You could do that with pretty much any version of OS X. Apple doesn't track installs like Microsoft does. It violates your agreement, and technically isn't legal. But there's really not much stopping you. I used to have a version of Panther installed on an emulator on my PC.

This used to happen to me under Leopard. Haven't seen it in SL yet. My Mac would say it lost it's connection, but when I clicked on the network icon, it would do a rescan, see my signal, and reconnect.

Not sure what's going on. It might not even be a problem with your computer or AirPort. It could be something like someone in your neighborhood now using a signal that's interfering with yours. Try changing the channel your router broadcasts on and see if any others give you a more stable connection.
I was on Channel 6, tried out Channel 1 for a day....same problems. Then went to the other end of the spectrum and went to Channel 11...still the same.

I should point out that at the same time I upgraded to SL, my sis also bought a new MacBook Pro and we both connect to the same router. This is when my problems started happening, so I don't know if it's the OS or her interfering with me. Or neither.

Any other solutions?

Unfortunately, you'll still need to try every channel just to make sure. It could be that channel 4 will work fine for you. I think I'm using 5 or 7.

As for your sister's laptop, if it was interfering, it would only be while she's online. If that's the case, it could be that your computers are trying to use the same ip address. So she keeps kicking you off for some reason.

There's a ton of different variables to go through.

I'll be picking up my 15" Macbook Pro loaded with Final Cut Pro tomorrow afternoon. Can't ****ing wait!

So after all of my "I will never buy a mac" stuff, I have to buy a mac for my College. So can someone answer this for me? If I load all the same features in both a MacBook 13" and in a MacBook Pro 13" why is the Pro more expensive? Is it the weight, colour and size? Or is there another factor I'm missing?

Also, I'm still really pissed about how I'll have to buy an audio decoder, a 1/8" to Toslink converter, a mini-dv to vga cable and there are only two USB ports.

Hey, does anyone know a good online virus checker for Macs? I'm having a problem with my Firefox crashing and I'm worried I may have picked up a virus :(.

I've heard about ClamAV.

But I doubt it's a virus. Mac doesn't really have any.

hmmm. I don't know what it is then. I have the latest firefox upgrade so that shouldn't be the problem.

Do you have any add-ons installed? It could be one of those crashing Firefox. Try disabling them and see if it crashes when any particular one of them is active.

Is it the Wifi dropping off or is it really crashing?

It is really crashing. The little troubleshooter comes up and everything.

There are so many apps. Looking for anything in particular?

Out of curiousity, has anyone had any luck getting Apple to repair physical damage to a Macbook? A decent sized chunk came out of mine right near the track pad, and the computer is only 4 months old. I know 100% I didn't cause it by dropping it or anything. I'm very careful with it.

I've had no luck.

I sent mine in to get all the worn off pain repaired (and basically get a new keyboard). But because I had a small dent, AppleCare refused to repair it for free because they said the damage invalidated the warranty and that I couldn't prove the dent didn't come from a fall, and that the fall could have resulted in the damage.

How a fall equates to worn paint, I don't know. I tired to argue it with no luck. So I made them ship the mac back with no repairs. At least they had to eat the cost of shipping for screwing me like that.

damn. I may take it in to the mac store and argue my case. It's somewhat sizable. I can actually see down into the motherboard area. I have Apple Care too, so we'll see.

My Mac store said it would be fine, which is why I had them ship it. But AppleCare said nope. (The Mac store won't be able to say for sure if AppleCare will take it because AppleCare is a completely separate company from Apple. And they decide what they'll work on.)

At least I got a few free powercords and adapters from AppleCare. Got about half my warranty money back that way.

^Maybe I'll call them instead. Thanks for the heads up.

No problem. This is something everyone should be aware of. The warranty covers everything but actual damage. :p

I'm gonna have to try that out next time I'm on my mac.

This is true....almost.

Wiedeabo is correct. Apple warranty or the extended Apple Care Warranty, does not cover physical damage for almost everything. There are a few minor exceptions.

Previous generation white macbooks 06-mid 09 all have a common defect in their top cases and bezels. If there is small cracking at the palm rests on the right or left sides on the very bottom edge they will replace it for free even if you are out of warranty. But only up to three years from the original purchase date (most stores are cool about it though and will do it even if you are beyond the three year mark).

Also the bezel (frame around the display) cracks in a similar corresponding spot along the top edge usually where the little nubs are to keep the display slightly separated from the top case. Same deal with it being covered as your top case.

iPhones they will cover your silent/ringer button falling off (and sometimes the volume buttons). But they have to swap the whole phone so there can't be any other damage at all.

Other than that sending anything into Apple Care will certainly get shot down. If you can take it into an Apple Store give it a shot, depending on the type of damage and which genius/technician you are dealing with you might get lucky. If you have multiple stores in your area, then definitely try as many as you can.
