The Official Hype Fitness Thread 6.0 - Part 8

So funny story:

Last night I had a dream that I was playing basketball with Russell Westbrook. I tried to drop a Shamgod crossover on him and I felt a huge pop in my abs. I woke up with a shooting pain in my upper ab muscle.
I’m still sore this morning.

You know that you’re getting older when you can’t even dream about exercising without getting injured.

First your knees, now your abs.

I hope things get better for you so you can run again without any problems. :(

Reading sounds more difficult. Maybe TV might be possible, otherwise music/podcasts/audiobooks. Stationary bike is very low risk and can be done for ages every day, definitely a good complementary option.

Great. I expect to get one within about 6 weeks unless my timetable clears up.

For longevity/general health (my main goal), upper body is equally important. I hope you can get into it. I am stuffed for time right now so being forced to run less but expect much more time once a bunch of things are out the way and then I plan to go back to the ultra high mileage, get a bunch of complementary things in like martial arts and elliptical while on leisure stuff (particularly gaming) and regular (but not long) gym sessions.

You’re doing great though and I’m excited to hear that you’re keeping things up over winter and looking like making progress and getting consistent. Big motivator for me when I see others around me making conscious improvements to their health and fitness. Keep going please! :cwink:
I would love to hear how it goes regarding the treadmill, I'm mostly interested in how noisy those small machines are. We had a ton of snow recently but less than a week after the temperature changed and now the roads are all clear again, so no risk of slipping.

Great work @gohei_ and nice to hear the updates @Iceman.

I’m really envious because my recovery still is slow going. But at least there is progress inasmuch as the pain in my knee and the tenderness is drastically reduced. But I am going to wait on running on this until another couple of weeks just to make sure that there are no setbacks. Most of the fluid is down and I actually can kneel a bit without significant pain. Everything is still tender. But I am itching to get back out and run.
At least I have the benefit of there being 10 inches of snow and ice covering our sidewalks, so I couldn’t really run right now even if I wanted to.
I know how you feel. Being sick or injured is the worst when you are in a good groove with the fitness stuff. Hang in there!

I used to love my treadmill that I had at home. But I ran on it till the motor went out.

The last 5 years or so I’ve used the treadmill at my gym. But I miss having the one at home.

Gosh, I will also strive to be more careful in my dreams, or at least thoroughy warm up and get the dynamic stretches in at the beginning of them! In all seriousness, sorry to hear and hope you get better on all fronts asap. I know how much you're missing the running.

Will shout as soon as I pull the trigger.

The running pads I'm talking about are specifically designed to be hidden away when not used and as quiet as possible when used. I believe suitable for night time use for eg without waking others. I found them by searching for those features as a super-noisy one wouldn't work where I am at the moment.

Good to hear on the snow. The weather is hopefully going to improve from here on out, but I'm glad I've got myself geared up and better prepared for future winters. I always had a long lay off of many months during them in the past. I think this year will be very good if I avoid injury having kept up some decent activity (even though still significantly reduced) in Dec and Jan. I'll be way ahead of the game when spring starts and we get further into the year. No starting out the year in May trying to drag myself from the abyss. :hehe:

If you really want to be an "Ass Man", you should switch to the Stepmill.

Tonight is Leg Day for me. I've switched up my workout playlist from Zimmer to Poledouris. The Conan score is the perfect length, I just listen to it from beginning to end:

I used to work out to the Conan soundtrack all the time in high school!
I used to do cooldown stretches to Recovery. (One of my favorite scenes from any movie)

The Riddle of Steel!

Awesome!

By the way, with Milius unable to make his planned King Conan movie with Arnie because of his stroke, I realized the perfect person to make the movie is Robert Eggers. The Northman was Eggers "trying to do Conan the Barbarian by way of Andrei Rublev".

Eggers would be surreal.

But if I’m being honest, as amazing as Conan the Barbarian was, Conan the Destroyer is borderline unwatchable aside from Arnold vs Wilt.

Yeah, Destroyer being such a poor sequel is part of why I would like to see Arnie get to ride off into the sunset with a great final installment for one of his iconic roles. He's too old for it to be done justice with the T-800, which also just needs to be left alone before any more damage is done to the franchise. Whereas it is a perfect fit for Conan since the first movie ends with an image of an old, grey haired Conan sitting upon a throne.

I have rested my knee long enough, but still have a lot of soreness. So I’ve made an appointment with my primary care doc and hopefully will get a referral to get this checked out.

I’m genuinely a little worried. This has been going on for a while and that knee has had a lot of issues over the past few years that I’ve probably downplayed or ignored. To be honest, after the first tear, I haven’t been able to jump off of my left leg at all.

I’m hopeful that this could mean that I get this cleaned up and I’ll be good as new in a couple months, but I also know that I’m breathing down the neck of 50 years old with a lot of wear and tear on my soft tissues.

We shall see what they say.

I saw my primary care doctor yesterday. He had some concerns about my knee just from a quick exam due to its range of motion, swelling and popping. He said that, while he can’t tell anything without an image, he would bet that there is some decent damage probably to the meniscus. So I have an MRI scheduled in three weeks and then follow up with an orthopedist.

At least I will know and be able to start working toward improvement.

Well my running prep got derailed by some big personal issues in Jan. After a hardcore Nov (403 miles / 648.5 km) and an understandably reduced Dec (169.3 miles / 272.4 km) with everything that happens during the holidays, I had to stop in Jan after getting to 119.5 miles / 192.4 km and did nothing for the final 2 weeks before my first ever running event. Still massively looking forward to it (half marathon in Edinburgh) and will just enjoy the experience and try and finish by any method, even if I need to walk some, especially on the hills. I expect to try and return to nomal training after that and make big strides this year if I can avoid injury.

Oh, sorry to hear, but yes that is the best attitude to have with this kind of thing. By having that mindset you are already that much closer to the day this thing will be behind you and you can build up training freely without having to worry about it.

Well, made my running event debut yesterday after having to give up on training for it. 1.59.28 on a beautiful course with absolutely crazy hills (1 mile uphill with steep sections (had to walk parts of it) and then 1 mile downhill steep enough to almost lose control. After the lower training in Dec and the sudden stop in Jan, I was stoked to squeak in below 2 hours on my first event. I look forward to seeing what I can do after months of training under my belt later in the year and on a flatter course.

I am so happy to hear about this. That is a great time and a great accomplishment. Hopefully it was also fun.

Right from the start it was absolutely amazing to be in there with so many people running quietly in such a beautiful unique location. After having to stop my training I wasn’t planning to go for time at all so that was a great surprise. Thanks a lot, very much looking forward to doing further events.

Since the half, I did a 20 mile (Tues) and 13.1 mile (Thurs) run in Edinburgh for a combined 5,288 feet of elevation.

Then when back I did a combined 32 mile day (highest ever, Sat) including a parkrun of 23.38 (great consolidation).

Monday I did 24.2 miles total after surprisingly having to go into the office (systems down for WFH) so got an extra 2 runs in that weren't scheduled.

This morning did 13.4 miles.

I love seeing those miles @Iceman. That’s amazing!

I am going on 3 and a half months since my last run. But I have an MRI and an orthopedist appointment scheduled later this month. So you’d better keep running because in no time I’ll be coming for those distances too! :)

Thanks! I hope the scans and potential treatment go well. I would love for you to be back without any injury worries and enjoying exercise again fully.

My knee has been hurt for a couple of weeks. Not anything serious but enough where I can’t run, cut or do anything physical without it buckling. Haven’t been doing any cardio. Only thing I can think of doing is just continue to rest until it heals which sucks
