Fox seems very risk averse. They either want to make X-Men films that they know have a large following and guaranteed minim BO, or they want to do FF and Deadpool on the cheap to reduce risk.

Silver Surfer would be a huge risk because not only would it require a big-budget to do right, but he doesn't have nearly the fan-base of FF.

FF had (prior to 2005 when Fox first started screwing them up) a huge fan-base that couldn't wait to see them on the big-screen. Silver Surfer has a cult-following at best.

Marvel could almost certainly make a huge blockbuster out of Silver Surfer. Fox hasn't done anything comparable and I'd be surprised if they'd take the risk of trying.

Every producer of the X-men have said they want to use celestial characters in the future and Phoenix will be touched on in Apocalypse so you never know.

And are you forgetting they already did SS so they aren't afraid of that. The only reason why they never did a solo for him (which they did have plans of around ROTSS) was because that film was horrible though that character was the single most well received part.

At any rate the convo is moot as they are probably trying to find a way to collaborate or get a deal in place.

So if Fox was to be $#@$@ and make this spin off just to keep the rights again would they have to do something similar to what they did with Origins.

The FF name is mud right now thanks to Fox so throwing around spin off idea's for a failed reboot doesn't sound that wise and since they'd have to add "Fantastic Four" in the title to serve it's main purpose I don't see this getting Fox anywhere.

I see the Russo brothers are saying they'd like to have Woverine, so that adds them to the list including James Gunn and Tim Miller as people who have been talking about using characters their studios don't control in the past few weeks.

I think that means one of two things, both of them good.

1. A deal is already done and the directors are starting to build buzz for the possibilities that will create.

2. A deal isn't done, but the directors (on both sides) are pushing hard for one.

They are probably pushing for it like they did for Spidey. BTW I don't really care for wolvie in the MCU, I want my Fantastic Four!

It's odd that they would mention X-Men characters, when FF would be an obvious bigger priority. This leds me to believe a deal might be done already, they can't talk about it, so they talk about the X-Men.

This means nothing. Writers, directors all have characters they would love to use in their movies, but can't because of film rights. This is nothing new. Directors also don't run Marvel. They just make movies.

I'm sure management at Marvel isn't as dismissive of Director's desires and the value of those directors to the company as you are. If they were, they wouldn't have made as many good films as they have, and they wouldn't have attracted as many talented directors as they have.

It doesn't matter if a company is making movies, running shoes, faucets, whatever. If the people actually making the things tell management: "I could make a better product if I had item X." good management listens to that every time and does whatever is within reason to get item X.

Your statement implies Marvel has lousy management, and I don't buy that for a moment.

Agreed. Fox will keep X-Men for a long long time yet (unlike FF its a money making franchise for them).

What isn't inconceivable anymore (it was until FFINO failed) is Disney and Fox collaborating on a crossover event down the line (treat the MCU and x-verse as alternate realities so both can go back to their own stables afterwards).

Not something I'd think is in the works at all at this time, but something they might be willing to work together on when the time is right.

My point is that if any deal is going to be made between Fox and Marvel, it's not going to be the directors who make this happen. Marvel knows that storytelling is limited because of movie rights and Marvel has always wanted those rights back, so the Russos commenting about a Fox character they would like to use doesn't really come across as any evidence of anything. Directors have been saying that for years. So, what? My point is that nothing has changed.

I'd say it all depends on the story they want to tell, but it's likely that once they were introduced, they would simply become part of the universe and used as appropriate.

For example, in GOTG, we got "The Kree" in the form of Ronan. I doubt that's the last we'll see of them.

I don't think the Skrulls would be the same kind of over-arching character that Thanos is, though they could do something like that if they chose to.

Skrulls I think always worked because they were effectively deus ex machina due to their covert nature so it could be one film then the next showing the aftermath.

With Mystique being featured so prominently in the X-Men films, they'll have to be careful to not have elements that feel too familiar

I don't think it's a problem unless they start doing crossovers with MCU and Fox's X-Men universe. And the Skrulls are aliens, not mutants, so even with similar powers they won't be the same.

They are very different characters, but we've seen so many scenes in which we think we're watching one character only to find out it's Mystique that I think Marvel has to avoid giving us similar moments. There are still a lot of really cool things they can do with the Skrulls, but I just think they have to avoid those scenes that will feel too similar to what we've already seen.
