'Gotham' Boss Sets New Batman Prequel Series at Epix (Exclusive)

'Pennyworth,' a 10-episode, straight-to-series order, will be an origin story about Batman's best friend and butler, Alfred Pennyworth.

Epix is getting into the DC Comics business.

The MGM-owned premium cable network has handed out a 10-episode, straight-to-series order for Pennyworth, a drama set in the Batman universe from Gotham showrunner Bruno Heller.

The series will revolve around Alfred Pennyworth, the best friend and butler to Bruce Wayne (aka Batman). The series is not a Gotham spinoff but rather an entirely new story exploring Alfred's origins as a former British SAS soldier who forms a secret company and goes to work with Thomas Wayne — Bruce's billionaire father — in 1960s London. Sean Pertwee, who plays Alfred Pennyworth on Fox's recently renewed Gotham, is not involved. Casting has not yet begun and the series is set in a completely different universe despite hailing from Heller and producers Warner Horizon. (Others who have played the Alfred role include Jeremy Irons, Michael Gough, Michael Caine, Alan Napier and William Austin, among others.)

Pennyworth is based on DC characters created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger. Heller will pen the script and executive produce. The drama marks a reunion for Heller with Gotham's Danny Cannon, who will exec produce and direct the pilot as he did with the Fox Batman origin story.

"As genuine fans of these classic DC characters, as well as the incredibly talented Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon, we couldn’t be more excited to make Epix the home of this series," Epix president Michael Wright said. "We can’t wait to work with Bruno and Danny — along with Peter Roth, Susan Rovner, Brett Paul and the team at Warner Horizon — on this fantastic origin story.”

Gotham, while not a ratings breakout, has been a respectable performer for Fox and earned an abbreviated 13-episode renewal for a fifth and final season. The order helps Gotham hit the 100-episode milestone needed to be sold in syndication, which would create a financial windfall for indie studio Warner Bros. TV. (Heller has an overall deal with the studio.)

"Michael and his colleagues have created the perfect venue for original storytelling, and all of us working on Pennyworth are thrilled to be on the Epix slate,” Heller and Cannon said in a joint statement.

The sale marks a key off-network pickup for Warners in an era when broadcast, cable and streamers are increasingly looking to own their pricey scripted originals. The series arrives as Gotham is poised to finally introduce the caped crusader after four seasons of young Bruce's (David Mazouz) journey. The pickup also extends Warners-based DC Entertainment beyond Syfy's Superman prequel Krypton and multiple broadcast series on The CW including Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow and Black Lightning. DC also has a rapidly growing suite of live-action and animated scripted originals on its forthcoming DC Universe subscription platform.

At Epix, meanwhile, Pennyworth brings the premium cabler into the genre space with the series joining recent straight-to-series drama Godfather of Harlem. That series, starring Forest Whitaker, is set in the early 1960s and hails from ABC Signature Studios. Epix's scripted roster also includes drama Berlin Station and comedy Get Shorty. Pennyworth arrives six months after Wright was tapped to take over the cable network. The executive returned to cable ranks following a stint at Amblin. Before his time with the production company, he ran Turner networks TBS and TNT, which, like Warner Horizon, are in the Time Warner family.

The Teen Titans Go movie got it (almost) right!!

Biggest thing to take from this is it's not connected with this show. It's its own thing.

Casting has not yet begun and the series is set in a completely different universe despite hailing from Heller and producers Warner Horizon

Someone give those Teen Titans Go writers a raise. Interesting that this isn't in the Gotham world. Granted, it doesn't need to be and is perfectly capable of standing on its own, but I think it would've been interesting if it was and this was Sean Pertwee's Alfred, given that Gotham has touched upon his military background and first encounter with Thomas Wayne.

Oh so Bruno Heller hasn’t written a Gotham episode in 2 years and disappeared to London to work on this? Makes sense since he doesn’t want to have superheroes on TV.

I’m not surprised because this is the type of thing Heller is interested in, but it’s a surprise that a network greenlit it. But it’s just 10 episodes and on a niche network, so I think there’s no harm in trying.

Immediate thoughts:

- Never heard of EPIX in my life

- Shame they couldn't keep it in the GOTHAM world and retain Sean Pertwee.

- Eh, 10 episodes... let's see what they cook up.

To be honest, no. If it were set in the Gothamverse, maybe, but since it's not I just don't have any interest. :/
I think it’ll be cool.
Alfred’s background is interesting enough and 10 episodes is the perfect amount for it.
I think it being set in the 60’s London eliminates the need for it to be set in the Gothamverse.
He’s not in Gotham and he wouldn’t be bumping into any familiar characters anyway.

Gothamverse as in, Alfred still being played by Sean Pertwee.

I see.
Still, even if it was supposed to be the same Alfred, I think they would get someone younger.

I love Pertwee as Alfred.
Glad we have another season with him to look forward to :D

Cameron posted a lot of BTS pics on that day. Interesting insights.

I think there should be a thread for this new series in Misc. TV series; this is a little bit off-topic,

No joke, I thought this was a very late April's Fools joke. Because it is a joke.

Once I realized it was real, the word "WHY?!" was my response.

I think this is mostly Heller’s idea. Once he pitched it to WB and found a network for it, WB loses nothing by agreeing to this. Alfred isn’t Batman or Joker anyway.

Even if it's bad it's only 10 episodes so won't be long before we get something else.

Originally, I thought it was a prequel to Gotham before I read the report, considering that Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon are involved.

Why do you come to this thread if you don’t like any of this stuff? Why waste your time on something you don’t like?

My Family. This photo was taken at the last table read of Season Four.

This show has been such a blessing to me. A rock in the worst times and a door to so many unbelievable opportunities. I’m thankful for it in all aspects. I’m thankful for our Executive Producers Danny Cannon, John Stevens, Bruno Heller for my inclusion in this show, and the continuous belief in my abilities in playing the GLORIOUS Selina Kyle. Thank you, Danny and Bruno, for believing in that 14 year old girl who jumped off a chair in that fancy theatre on the Warner Brothers lot. I’m thankful for FOX and WarnerBros TV for providing a foundation for a beautiful, unique show like ours. I’m thankful for the amazing group of people that make up our Crew; because, ultimately, we wouldn’t have a show without them. I am thankful for the cast. Over the last 4 years, we have become a Family of Choice. Which, in my opinion, is the best kind of family because like the name states, we’ve chosen each other. Work isn’t work on our set, to me. It’s Family Time. And yes, it can be stressful because our days are typically 14 hours long but—there’s never a dull moment. And I’m so excited Gotham gets another handful of time filled with vivid moments through Season 5.

I might be more interested in Pennyworth, as it hopefully will deal with none of the Batman mythology. My main issue with Gotham is that I've always preferred the interpretation that the freaks don't show up until Batman does. So I never was a fan of the take Gotham had from the start.

We'll see some new characters in S5:

“There are a whole bunch of characters I want to see that I feel the viewers at large aren’t fully aware of, like Scarface or Ventriloquist,” Stephens told CBR. “There’s a great dark version of that character somewhere out there who I would like to see come out. Some characters we know we want to see are Mother and Orphan. We want to see Lady Shiva. We are going to see all those characters in Season 5.”

Can't wait for Shiva, Scarface and Ventriloquist!!! :drl::hmr:

So we are getting a "Pennyworth" show and Batwoman will be appearing on "Arrow". All of these shows set in the Batman world...yet no show or even an appearance by Batman. :(
