The Official 'Thor Rate & Review' thread - Part 2

Things in movies don't have to be "realistic" or "unrealstic." The Nolan Batman movies are praised for their realism, and they're very unrealistic as well. What people mean when they refer to realism in movies is stuff that just doesn't jump out as completely phony or unbelievable.

The romance could still be believable, and just sped up a bit like romances usually are in movies. The alternative to being based on simple physical lust does not have to be "idealized."

lol You are more blunt than I am Mace. Overall I would have been fine with the kiddie nature of the film if I felt that it had soul and wasn't sooo product based. (Come see the Avenger's kids!!!)

I'm not going to praise a film because it "could've been worse." I'm happy for those who loved the film, really happy but yeah, it didn't do enough for me.

I realize that these are controversial feelings in this extremely positive thread and I'm sure someone is going to ignore what I said, go off topic and the bash Spider-Man movies (I'll bash the 3rd one with you) to make themselves feel better about my opinion. I would like it if we stayed on topic though and had a good talk about Thor though.

Really..Raimi's spidey movies don't need any bashing.

Getting back on topic...

Anyone really like the scene when Loki visited Thor at the SHIELD base and lied to him about Odin? That may have been the best piece of Hemsworth's performance.

Well I guess I was expecting more action since that's what one expects from a comic book movie.

And that isn't to say that more action might've made the film better but we could've done with less of Asgard, I don't maybe it's just me like I said I'm not a big fan of Thor.

You're right, about the action I mean and since you brought up TDK even thought I wasn't comparing any DC comics film the action didn't make the film good it was the performances and story something which Thor had but in tiny quantities kind of like the studio was holding itself back and didn't want too dark of a movie that would traumatize the kiddies buying Happy Meals.

That was exactly what I was thinking while watching both IM2 and Thor. I really hope Marvel steps up its game with Captain America.

I just got back from my second viewing with family and friends, even better the second time around, everyone enjoyed it, great film!!!:thor::up:

But a sped up relationship would probably have jumped out as phony or unbelievable.

As it was it was a nice change of pace for a movie to display a more realistic and "human" relationship. I found it very relatable, I'm surprised more didn't. But to each their own.

Yep. Such a heartbreaking scene! Hiddleston was great in it, i dunno he had a certain flare about him throughout the whole film.

I personally liked that scene more because of what it said about Loki than what it said about Thor, but it was very well played by both Hiddleston and Hemsworth, and is a great example of how a single scene can be used to advance the characterization of two incredibly different characters in a manner that is concise, believable, and relevant to the overall story narrative.

I only answer to Vartha.:o

So, you're basically saying critics know what is quality or not.
That's exactly what I'm saying. They have validity behind their opinion, with cinematic perspective.

Not some overzealous fan boys. They have no investment one way or another, so they have an un-biased looking glass on a film, as opposed to a comic book fan who of course with all due right will be willing to say or do anything to make the film seem as good as possible.

That is stupid.
Might be ..

Yet not near as idiotic as the Loki performance being = to or > than Ledger and Nicholson's Joker performances.

That was a great scene by Hemms, but his shining moment to me was when he was asking Loki to stop trashing the town.

Wow. Ledger vs. Hiddleston debates now. The husband and I actually talked a little about this last night. Both of us agreed that Hiddleston's performance in Thor was superlative. For us, he hit every point, beat just right. He was equal parts manipulative, sympathetic, charming, and desperate. So in context of Loki's emotional arc, he deserves all the praise in the world. Ledger's joker, though, was an entirely different creature than Loki. The audience was never meant to sympathize with him, and to that extent Ledger's performance hit every beat right. I think trying to compare the two, even though they're both villanious roles, will only serve as an excercise in futility. It seems more like bait for people to get into hyperbolic fights.

I like enjoying both actor's takes on the roles instead. :cwink:

Sorry for blowing up Spider-Fan, but I come on and some guy with 30 posts is calling me a loon, for an opinion I wrote and making up other stuff about me.

Thanks for handling it, I see the posts were removed, so all is well.

Anyway back to the action.

I thought his shining moment was his swagger when he thought he had beaten all of the SHIELD agents and was walking towards his hammer. I hope we see a bit of that arrogance in Avengers

You're wrong! No comparison! Hiddleston isn't famous, and Ledger haunted peoples' dreams!!! Their DREEEAAAAAMMS!!!!

This!!!:cool::up:

FTR, I don't see how it's insulting Ledger to say the Hiddleston's performance was on par. I just meant to say that Hiddleston was brilliant, and by far the best villian performance in any Marvel film. In fact it's more a compliment to Ledger if you think about it.

Anyway you have to realize Hiddleston is a pretty young actor and he's trown in these scenes with Sir Anthony Hopkins, one of the greatest actors of this generation, and he absolutely held his own. That's not fanboyism, that's recognizing great talent.

But a sped up relationship would probably have jumped out as phony or unbelievable.

So just about every other movie romance is phony? They don't have to declare their everlasting love for each other and make plans to get married or anything. It just would've been nice to see them connect over something, anything, besides how sexy they each were. Let Thor find an interest in Jane's personality. Let Jane see something in him, and help him be a better person.

As it was it was a nice change of pace for a movie to display a more realistic and "human" relationship. I found it very relatable, I'm surprised more didn't. But to each their own.

That's what it boils down to. Subjective preferences over what people wanted to see in this movie.

I feel like the scene where Loki visited Thor at the SHIELD base was a direct reference to the Ultimates. There was a scene very much like that in Ultimates, plus the way loki was dressed was very much reminiscent of ultimate Loki. Great scene.

LOL! Um, win.

Sometimes, I think I'm too Pollyanna for forums. WHY CAN'T WE JUST ALL GET ALOOOOOONG?!?

I forgot about that! :D That was great. R
