I’d love to know what the new number is, too. And what they’ll get for selling off the RSOs per the DOJ’s order. There seems to be plenty of money now to go get Spidey, Hulk, Namor, theme park, etc. I know it’s us that mainly cares about that stuff and it’s smaller potatoes to them but still.

I guess with Venom its that fact that I've been burned 3 times now by Sony. Spider-Man 3, Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Venom.Venom was Strike 3. I'm out.

Have you seen the Venom movie yet?
If you haven't, wait to call it a strike, maybe check the user reviews thread: most of the users here who already saw it, like me, are fellow Venom fans and we liked it.
It's no masterpiece, alright, but it is funny and worth your while IMO.

Ah yes, the see it for yourself argument. It would be worthwhile considering, had we not been through all this before. Like Darkprime said, this isn't our first rodeo. With Sony, or with a similar situation: Fant4stic, Catwoman, etc. We've seen enough to know we don't want to see this movie.

Then don't see it. Nobody is forcing you to.

Assuming much?
No, my argument is that for me it is a good Spider-Man-less Venom film. Make what you want of my opinion, of course.
My point is just that, for now, Venom fans are enjoying it; it is a positive counter point to the reviews.
I can not assure anybody that they will like it but I still recommend it.

I see movies base primarily on trailers and reviews. The trailer made it look absolutely lousy, and now the reviews are confirming it's really not a very good movie.

We could find people saying Joe Dirt 2 or Fant4stic were good movies if we really went looking for them, but why bother?

I'm not going to waste my time and give money to Sony that they haven't earned just so I can say: "Yeah, that really was as bad as the trailer and reviews made it look."

I never claimed anyone was, but I still wanted to comment on it.
But thank you for your feedback and permission which I never requested, nor needed. See? You did it too. Feel free to go see the turd movie.

I'm not assuming anything. I responded to what you wrote and what Darkprime wrote. What did you take as an assumption?

I'm just saying to fellow Venom fans that Venom fans are mostly enjoying it very much, while still acknowledging it has issues.
Again, people can make of it what they want.

I too would have preferred every character on deck for the Mcu, but this being not yet the case I gave the movie a chance and I like it.
Guilty, I guess?

Glad you enjoyed the film pity it couldn't be better. Will probably wait for a stream myself to watch it.

All of us want to see marvel have all their characters back, i just don't see how if this film is good or bad it really changes much. I think if sony had announced an extension of their spidey deal with marvel then there would be a lot less hate in here though.

I was absolutely not saying "see it for yourself", I recommend it. You reduced my opinion of a movie that I saw to some stereotype, I was just expressing my impression, like the critics, you know.
If anyone reading the reviews and the fan reactions is still not interested in going, that's probably the best decision for them, of course.

I stand corrected, you did not in fact tell Dark to go see it, just asked him if he had.

Well I'm not a Venom fan. I do generally like Marvel characters and films, but this film doesn't appeal to me in any way.

I am a huge Fantastic Four fan and I had a lot of people on here telling me "You need to give it a try before you say you don't like it.", and that kind of pissed me off. I had seen enough to know that it wasn't anything like the movie I wanted to see, and I wasn't going to give Fox money after what they had done to my favorite characters.

Your intention seems more sincere than some of those people who just seemed to desperately want Fox to make money for some reason, but I'm afraid when I read your comment, I couldn't avoid flash-backs.

Question for you. If sony announced that peter parker was staying with the mcu and that the sonyverse was the spideyverse with miles morales as this universe's spiderman would you be more supportive of future films (assuming they were half decent)?

I think the argument to see or not Venom should depend solely on what you yourself would enjoy or not enjoy -- and not reliant on the critics score or the dollars going to Sony.

My problem with this movie has nothing to do with the MCU or Disney.

If Sony had done a completely separate Spider-Man and introduced Venom properly, without jumping the gun and critical story points that are necessary to introduce the character, I would have accepted it and would be there in the midnight previews. Instead they have rushed this, following the whims of a man we all know cares nothing about story or character, but just about the bottom line and toys (when he could actually benefit from them).

Let's assume they can't do a separate Spidey because it's tied to the MCU character loan contract. Then they should have waited for the opportunity to tie a Venom story into that MCU Spidey. Or at the very least wait for the MCU Spidey to at minimum feature the symbiote in an after credits scene, so that they could then spin their movie from that.

Long story short, and to answer your question: Yes. I would give it a chance in the scenario you described.

I'm actually psyched for the animated Spiderverse movie. Because it shows quality. They actually put effort into it.

I think all Marvel films should be made by Marvel. Post-Fox Sony is going to become the black sheep of the CBM genre. How is Sony going to justify moving forward with Morbius when Venom is an utter critical failure? I know I sound like a terrible person and I truly feel bad for saying this - but I hope the box-office for Venom matches the critical reception. It's the only way to ensure, not only that Spider-Man will remain where he belongs for the foreseeable future but also Sony pulling the plug on these spinoffs films that people DONT want.

Imagine if Sony became the next "Transformers" of Hollywood. Making God awful films that critics hate but audiences love. Hope it doesn't come to that.

If only Sony had waited to Introduce Venom properly Into the MCU

Unlike Venom, Into the Spider-Verse looks really good. I have to say while I would want Sony to lose the live-action Spidey films rights—I wouldn’t mind them keeping the animated theatrical rights and keep making animated Spidey flicks if Into the Spider-Verse is good(I very much suspect it will be).

I'm just not interested in Into the Spider-Verse, honestly. Probably because it is a cartoon movie. I'll see it, but I don't have hype for it.

I saw someone on reddit mention that due to Disney losing sky which was about $40 billion of the 71 billion they were paying and now that they lost that asset that the actual cost of buying fox is now closer to 30-35 billion. is that right?

Here's a quick & dirty look at the numbers (please feel free to make corrections)

Purchase of Old Fox $71.3B
Absorption of Fox debt 13.8B
Less
39% Sky (15.0B) est
Fox Sports Net RSNs (20.0B) est
50% Endemol Shine ( 1.5B) est

Net Cost 48.6B est

I've got the net at about $50B, which could go up or down depending on what they get for the RSNs & Endemol and if they buy out Kabletown's slice of Hulu. Though unrelated to this deal, I wouldn't be surprised if the Mouse put its 50% stake in A&E Networks on the market now that they've picked up the FX and NatGeo Networks. That was valued at $26B in total about 5 years ago, but has likely dropped a considerable amount due to the movement to streaming.

Venom: Our current tracking range stands between $50 million and $70 million.
A Star Is Born: Our updated range stands between $40 million and $60 million for the weekend.

They dropped the lower end of the range, right?

That's a pretty wide range for both movies. Not exactly bold predictions.
