, "Victor", news on television in the background discussing the unrest in Latveria, and the epic post-credit reveal of Doom in all his glory taking the throne of Latveria setting up a killer second film. Of course, Marvel could take a page out of their Phase One playbook and give one subfranchise two films in a single Phase. I also think Skrulls could allow them to do a modernized space origin. The space race is out of date, but portals in the desert aren't the answer. What if Reed was investigating a mysterious anomaly in Earth's orbit and was tasked with investigating it in an experimental ship when the project was shut down by the government? That could set up a new take on the whole stealing a rocket with his friends scenario. The twist being that the "anomaly" is a cloaked ship and the project was shut down because key figures have been replaced by shapeshifting aliens. You can still have the blast of cosmic radiation. No need to fix what isn't broken. Superhero origin films love tying the villain into the origin and you may as well use the classic FF space villains. Plus they actually predate Doom.

It's hard to say. We don't know what the theatrical release language is in the contract. The movie seems to have been filmed right on the edge of the deadline. If they can postpone it, September and October are no good. The current date is more of a prime date than anything in those months. November has some huge name releases (including Peanuts, a film Fox clearly cares way more about than FF), and December has Star Wars, so it may not make sense to release anywhere near that (UNDERSTATEMENT).

Postponing the film into 2016, if that's even possible, would be incredibly telling that the film sucks. Great films rarely move from August into the next calendar year. That's what Dragonball Evolution did after all, and...

(remembers the multitude of parallels between the new FF and DBE)... well then. You heard it here first, folks, Fantastic Four is moving to Spring of 2016! Look for it to open against a Miley Cyrus film and advertise like twice on Cartoon Network. :o

Well Reed could even be investigating in the aftermath of Thanos and any remnant aliens out there. He could even be investigating the Kree.

And I don't necessarily see Doom as the villain of the first MCU FF but he could be the big bad of the entire phase, with appearances in all the various movies.

This is making me sad thinking again about all these great possibilities. Depressing.

Dr. Strange and Doom going to Mephisto's realm in Dr. Strange 2. That is a thing that could have happened. It's straight out of the source material, it sets up so many things for the darker side of the Marvel Universe (introducing Mephisto could even help bring Ghost Rider back), and we'd see a side of Doom Fox is never going to touch on.

But I hear blogging's all the rage with the cool kids, so Domashev it is. :whatever:

The only sorcery Domashev will be touching on is commenting on the Harry Potter films on his blog. That's probably the extent of his knowledge of magic.

If that happens, wouldnt Marvel have a leg to stand on?

Phase "4" is going to be a real thing.
