I'm sure most know that I'm one of those people, I really didn't like the smaller S but I have to say, it looks great in the EW photo. It just works you know? Almost looks like it fits better.

It's obviously the exact same size as it's always been, but to me, it looks a tad bigger in that photo. I couldn't possibly tell you why.

I think I still prefer the MOS shield, though. Some might think it was too big, but honestly, I thought it was more or less the perfect size.

Don't forget WW! I love that costume. Respectful, but functional.

Oh yeah! Her costume is great too.

I've heard some people criticize it, calling it sexist and whatnot, but I disagree. It's supposed to be reminiscent of both Wonder Woman's traditional comic book suit and an Ancient Greek battleskirt, and it pulls both of those things off well. Now, if they would have went full comic book and had her running around in star-spangled undies... THEN I'd think those criticisms hold more weight.

That's really the trick. The goal of the costume designer isn't to make a design that just looks good for a "cosplay photo". The goal is to take it look good on camera. I'm betting they found the bigger S to be too much S while he was moving around.

Superman returns just had a small S. It was made even smaller due to how big Routh was and where the damn cape and collar were.

MOS they dropped that damn collar and cape back down. Seriously just doing that to the Returns suit would have made that S work a lot better. They made the S huge in terms of length, width, and the playing around with the proportions of the S. It has a huge center so when he's leaning backward or forward, the S is large and in charge.

Now for BVS they kept the width. This is why some folks are having difficulty telling the difference. This is important, this maintains this sense of scale. Now the height is shorter. I bet they felt the larger S from MOS was too damn large. They may have even had difficulty framing the shot due to it's size.

Looking at some screenshots, the S starts to kinda warp on his huge pecs. In other cases the S is so long that framing is a tad awkward.

So in BVS the S maintains it's width but sits on his pecs and not his pecs and abs. Then you got the benefits of lighting. You don't need to light his abs to light the S.

So potentially the larger 3D S is great for photos but not so great for video.

I think he was coming off of Con Air at the time. So, he didn't cut his hair yet.

That's possible, but his hair looks a LOT darker there than it normally does. Also, Superman had long hair when he returned from the dead in the early 90s, so it's possible that's why Cage's Superman might have had long hair.

Either way, it looks awful.

Well, there's the pic of him in the more finished suit and his hair was like how it normally was during those years. And you can see how it probably influenced the MOS design...

Ah yeah, I forgot about those pics. Still, he doesn't look anything like Superman. It just looks like Nic Cage in a Superman costume. Suit isn't terrible though.

I saw a poster related to the Death of Superman Lives doc, and I kid you not, I saw this thing in color, and those who made fan manips of it in the classic colors with the red trunks were RIGHT.

I wonder if that particular suit is shown, in a better way, during Jon Schnepp's documentary.

This review of the documentary has it in color...

It honestly looks better than what Singer came up with

So its actually confusing whether it is smaller or not. One thing is certain its vertically compressed like you said.

Even in the pic above its not like its huge compared to BvS. I think the correct answer is that the shield is more or less the same but it looks smaller because
-they have vertically compressed it
-moved it down
-he's so much buffer this time around, like literally the body is so big that in comparison the shield appears smaller

Honestly the jury is still out. We need more pictures and more direct side by side comparisons to say for sure.

can't see. it still has the classic belt and briefs. unlike MOS, left with a belt buckle only.
the similarities would be the fake abs, pecs & shoulders. all the fake muscles.

Difference is, Nic Cage was not built like that under the suit. Cavill was under his. MOS suit doesn't have fake muscles. It has Cavill's muscles molded and sculptured into the costume so that they don't lose definition and still show through the material of the costume. That will naturally make him look a bit bigger but it's still far from fake.

Now Brandon Routh on the other hand, had some really crappy fake shoulder muscles put into his costume (there's a video of it floating about) and no real muscles underneath making him look like a tall, lanky boy. :cwink:

And the only thing similar on Nic Cage's costume to MOS are the patterns on the lower hand above the wrist.

I like how Superman's chest emblem looks here, perhaps more so than MOS.

While not being the absolutely perfect comparison, the body angle is really close. I just made that regarding the shield, let's not compare colours or suit reflection because the light, saturation and exposure settings are completely different.

How funny is this photo..those girls are like..dayyum..
Btw, this is my favorite color of the suit

Thanks for the comparison. And blasphemy though it may sound, I think that the new shield is better. It just looks better as it has better proportions. Now the only thing I have reservations about is the square buckle. I really wish they had left it elliptical. But maybe I will come around to it after seeing more pictures. Afterall we haven't seen a lot from BvS yet.

Another thing. The only person to make Cavill look puny is himself. His BvS Supes is so much bigger than his MOS Supes, much thicker overall.

Yeah, I mean they did lighten the suit coloring so that effects his look as well (brings out the muscle definition), but his neck looks thicker, and he just looks like he put on a few more pounds of muscle for sure. He's the perfect Superman IMO!

(brings out the muscle definition),

The only thing that brings out the muscles is the light, not the colour (which I still believe is the very same, at least for the blue), unfortunately Amir Mokri wasn't able to do that in MoS
