Honestly, for me neither attempt came close.
First, the facial features weren't warped enough to look ape-like. They just looked like the actors faces painted blue with a little fur added. To look more ape-like they should have modified the mouth and jaw area a little more. But most importantly, the body proportions and posture were too human. Beast should have longer arms with larger hands and feet. He should also look wider and heavier than either version showed... I think it's impossible to do with prosthetics alone. Maybe if they incorporate some puppetry with new make-up techniques, but that seems overly complicated when you have a better option like motion capture.
