The Official Dominic Monaghan/Bolt Discussion Thread

I'm curious as to why the Variety article says:

Monaghan will play Barnell, a mysterious character from Wolverine's past who has the ability to manipulate energy and electricity.

That sounds nothing like Barnell aka Beak. Mistake? Or complete bastardization of a character?

Intersting casting addition. Monaghan actually looks a little like Beak.:p

We'll see how the character pans out in the final film. Hopefully he's given something special to do

I'm guessing the latter. :o

It's an original character then, not a bastardization. Still, why that name I wonder...

Yeah.. just read that... WTF? I mean, I don't really care anyway as the character means nothing to me.. but.. huh???

I'd prefer a bastardization of the character to getting Beak from the comics - a lame ass looking character who can't fly!

Hopefully the Variety article is right about Monaghan's character.

Remember how many characters they screwed up in X3? It'll probably be like that. I mean Pyslocke who was nothing more than a chameleon who blended in with walls? She is so much more than that.....

Not all mutants should be ultra-cool supermodels you know.

the characters like psylocke in x3 didn't work because that movie already had a huge cast. this time around it's just wolverine and these are his supporting characters.

My problem is that there are a bunch of mutants in the comic books who can manipulate and control energy/electricity. I hope they didn't have the nerve to name the character Barnell and have him doing something totally out of character *power-wise*. Maybe it was a mistake on Variety's part? I hope it was...:oldrazz:

I think Variety is wrong. Heres what comingsoon.net had to say about the casting.

Just Jared reports that former "Lost" star Dominic Monaghan will play Barnell Bohusk (AKA Beak) in 20th Century Fox's X-Men: Wolverine. Here's a description of the character:

Beak was a mutant whose bones were light and hollow. His arms had begun to grow feathers, which when fully formed, may have allowed him to fly. He could at the mean time glide and fly for short distances with great effort. Beak also had enhanced eyesight along with talons on his hands and feet. Even though Beak had bird-like qualities, it was extremely difficult for him to fly.

I know but they could be supporting characters. And I REALLY hope they are just cameos. Saving Omega Red for the sequal is too late for me. This movie should close of a part of Wolverine's past not keep it open.
hey it took the comics like 30 yrs to close his past. They can't fit all that in one movie.

I don't recall made-up characters in X3. Anole, Glob Herman, Phat, Spyke, Quill, Arclight. They were all actual comicbook characters. Ash i'm not sure about.

I find it amusing and ironic how you defend multiple cameos in Wolverine but not in X3. :hehe:
As far as I'm concerned those characters are so lame they might as well be made up. I'm not saying that there was too many cameos in X3. I say the more the merrier but Ratner chose to use them simply cuz of their powers rather than having well known characters.

Well, I guess you can either pick a well-known character and alter the story to make their powers/persona have a place. Or you can come up with a story and then find some characters whose powers fit it.

I think the way Angel, Beast and Leech were part of the cure the story worked very well. In the comics, the cure is derived by an alien called Ord from the Legacy virus in a dead Colossus. That wouldn't work.

I think the writers must have believed that choosing minor, lesser-known characters to populate the story would be better than wasting big characters.
Hence Quill, Arclight, Ash and Spyke. Would people rather have had bigger names in the same tiny roles?

Hellz yeah, Dominic Monaghan.

Agreed! Psylocke was the only character who was really wasted in X3 imo. I don't think the same will happen in Wolverine though, I hope not anyway.

I actually didn't mind the brief appearance of Psylocke. The comicbook character has such a complex history involving mind-swaps, body-swaps and coming back from the dead...and a rather bizarre power (purple 'psychic knives') that I was quite happy with a brief movie cameo.

I wanted another scene or two with Angel; a better Colossus scene than him carrying a TV; and a bit more fleshing out of the main characters. I also wasn't fussed about seeing Anole the lizard mutant climbing the church wall or Phat changing mass. Not entirely sure about Quill but he had his place, I guess.

One cameo I did like was Ash, the guy who spewed hot coals. I'd not come across him before in the comicbooks.

Yeah, Ash was my favorite brief cameo. He was unique - would've liked to see more of him.
