The Dark Knight The Rachel Dawes thread

I dunno, she is kind of like the "Two-Face" from Seinfeld. Sometimes she is really unattractive, other times she just oozes sex appeal. It depends on what she's in, what she's wearing, what her make up and hair are like, etc.

lol thats funny

how sure are we that she's replacing dawes? i realize the reporter is a trade paper, but nothing from nolan or the WB confirm her character, just her casting.

I don't understand this. Wouldn't it just be better to remove Rachael Dawes from the script and replace her with a new character than to recast her?

in my opinion, yes. if a female lead close to bruce in relationship is necessary, just explain that. if we see their chemisty, we'll believe that they matter to one another. then, whatever needs to happen in the script can happen.

i think re-casting is a poor, poor choice. i can think of plenty of ways to make a new female lead work in the story.

Nobody has read the script. Rachel could, hopefully does, have a major role that depends on her prior relationship with Bruce as established in BB. She may be coming back because no other female character (Talia, Selina being the obvious ones) can fulfil the role the Nolans have envisaged for her in this series. I for one would like to see a female character being fully developed through this series of movies, rather than one per movie, as previously.

I assume its to branch into the Harvey Dent storyline, but creative writers should have no problem developning another character within the realm of the sequel itself. We know the Nolans could have done that.

I can kinda see the resemblance to Holmes in this pic...

Still doesn't mean I like recasts.

The absence of Katie bothers me a lot because I find the whole switch distasteful. Its continuity distraction.

For the record I dont even find naked Maggie hot.

Still don't get why the minority naysayers are complaining about Gyllenhaal replacing Holmes. Gyllenhaal is a far better actress and though I understand the continuity distraction bit, I don't think it'll matter that much if Gyllenhaal does a good job.

Who knows, maybe Gyllenhaal will try to emulate Holmes's look and her voice. But since it is a two year break between films, the script could explain that Rachel got some cosmetic surgery during that time. It sounds like a cop-out, but at least it's logical in the context of the film.

And just because there was recasting for The Dark Knight doesn't mean it'll tarnish its reputation, and other movies have recast new actors in the place of established characters. Michael Gambon replaced Richard Harris in the successive Harry Potter movies in the event of Harris's death, and even a minor character like Angelina Johnson was recast for the Potter movies. Brandon Routh was cast as Superman in Superman Returns, which was logically a sequel to the first two Salkind-Donner films, but that was also due to the age, physical ailments and the untimely death of Christopher Reeve. Not to mention there are 6 different James Bonds played by different actors...

Recasting for sequels isn't new. Hollywood's been doing it for ages -- why should this be any different?

Why must she be hot? I don't think the Rachel character is written as this super hot female lead.

Yeah, and most of the time...it sucks.

People aren't complaing that Gyllenhaal is cast as Rachel Dawes moreso than people are complaining about the whole need to recast IN GENERAL and how much of a distraction it can be.

And please tell me that whole cosmetic surgery line was a joke.

she doesn't have to be a girl from the ***** cat dolls, but Bruce Wayne can't be lusting after subpar *****. None the less I don't care, shes a good actress, and so I can't wait.

Lol, more like a complete reach. Let's just leave that idea on the back-burner.

Old white guys under a robe, a hat, and a head full of beard all look the same. :o

Which is completely unlike this situation so I don't know why that was even brought up.

Yeah...in 40 years. And every time there was a recast, the whole crew changed as well.

I love her, finally a pretty chick in the movie. She isn't like all the other fake women in Hollywood, very nice.

alot of you are saying maggie doesn't have to be beautiful because rachel dawes is a DA, & it'll be more realistic this way. i'm confused, do you mean beautiful women arn't capable of being DA's, DA's are never beautiful, or what? i dunno if u meant to be insulting (probably not), but as a woman i find those ideas pretty insulting, so i suggest ppl stop using that arguement.

okay have a whinge ^. reread the first line of your post, that's all they were saying...she's a DA not a model.

MG is an odd casting choice IMO. Not too happy with it. I have a hard time imagining her and Bale on the silver screen together. Hopefully, I'll be proven wrong in '08!

I really just don't care anymore... its a good thing to have our expectations come back down to earth a bit... so this bad news (maybe even good to a few) is actually good b/c it lowers expectations... the bottom line is... people are gonna nit pick everything on Ledger... Nolan, the writers, on any flaws they find... its obvious to me that this film won't be as perfect as Begins (which was far from perfect) but thats okay... I am just hoping for a great summer flick that can entertain me for a good month or so... and then again once I get the DVD... its just a movie anyway and I don't expect it to be flawless... so I am glad my expectations have been lowered to a point where this movie can fulfill realistic expectations

Right on FAT TONLE. Batfans ate some humble pie on this Maggie news.
I havent seen such outrage about this.

But its very understandable because devotees hold on to their characters.
Katie as Rachel, her image and performance was burned on the pysches
of the fans and they're so used to her. Its so hard imagining someone else. I recalled how fandoms were so upset about the recast of the Bewitched movie,Miami Vice and Star Trek.

Has anyone posted the Hollywood Reporter article? Again, not much info but at least it's got a comment from Nolan in regards to Maggie's casting.

Thanks, i hadn't read that qoute before. He makes no mention of you know who in his statement,hmmm...

Doesn't really matter to me whether she's hot or not. I'd just rather they bring back Katie than recast or write the character out.

Why don't you think it'll be as good as Begins?

Everyone and everything good from the first is returning, and then some. Joker and Harvey, with Ledger and Eckhart playing them, are big bonuses over the first right there. Katie Holmes, who most considered the weak link of the cast, has been replaced. Jon Nolan is writing (I'm actually a Goyer fan, but Jon is better).

I'm always cautiously optimistic, but I see nothing that seems to be holding this one back.

I'm guessing because the new cast additions aren't as prestigious or universally loved as the first.
