The Rebooted "Keep Hope Alive" (that the rights can revert back to Marvel) Thread - Part 10

Yeah, I'm gonna wait until there's some kind of official statement before I put stock into Venom and that Black Cat film being part of the MCU. From marvel.com or something. 'Cause I see it as Sony still trying create a shared universe (and get money) using the Spider-Man film rights while still using Marvel. Its doubtful it will work, considering Sony's 'involvement' in ASM2, but who knows? Pretty soon we'll get that 'Aunt May' movie that we always never wanted to have.
The former head of Sony and the producer of Spider-Man Homecoming is pretty official. It's more official than leaks from 4Chan or Reddit.

A good studio also trusts their directors to do their jobs and they wouldn't have hired Simon Kinberg if they all felt the same way as you do.

I'd say its obvious they see more in the man than a lot of us here do. If they felt the same as me for example they wouldn't let him near a script, never mind the Directors chair.

FOX also trusted Trank to direct a competently made Fant4stic and look how that turned out. That said, I agree that FOX trusts Kinberg more than that to do the job and direct a competently made film. Whether it will be good or not is up for speculation.

Yeah, and they trusted Tim Story and they trusted Rob Bowman and they trusted Mark Steven Johnson and they trusted Brett Ratner and they trusted Gavin Hood.

Overall, Fox has hired 6 bad directors for Marvel films and 4 good ones, so the idea that Kinberg must be good because Fox hired him doesn't pass an objective test.

Like with FF, I feel fairly confident Fox sycophants won't be back to say "I told you so" after Dark Phoenix is out.

Yeah, I don't think Pascal would have just blind sided Feige with that. I would imagine there's an agreement in principle. Ie: Sony's Spider-man spin-offs can make references to MCU stuff, but any such reference would be subject to approval from Marvel.

In general I'd think the films will be more stand alone (like Netflix DD etc), but I'd hope Marvel does get some input on those films. Sony would be wise to get their guidance at any rate.

This might be interesting to see play out. Obviously it's better for Sony if it's set in the MCU... but for the privilege of making that official, they'll have to provide certain concessions/compensation to Marvel and I'm sure they don't want to do that.

But they do have Spider-Man rights and they can make non MCU Spider-Man films. So if Venom, for example, like in the comics is connected to Spider-Man, and Sony makes that clear during the story, they're not doing anything wrong.

But at this moment, Spider-Man is in the MCU and starring in films that have other MCU characters, so movie-goers will naturally assume Venom and other Spidey related films are in the MCU. So Sony could play a game in which they are very careful about the content of the films (and people like Amy Pascal will have to be more careful about what they say). If they play it right, Sony could get the benefit of the viewers' belief that the film is in the MCU while being careful to not do anything that would infringe licensing agreements.

The idea of setting these films in a non-MCU world seemed kind of crazy to me, but I'm starting to think Sony's plan is to technically have it set in a different world while generally treating it as if it's in the same Universe.

... but if that assumption is correct, Amy Pascal will definitely have to be careful about what she says.

I can't imagine that Marvel entered into an agreement with Sony that would allow them ANY chance of damaging the Marvel comic book universe. I'm sure that any references to MCU would have to be approved and that Marvel would take how good the movie is overall into account. The last thing they want is to have a stinker out there that is in MCU. Not every MCU movie has been great, but none of them have been rated "Rotten" (to use one example).

Yeah, but the thing is, imagine they just ignore the issue.

They can mention Spider-Man all they want. He could be a major character (though perhaps never seen or only shown briefly and in costume similar to Batman in Suicide Squad).

So everybody would know they were viewing a film in the Spider-Man Universe and if they infer that is also the MCU, that's not Sony's problem.

As long as nobody in the film specifically mentions Iron Man, Hulk etc., they'll be perfectly within their rights, but if they are mentioning Spider-Man (again within their rights) 90% of the audience (who doesn't study these things like we do) will simply assume they are in the same world they've been seeing Tom Holland swinging around in.

Marvel can't force them to display a big statement at the beginning of the film saying: "Warning! This film does not take place in the Marvel Universe - The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Dr. Strange etc. DO NOT EXIST IN THIS UNIVERSE, so get that out of your head right now." :funny:

My wife, for example, knows next to nothing about the technical details of these things, but she has seen Civil War, and she's seen all the Spider-Man films, and she's looking forward to seeing Homecoming. She knows Venom from SM3, so she knows he's connected to Spider-man. I would expect, if I didn't explain it to her, she would likely see Venom and she would be assuming the whole time it was connected to the Spider-Man in homecoming (even if the film didn't specifically tell her that).

In fact, maybe I can experiment, avoid telling her any of this, and see how she does interpret it. :woot:

Thanks for your feedback guys.

I too would prefer Marvel would have some some say over these spin-offs, but I have a feeling it will be minimal, based on Feige's comments and just the amount of other things they're handling right now.

I would prefer if the often rumored Sony film division sale finally happened. Disney would buy it and these spin-offs should then be placed on hold until after Avengers 4.

Just saw it on comicbook.com lol

new Fantastic Four film is in development that doesn’t focus on the Marvel’s team original members. Instead, the feature is set to follow Franklin and Valeria, the two children of Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Woman. According to the reports, the Human Torch and the Thing will also appear in the film as the kid-friendly film follows its young leads.

Tonally, it appears as if the reboot is meant to feel similar to The Incredibles. The aesthetic shift will completely separate the new Fantastic Four film from its predecessors; Fox’s most recent take on the heroic family was panned for being too dark while its early-2000s take failed to impress fans with its narrative.

Depends on if it is a serious plan (in which I would say F*&^ that!!) or if they are just doing it as part of a negotiating strategy (try to show that they are going to make another to convince Marvel to make them an offer). The problem with it as a negotiating strategy is they already did that one and it lost them $100 million, they really do not want to play chicken again.

Crap idea, crap studio, crap writer

Hard to stomach this, whatever it is. Is it just a negotiating tactic? Perhaps. Feels more like a threat than a promise to me.

Not sure they can get away with doing what amounts to a spin off, rather than the FF proper. Kinda like doing Wolverine before X-Men, or Elektra before Daredevil.

I think we should get ready for another $&*! storm.

It will likely be worse than for Fant4stick

No. I want the FF to return to Marvel. Not happy about the FF not being in the MCU. Hard pass.

Confirm it FOX. Go ahead.
You'll be 2 for 2 in as many weeks.
First simple Simon for Phoenix.
Now this crap
