The Official Choose A Director Thread

It's funny..I just had a thought of the Wachowskis and McTeigue kinda made me excited. Maybe just for the reasons that another Superman is in the works..

i picked johns and morrison because recently they've had a better grasp on the character than any of the other writers in the industry. the sheer fact that film writers have been trying, and failing, to get a good superman story on screen since superman II calls for a different approach. jj abrams is a really good writer, and could do it justice if he didn't try to reimagine too much. sadly since his first attempt reimagined everything i doubt he'll get another crack at it.

I think that Johns and Morrison have both succeeded in telling great Superman stories. While I don't think they should write the scripts themselves, their involvement with DC movies does give me warm fuzzing feelings inside.

I'd be interested in seeing how the Wachowskis tackle Krypton. My hope is that it would be a drastic departure from the Donner films, with nary a crystal in sight. We've seen two rather interesting, totally different visions of a future city from them in the machine city from The Matrix (dark), and the city from Speed Racer (colorful). I know Kyrpton shouldn't be the focus of the movie, but it'd still be exciting to have something other than Donner's crystal ball to think of when we think about a live-action Krypton!

Isn't the latest rumor that they'd simply produce? I know James and them are really close collaborators, but the brothers would very well just handle script duties and little else, ala V for Vendetta.

I would love to see what they could do with Metropolis.

whoa haven't posted in a while...

Lets not forget that Morrison HATES the Wachowskis with the passion is 1000 krypton sons..

He maintains to this day that the bros. stole/lifted The Matrix idea from him (most Grant's THE INVISIBLES)

I guess if Mcteague is directing that would be better for morrison, but if they are hands on producers, i don't see him writing for them...

just thought I'd throw that out there....

oh and YAY for superman reboot!

^From what I gather, whichever comic book writer is hired for this project, I'm guessing in this case Morrison, he would just be writing a story/outline for the film. Then it is getting passed on to a screenwriter. That's my understanding of the situation. So I'm not even sure how close Morrison would get to the director who then gets hired to film the script. I'm sure he will still be used as a consultant but again I'm not sure he would be THAT involved with the day to day operations of the film once the story/outline leaves his hands.

Plus, no matter how much Morrison may hate the Wachowskis, he is doing this first and foremost for WB. And this is an opportunity of a lifetime, to have a hand in writing a Superman film. I'm sure he would love the chance to see his name appear in the credits on the big screen as long as his story is kept intact and not butchered by the time it gets to filming, which I doubt since WB seems to be really conscious of syching up with DC now.

Johns also worked in the film industry for many years.

The Hollywood Reporter story made the process sound more collaborative than that:
Some agents and scribes grumbled about being forced to work with the consultants, never mind that Johns started his career as a assistant to "Superman" director Richard Donner or that Wolfman has worked in animation since the 1980s.
But it is certainly possible that there is a scenario where Morrison works up a storyline and the writer/writers take it from there.

So are they actually going to reboot the franchise, no more Donner/singer-verse ?

We dont know yet. Its looking good tho.

Man I hope so. And I don't want anymore Brandon routh, I got nothing against the guy, but you don't have reboots with the same actors from the previous film.

WB may or may not see it that way.

It doesn't make sense a reboot with the same leading actor, people will be confused.

I had nothing against Routh either, he did a fine job actually, but in a reboot the best to do is recast everyone, so I support Henry Cavill, this is his time.

Brandon gonna come back im saying it right now.

If he does come back, its gonna be a semi sequel to SR like Batman forever was to Batman returns...saying it right now :oldrazz:

Cant keep him and do a reboot, it just doesnt make sense. Its silly.

They have a PROVEN, PROVEN formula in BB and TDK. Reboots from the groud up work if done correctly with a talented director

(ie. dont do what marvel did with the Incredible hulk which in the end, i like both part ang lees and french dude's equally)

Its true people really think viewers are morons. Every average joe in america has a computer and all their going to do is look it up.

ya but alot dont do the reseach, and like others have said folks at first thought bb was prequel to b89, or tih is a sequel to ang lee's 2003 hulk. I said it many times if the plan is full reboot its best for everything to be all new and all different so they have that clean slate, and dont have to be stuck with the same past incarnation take of the character, actors, look, story, etc...... I would love to see more of the newer mythos from 80s-present that hasnt made it onto the big screen finally. And not have the entire supes film series set in old mythos.

I doubt most people will care enough to look anything up. They'll just think the trailers are cool, or not, and then watch the movie, or not.

Ya thats how most people are. Heck i am like that too for some films, like ones i dont know about filming, and if i see a trailer/teaser/promo that looks interesting and peaks my interest i will see said film.

true, and he was richard donner's assistant for many years, which is probably why he writes superman in homage to the donnerverse. i'm sure if given some direction about what kind of script he needs to produce he can come up with something different and exciting.

I heard Morrison's name in terms of new DC collaborators, and though I know he did ALL STAR SUPERMAN, I immediately thought he had been brought on for the troubled JLA project. Just because Johns, Wolfman, and Morrison came onboard doesn't mean they came onboard for immediate films. Johns is involved in THE FLASH, and worked on GREEN LANTERN some. I'm guessing Wolfman is working on their TEEN TITANS project, and Morrison on JLA, though I could almost see Wolfman consulting on Superman and JLA as well. I'll bet WB still wants some major writer/director team to tackle Superman. Wouldn't hate being wrong, but I just don't see Grant Morrison being WB's go to guy for Superman.

^The script was never the problem with the "troubled" JLA project though. In fact, WB had a script they loved. It was Miller and his difficulties getting the tax break that was the big problem. I think the script was still in the process of being touched up by Miller himself but for all intents and purposes, WB was very much content with it. Why would they hire a comic book writer to work on a script they already like and were ready to shoot with?

Besides, Horn himself said a Justice League project is a ways off now, that their priority now is to establish these solo franchises first.

Ya i doubt we would see a jla film any time soon after the fisaco that happened with jl:m now if gl does well, and flash can happen real soon, maybe we could have one around 2014-2016 range. But i wont hold my breath their. As for johns, wolfman, morrison ya it will be great if one or all are apart of any new attempt with superman but ya they could just as easily be up for other projects, like teen titans(though i dont think that will happen any time soon) or other projects i dont know names of off the top of my head. I dont know all the stuff they are known for.

I don't know about the script either but the rumours (probably untrue) didn't sound great. That said they could of got a tax break in Australia. Because even overseas films get them. But they wanted the ludicrous tax break by wanting it classified as an "Australian film". Which it wasn't. I'm not sure of the percentages but one was a ~10-15% break (it might be more as it was awhile ago and I didn't memorise it). They wanted the 40% tax break.
