The Rebooted "Keep Hope Alive" (that the rights can revert back to Marvel) Thread - Part 6

Principal photography for Origins began in Jan 2008. This means the decisions we're talking about were made in 2007. Not only was Marvel Studios just a concept, pending the results of their experiment with Paramount (Iron-Man in 2008), but Feige would be in a much less favorable situation in order to shoot down bad ideas. Arad was still around and as you know Ike was still barking orders for a long time after that.
At the time, I recall Feige was still the President of Production, and David Maisel was the president/chairman.

There's no way Marvel doesn't get at least some share in the profits, otherwise I feel like Disney ultimately would have nixed the deal. Why make another studio's movie for free?

I read somewhere that Marvel will get something if the film reaches certain Box office milestones, but yeah overall I think the deal favors Sony more.

Not really. If Marvel's still getting all the merchandise money and he can appear in Marvel Studios films like Infinity War.

They're not doing it for free. Spidey makes a $1b in merchandising and the better the movies are the bigger the take from merchandise. And if Sony continues to make crappy films then merch will begin to plummet. So who better to secure their investment then Marvel controlling how the films are made when the box office is chump change compared to merchandise?

What bothers me now is how Fox will handle the F4 franchise moving forward? They clearly can't turn a profit on films but do they feel it worth it to continue making crappy films and taking a loss if they can still leverage a Marvel character here and there with Marvel Studios?

Yup, the big prize with Spider-man is his merchandising, and Marvel have complete control of it. It is supposed to make as much per year as Batman and Superman combined, Marvel made far more from the merchandising for ASM2 than Sony made from the film. A successful Spider-man film raises his status and increases the merchandise that Marvel sells.

As for the F4 its the big question we have been asking here for a while. Fox have shown that they can't make a successful film with the franchise, and have ended up turning it toxic. A successful F4 film would need the right film maker and a studio willing to invest a lot of money, and after Fant4stic the chances of anyone being willing to risk they career is low. So if Fox are not planning to use the rights then what is their plan?

I stand corrected. Did not realize that Origins started it's shoot that early. Also, my understanding of Marvel Studios's formation was overly simplified.

Edit: Thankfully the situation behind the scenes is much better now.

We will know for sure after the movie is out and DIS releases its financials. Feige and co are probably getting a per contract basis on the movie, but what we know for certain is that DIS pays a certain percentage of the BO gross (with a limit) to SNE for every spiderman movie released

It's not one-sided at all. Marvel/Disney still control all the merchandising and TV rights for Spider-Man. Meaning they will be the ones collecting the profits for the toys and merchandise associated with Spider-Man: Homecoming.

They already had control of all that before this latest deal.

Quite a bit more actually. That's where Marvel is laughing to the bank. They hold the Deadpool merch rights as well, which is why you'll see little movie related stuff, but plenty of comics DP items.

And they still control it after. Win for Marvel.

You're correct, Marvel will never make an R-rated movie and Deadpool would not be anywhere near as raunchy or violent if he was at Disney.

If he's on the big screen, that is. If he were on Netflix, well, sky's the limit.

Punisher definitely said it under his breath a few times in Daredevil

Did he? I'll have to rewatch.

He only said it once. During the rooftop argument on "New York's Finest," after Matt said 'What about hope,' Frank said 'Oh f***, you want to talk about Santa Claus?'

They don't say f*** in the Netflix shows though.

The lack of profanity seems a bit odd to me considering the violence (especially with Frank in Daredevil, like the brutal prison fight). Same with the Walking Dead. The rest of the content is R-Rated, so why go shy over some f-bombs? Even X-Men dropped 2 in recent films and got away with it

I better hear a plentiful amount of F-Bombs in the upcoming Netflix hit series 'F is for Frank'

Luke Cage had a fair bit of swearing as well. As well as female body parts on display.

Well I saw an article a little bit ago about the Russos scouting locations for Infinity war and they showed a picture which was removed after it was posted but showed this grandiose hallway with columns and such the article said diehard fans were optimistically saying it looked like something from Latveria, Castle Doom. However it's probably Thanos related but what if...what if...what a shocker and a half that would be....

Im posting a redditor's pitch for an MCU Fantastic Four here because i thought it was perfect:

"How would you do an MCU Fantastic Four movie?

I think having them gain their powers by going to space makes too much sense at this point not to do. After Infinity War, the Earth's government will be desperate to find a way of defending itself from alien threats. Have Reed Richards invent the first warp drive, and the Four gain their abilities testing it.

Also, I would call their shuttle The Fantasy, so the media will be calling them The Fantastic Four before they even get their powers."

Great idea. I was thinking of making them space adventurers in the 1960s that got trapped in the negative zone. The battle in Infinity Wars ripped a hole into the negative zone and free the four out. In their own movie, we can get flashbacks to how they got their powers. We certainly don't need another origin.

It's really hard to introduce the F4 without an origin story, but another origin would be overkill. I'm wondering how the team would be affected by the Sokovia Accords, but since this is a team that has public approval, I'm assuming they would play ball with the government, at least in the beginning.

Maybe the team has existed for a short time with powers, but they haven't gone public yet, which is why no one has heard of them? Or the Government announces their "Fantastic 4" program after the split of the Avengers. I don't know, I'm just coming up with ideas close to midnight.

Even better

Have them floating around in space trapped in a shard of glass as it flips around. The Infinity War explosions rip it apart and set them free. Long forgotten and pissed off they return to earth with powers as "The Forgotten Four". A new spin on them.

Yeah, was thinking about Origins and recall 'Deadpool' being mentioned at some point (before they woke him up I think?).

Viper and Silver Samurai I'm pretty sure were never named though, so it might be Marvel didn't have a say.

Silver Samurai was named by Yukio during Yashida's funeral.

According to Gunn, this has happened multiple times in the past. One would think other instances are probably like the ones with Viper and Silver Samurai. They just aren't publicized.

It's not a signal that it's happening with Fantastic Four, Galactus and Silver Surfer.

Just remember, a few short years ago, Marvel offered Fox an extension on Daredevil in exchange for BORROWING Silver Surfer and Galactus. Fox said now. We saw how that turned out.
