The Rebooted "Keep Hope Alive" (that the rights can revert back to Marvel) Thread - Part 8

Not sure why you only seem to have an issue with the X-Men being ousted from these things?

Because I couldn't care less about the FF. I think they are crap characters (Except for Invisible Woman), who are only great because of the incredible Rogue Gallery.

The sooner they are returned to Marvel the better. The FF are the main reason I can't get new X-Men video games or animation anymore so I actually developed a dislike for them.

Well, props for being honest. I, among a few regulars in this thread, would respectfully disagree.

That isn't true. Disney have been avoiding supporting all Fox Marvel films since 2009. The X-Men themselves being with Fox is just as much to blame for a drought on games and animation as the FF are. Perhaps even more so considering the X-Men's value.

At least you still have plenty of X-Men titles being released in the books each month. There's no sign yet when the FF book might return.

The biggest victim of the 'brinkmanship' between Disney and Fox has been Fantastic Four fans by far imo.

A better question is if you hate the F4 so much, then why do you post here? Not you Wobbly but Leo.

A better question is if he's been here for over a year and has over 2,000 posts, why doesn't he have a 100x100 avatar yet?

I actually thought this thread was made in hopes that all rights would revert back to Marvel. Not just The F4.

But better one franchise then none I guess.

This thread was originally created in the FF forum and the title referred specifically to the FF rights. It previously won thread of the year.

The Fant4stic defenders tried to shut this thread down, and for a while it was closed, but then it sprung back to life in defiance. Since the FF forum was closed after the rousing success of Fant4stic, this was the only thread that survived and was moved into the general Marvel section. So it had the last laugh.

That looks awesome. The Jack Kirby FF looks so great, and Reed always looked more of an adventurer than just a nerd, which has always been my preference.

I think Herb Trimpe might've drawn the FF a bit like Kirby too. And maybe others too.

I think this was by Trimpe but in a Kirby style:

Although I could be wrong and it could be Kirby himself, but I recall reading it wasn't.

I think that is Herb. Big fan as well.

Are there any actors around today who look like a classic 1960s leading man?

That would be the type I would want for Reed this time round.

I don't know if that type really seems to get into acting in Hollywood now though. They just look different these days.

Yeah, I know what you mean. William Holden types..

Jon Hamm has classic leading man looks but is totally wrong for Reed. Following the Spader-Ultron casting, I always thought another old buddy of RDJ would be a good Reed. Anthony Michael Hall. Similar face. Is gray now. Still young enough. Can play smart.

I think he works largely because of the setting of Madmen, but how about Jon Hamm?

And if not for the complications, I think Michael Fassbender could make great Reed.

Why is Jon Hamm totally wrong? He can play strong, confident, stoic, arrogant.

I don't know about Johnny, but Jon Hamm, Terry Crews and Alice Eve would be my choices for Reed, Ben and Sue.

Hamm is fine, but I think Reed should have more charisma, a la Clooney. Not saying Clooney for Reed, but he's got that natural, innate charisma.

I know he gets bandied about for comic book roles quite often, but Ryan Gosling has grown a lot on me as a possible choice for Reed. I think he has the appropriate look and is a good age for it considering the earliest we could plausibly get a MCU FF film is 2020.

But Reed and Sue are the ones I always waffle on as far as casting goes. I still stand by my choices of Seth Rogen for Ben and Charlie Rowe for Johnny though.

I've seen Rogen's name thrown around for Ben a bit, but I can't see it. Voice wise and if he did mo-cap, sure, but I couldn't see him as a former football player and gang member (If they go that route)

Anyone who's been following this thread knows I want Alice Eve for Sue Storm.

Couldn't see Jamie Bell as a former football player and gang member either. Oh wait... :o

I'd like Blake Lively for Sue. She has a real warmth to her and a charisma. I loved watching her in The Age of Adaline and The Shallows.

Jon Hamm wouldn't be bad. I think he'd need a slightly different hairstyle though. His hairstyle might suit Mad Men, but it isn't really a Reed hairstyle, which is more tighter curls than straight and slicked back.

I think the interesting thing with Jon Hamm - to your point earlier - is that if you take a classically handsome actor and dress him in the styles of the 1960's, he will seem like the leading men of the 1960's.

This guy makes you think we just don't have the actors who can play the classic leading man anymore:

But then you see him here:

And there's no question he can pull it off.

And that's why I'm cautious with the idea of Jon Hamm. He seems like he could really work, but I think the reason he seems so right is we've seen him play a character that is very similar in wardrobe and personality to the original Reed Richards. I'm sure there are 1000 other actors (as I mentioned, Michael Fassbender is one that pops to mind) who could do it just as well or better if given the chance, but we've already seen Hamm playing a character very recognizable as similar to the early versions of Reed and that gives him an unfair advantage.

I'd like a younger Johnny, someone close in age to Tom Holland.

Hamm's definitely got the classic superhero look, but he also ticks off a couple of boxes that would specifically appeal to the MCU. He's terrific at comedy - I don't want a jokey Reed, but a dry sense of humor would be a benefit. He's also around the age I would see an MCU Mr. Fantastic. And since his movie career hasn't really taken off, he gives Feige and Co. the benefit of a "name" without a crazy high price tag. I'm sure there are others that could do the job, but I could see him as the "dad" of the MCU post RDJ.

There were many times when I was watching Madmen (in the early seasons) that I thought "That's Reed Richards".

In those early seasons, Don Draper was so good and so sure of himself it was like he was operating at a whole different level than those around him. And he knew it and it made him cocky and arrogant and dismissive of others. And while it was clear he cared about some of the people around him, he was incapable of expressing it properly.

Some of those elements reminded me quite a bit of how I imagine Reed Richards.
