The Rebooted "Keep Hope Alive" (that the rights can revert back to Marvel) Thread - Part 8

I think you are right on waiting it out, and I think that's the current strategy; they are sort of making Fox sweat it out at the moment. Because in the immediate future, especially with the Spider-Man deal, Marvel doesn't need these property rights right now. But I'm thinking bigger picture 10-15 years from now, they will want them.

Yeah, the way Fox held production until so close to the estimated reversion would seem to indicate that they were hoping that Marvel would swoop in with an offer. Except Marvel called their buff and Fox lost millions.

Disney should just throw like $200 mil at Fox and take 'em back now
be the most money Fox'll ever manage to make off of them

For that much, they could get it, but they probably want XMen rights as well. A similar deal to what they offered for distribution rights to Paramount owned movies would get it done. The movies Paramount owned the rights to were hype, and FF - right now - is very toxic.

I was talking to a co worker of mine today and we were talking about comic book movies and how all 3 FF movies were garbage. He wondered why Marvel made such great movies like Civil War and Avengers, but garbage like FF. I told him about the legal situation and to look out for the real Marvel Studios logo so he knows which ones are made by Marvel, and he was like, "ohhhh that makes a lot of sense". We then started talking about what Marvel could do with the FF and a "Hulk vs Thing" brawl happening on the big screen.

Not sure. It might not happen by 2022. It could happen earlier. Hypothetically, some sort of deal is made a year or two years from now? I don't think it's impossible at all. I just don't think it has happened yet.

I'm honestly not worried about it at all. It's just the waiting game now.

If I was in an Ike Perlmutter or Bob Iger position, I'd be campaigning and working day and night to work out some sort of Fantastic Four deal. If content and IP are king, it's in Marvel and Disney's best interests to have those properties in their camp. Disney bought Marvel for what? $4 billion. Marvel's value is clearly way higher. I'm not saying drop $1 billion on the Fantastic Four IP and all those characters, but offer a lot to get all of that back. You get all that back and you can expand Marvel Cinematic Universe for vast reaches for years. Getting Silver Surfer and Galactus back would be huge. Also, just to have characters like Kang to play around with for Avengers sequels would also be huge.

Iger got bigger worries, such as finding his successor or extending his contract. He also needs to worry about ESPN's declining subscription base, BAM investment and other M&A opportunities. Disney has been linked to buying giants such as Netflix, Warner Brothers, EA, Twitter, etc. FF, XMen IP movie rights acquisition is something that Iger would only get involved later on, after someone else got the convo started. Perlmutter is more worried about being part of Trump's administration and he wouldn't get involved with MS right now anyways.

How about this for a trade

MARVEL gets all bad guys & supporting F4 characters

FOX can crossover the F4 with X-Men

Problem solved

:woot:

Horrible trade for Marvel, but Marvel has been known for horrible trades, even recently with Spiderman.

And now Fox's hand just got weaker.

The simple fact that Spider-Man is the most valuable merchandising character in comics made him worth doing a deal. Well received Spider-Man films means more merchandise sold, and that all goes into Marvel's pocket.

Iger wants to be Trump's advisor as well ;) . Anyway, I know they got a lot of other deals on their plate, I'm just saying what I would want to do if I was in such a position.

& look at how that turned out for MARVEL they sold their soul to the devil (Tom Rothman) instead of just waiting & they'd get the rights back after Sony sells off the movie division I think MARVEL learned about jumping the gun to soon there

I don't think the deal has worked out too badly. The film division hasn't been sold off yet. Marvel got to use Spider-Man and still controls all his merchandising and TV rights.

Time will tell how people like things like the High School cast though cause yikes but thats easily fixable in sequels at least so theres that
Good points but as you said, fixable in a sequel.

Simple matter of having Peter & Aunt May move to another part of New York therefore a new side cast

I might actually like that, to be honest. Not a fan of Ganke, Michelle, or Flash "I'm a rich snob, Thompson. Laura Harrier is playing Liz, which I like but she's already 26.

I'd only be upset about Angourie Rice, but if she's not Gwen I wouldn't care.

Also; what would you guys rather see? Thing vs Hulk or Thing vs Drax? Obviously Thing vs Hulk is more iconic but Thing fighting Drax would be just as awesome.

Thompson is the only question mark for me at this time, but I'll give the concept a shot.

Like with anything. I just don't see any evidence it would need to be at this point.

Quite a few people in the Homecoming board are already complaining about the supporting cast and the changes they've made to characters.

Obviously a little too soon to tell, but it's not outrageous.

I'm aware, but I'm going on the judgment of the studios track record so far over some fans on a board after one trailer... Time will tell. I'm optimistic.

A lot of the supporting cast has been hit or miss for me so far though.

Thor? How many people complained about Darcy, Jane and Darcy's "intern" in The Dark World?

Ant-Man? T.I. and Kurt didn't do much for me either.

I'd agree and say I highly doubt it'll result in "Peter moves and goes to a different school now."

You can't have Hulk and Thing in the same movie for the first time and not let them have a little scuffle.

I think those characters are harmless. Darcy was annoying but the Ant-Man guys are fine. Actually liked by many. We'll see about Homecoming, but other then Thompson's incarnation, nothing worries me - as of yet. I take a lot of the complaints with a grain of salt at this point. I may agree when we see more, but I'm not ready to jump the gun just yet. I want the film to be great so am remaining hopeful....

I agree that they were fine, but I wouldn't be heartbroken if neither of them come back for the sequel. If they do? Fine, that's great.

Just overall didn't like them a ton. Kurt had a few good lines though.

To get a little bit back on topic, Marvel did upload another 101 video and it was Crystal. The Inhuman.

I'm basically the same. I liked them more then you, but either way it's more seasoning then anything.

Which technically does prove the idea that MARVEL is bad with side characters

14 movies in and we have grumbles about a few in Thor and a couple from Ant-Man...and that's proof they are bad with side characters?

Seems these are exceptions rather than the rule, imo.

I'd say that's the case, but I can also see why people have their doubts about the side characters in Homecoming.

The only ones I'm looking forward to are Liz and Angourie Rice's character (Betty?)

Not to be an alarmist or anything, but "fixable in a sequel" was the mantra of the Fant4stic defenders. :cwink:

But, despite some general concerns, there's just about zero chance Homecoming will be as bad as Fant4stic.

Spider-man fans need only imagine for 30 seconds what it's like to be a Fantastic Four fan to know how good they've got it.

The most important thing is that they get Peter and Spiderman right. And I can honestly say for the first time it appears they got both right in Civil War. Even if its a sample size.

Im not sure whats goin on with the supporting characters but it sounds like they are merging some of them like they did in Spectacular Spiderman. When you are rebooting a series a third go around there has to be some changes to distance it from the first two.

But not to the point where they are unrecognisable. They seem to have just slapped classic character names on completely different characters, so that they are INO.

It's like now, if this were FF, Dr Doom is the mailman, Willie Lumpkin is the ruler of Latveria, Ben is a blind sculptress, Alicia Masters is an underground cave dweller with monsters, Sue Storm goes round completely naked except for green scaly speedos etc.

That last one I wouldn't object to. :o

the Flash casting is quite disconcerting
but the rest of the side characters seem fine, and the ones they're using aren't exactly what you'd call "iconic" outside of maybe Liz Allen and Betty
