It's not like the old design no longer works. Though I'd argue many of you are looking at the artist depiction and not the design. Put those designs through the new52 and they would look just as awesome.

I don't understand what you mean. The classic design "put through the New 52" is the Nehru-collared, over-seemed, princess-sleeved nightmare we have just discussed.

Ugh the new suit design is better than the last one but that ain't saying much. Seriously why don't they just copy the man of steel suit? It actually looks good in real life and on paper. Observe:

Kind of ironic that Jim Lee drew these.

It's certainly better, but I think the contrast between the cuffs, stripes and the rest of the fabric is too strong.

I never got why the cuffs/ stripes are always silver/ gray in artworks when it's clearly blue on the actual suit.

I think to covey the reflection? May be a bit strong but the suit looks good for comic use.

They should use the BvS suit then. The tubing is a lot less pronounced.

Here's one with a different art style and the contrast is less pronounced. Looks really good IMHO and I think it goes to show that the Man of Steel suit is the best redesign in 75+ years.

Yeah, a lot of artists go overboard in the contrast between the cuffs/details and the main suit, the cuffs are a very similar color but with a more metallic shine.

That picture shows just how perfect the MOS design is for print. As long as the cuffs and piping are blue and not silver, it looks perfect. It breaks up the blue suit perfectly and shows that the trunks are not necessary.

This is what we should have gotten in Superman # 38.

I want this so bad for comics its ridiculous! sigh...

It's hilarious that this supposedly "outdated" design still kicks the **** out these super-kewl contemporary designs.

**** off, DC. :funny:

^ This. While I dig the updated New-52 suit (more form-fitting suit, less armor), the pre New-52 suit is still King and the ideal Superman look for myself and I think a lot of other people. That's saying something.

The comics should adopt the movie suit IMO

The problem with the newgen is that they too often fail to realize that there were those of the oldgen who were simply better than they and who got a good many things right the first time.

These!

I do not mind the changes made for the movie, however for comics the classic suit from Silver and Bronze age is superior to those that came after. I dislike the trend of Nehru/Mandarin collar and the useless red belt in 52 comics unlike Batman's belt which is functional. Superman's suit should not be functional and be armorless, it should be as much of use as an Olympic power lifter with their onesie.

Superman's cape is also useless, unlike Batman's cape which is functional.

His suit should be strong like armor, or it should be self-repairing. If he's flying through explosions and being shot with machine guns on a regular basis then a regular fabric suit would be instantly destroyed and he'd be nude most of the time.

Superman's cape has been shown to be functional and useful on several occasions.

Batman's suit is geared toward being functional, be his cape, belt, climbing gears and batmobile.

At least in the comics for most of DC's history, Superman's suit is never functional, including his cape, boot and in some case his belt & trunk. Superman wear his suit mainly for the aesthetic form of beauty. His suit being armor-like is beside the point - the aesthetic is still ugly with all these lines. His suit can still be made of armor-like materials/self-replicating materials. It is how he was drawn in the comics over the last two decades, and I'm looking at these through eyes of artist that I used to be. The golden rule in comics is to keep it simple and not overly complicated with neck collar, armor, belt etc.

(Just to be clear we're discussing suit from comics not movie.)

I don't think this matters much. The cape completes the aesthetic. There's many things that 'don't make sense' with Superman but that doesn't really matter either in my opinion. Like his secret identity being a pair of glasses or his instant suit changes which includes boots and everything, etc.

The MOS suit is perfection IMO, say what you will about the film but Cavill and his suit were spot on!

As for superman's suit well it's always been more about symbolism than function, because in most incarnations (the Byrne's reboot excluded) the suit was made from kryptonian material and is inspired by kryptonian design and it serves as a reminder of kal's heritage, his birthright if you will.

In the new 52, Grant Morrison made superman's cape indestructible as it acts like a ''safety blanket" protecting him from harm.

The mos suit can work in comics, but not the one Jim Lee drew. Man does it look ugly.
