The Rank and Rate Man of Steel thread

Man of Steel is easily my favourite Superman film. I felt is was modern and enjoyable, and miles better than SR. This is what was needed. I felt the complaints were overboard and overly harsh. When I saw it I was expecting something lacklustre and overly brooding, but it never came for me. Though I never really took to the past Superman films, so keep that in mind. 8/10 was my score.

The reviewers were making it sound like Clark was Bruce Wayne all over again.

Rating 9/10 for me.

Solid movie. Extremely enjoyable and a great new, modern take on Superman. Casting was spot on especially for Lois and Superman. Donner's Superman films will always own a part of my childhood but this new rendition of Supes is what SR should have been.

There are problems with the film which have already been said. Pacing was off at times, dialogue felt clunky, very little character development and obvious plot issues...but none of these mattered to me at all because this was what I wanted in a Supes movie and it delivered.

One gripe I don't agree with is Clark being emo. I don't think he was ever emo. I only saw Clark as disappointed or upset more so than ever being mopey or depressed. He was never just laying around being bummed out.

I felt the film gave the right dramatic weight to it's plot and situations. Clark/Superman seemed to be a good person, thoughtful and caring. But the man had a lot on his plate, a lot to balance. People want a hero who is proactive and totally knows what to do in any given situation. But I liked what they did here. There was more of a sense of nuance. Of Clark wanting to help and be free to do as he pleases, but he also knew what the possible ramifications of who and what he was would mean for the wider world and the people in it. If some want to say it came off as "Emo", I just have to say they saw it much differently than I did.

In terms of Origin movies Id rank it thusly

1.BB
2.Spiderman1/MOS/Ironman
3.Thor/Superman the moviw
4.Capt America/Hulk
5.Xmen first class
6.GreenLantern/TASM

If we are ranking origin movies:

1. Batman Begins
2. Spider-Man (2002)
3. Superman: The Movie
4. Iron Man
5. X-Men: First Class (does this count?)
6. Man of Steel

And before that is accused of low, keep in mind that almost every superhero movie is an origin film. DD, GR, Punisher, Thor, CA, Hulk, TIH, TASM, etc. It is DONE.

But those six I find to be genuinely engaging and interesting films.

That's a solid list, and I agree with your top choice completely.

Origins
1) Batman Begins
2) Man of Steel
3) Iron Man
4) Spider-Man (2002)/TASM - The reason I split this is because I have more of a connection to the Raimi trilogy because I grew up on them. The excitement I had for that first film (and whole series) is really unmatched. But if I'm to compare Spider-Man to TASM as objectively as I can, as just a film, I think TASM is a stronger movie (better writing, acting, directing, etc...) That's another discussion though
5) Thor

***Honorable mention to Superman:The Movie, but I was always more of a Superman II fan over the original. Superman: TM always moved too slow for my tastes and got bogged down too often. It also doesn't hold up well overtime, those movies are borderline unwatchable for me nowadays and I'm ahuge Superman fan.

***Batman '89 also gets an honorable mention. I need to re-watch that soon, it's been awhile.

I didn't think Thor was a good origin movie at all. I'd rank Captain America higher than Thor. Thor was about getting his hammer back. It had little to no development. Didn't see anything about how he became the best warrior of Asgard. We actually get more of Loki's origin than Thor's.

I felt THOR was about a "great" man (god?) learning his short comings and becoming a "good man". I could be wrong. MOS could be seen as the story of a "good" man who is burdened with becoming ''great". :word:

I liked Thor for really the world they created on Asgard, it was spectacular. The movie has a lot of shortcomings that hinder my enjoyment on subsequent viewings, but given that the list of decent-good origin movies is fairly short it's kind of there by default. I could have put Batman 89 there, but like I said, it's been awhile since I watched it.

And I just never viewed Superman: The Movie as especially good, even when I was a kid I just never really liked it despite loving the character.

The Punisher (Thomas Jane version) I really liked but it's not in the same category of the Marvel Studio films imho. And all the X-Men movies (even First Class) are sort of just bleh to me. First class was a good movie, but I just don't really care about the X-men generally and FC never really engaged me.

I agree. The 'emo' word is perhaps overused because I wouldn't say it applies here.

'Emo' doesn't apply to MOS, but it is etched into every frame of SR.

I'd rate and rank it with theatrical Superman movies.

1. Superman The Movie – 10/10
2. Superman II – 7/10
3. Man of Steel – 6/10
4. Superman III – 4/10
5. Superman Returns – 4/10
6. Superman and the Mole-Men – 4/10
7. Superman IV – 2/10

The problem is they didn't show how Thor became great or him being great. He's supposed to be this great warrior but someone needed to teach him how to be selfless as an adult? Clark was already selfless as a little kid, so I'm not convince Thor is that great.

I think MOS was more about an extraordinary person finding his place in the world.

Thor was funny, and had a sweet moment with the love interest. That's why people like it.

Just saw the movie, and.......i was disappointed.
The movie lacks soul, that's the best way i can describe, everything just goes with the flow, nothing is particularly meaningful.
Everything is just convoluted, there is too much brawl and not enough heart.

There isn't one single character that stands out, but the best is Jonathan Kent and Jor-El.

I wasn't expecting a great adaptation, just like Nolan's Batman isn't (amazing movies, superb trilogy, but nothing more than his version and not the real deal), so, i wasn't expecting to feel disappointed by it.....i did.
Not a bad movie, but not a great one either

7/10

Ranking it on a top 5 comic book movie, it doesn't even enter

1 - The Dark Knight
2 - Ang Lee's Hulk
3 - Hellboy
4- Kick-Ass
5- X-Men 2

Theatrical release-wise
my rank of all Superman films
1. Superman:The Movie
2. Man of Steel
3. Superman II
4. Superman Returns
5. Superman IV: The Quest For Peace
6. Superman III
*Lol yes i rated IV above III. Even though IV is a mess, it actually has superpowered fight scenes and actually feels like a Superman film. III felt like Richard Pryor comedy hour*

I agree it was fun and yes people liked it, but that's not what we were talking about. I was judging it was an origin movie. It didn't really explain much about who Thor is and how he developed which is what an origin is about. I don't remember people liking the love interest though.

But it is explained who he is, how impulsive he is.

And yes, one of the very worst love interests ever.
