The Dark Knight Rises The TDKR General Discussion & Speculation Thread (NOT A LOUNGE)

The 3 seconds of him atop a burning pile of money was enough for me.

Implying violence gets the point across sometimes more than showing it.

Typically I agree, and in the case of Lau I definitely agree, but with the case of Gambol, I don't agree. I thought that was executed quite poorly.

If Joker had the knife against his throat that would have been one thing but it was just his cheek. Not even a scream? Not even a noise when he's on the ground? No clawing at Joker? He just falls like a sack of potatoes

Oh wow, I hope NY & Philly get the same treatment, I'm going to be snapping photos of everything.

Why does it feel like the Dark Knight had so much more hype and buzz? Around this time, people were already starting to go crazy over the film. I don't know... just a feeling I have. Anyone agree?

If it stays the same in June, only then will it become a genuine cause for worry. My guess is that WB's marketing strategy this time around is rather than go for a slow and gradual build-up, they'll go completely guns blazing in the 3-4 weeks prior to release. Remember, Avatar's marketing push also kicked into high gear quite late but when it finally did, there was hardly talk of anything else by that point.

Yeah, the Gamble death was a really cheap. I actually think Harvey's death was a bit ambiguous - until they showed the funeral scene a few moments afterwards.

Nope. :)

Because we're in a news drought as of right now. You should have seen this place when we got the trailer and prologue. So many crashes...

You should have seen this place in TDK days. Just a new picture would crash the boards. I would have to flip to the Jow Boards or BOF whenever it happened, because it happened a LOT.

Well the boards did crash when the first official pics of Bane & Selina Kyle and the Empire magazine were released and posted online.

The recent pics have been CGI renderings and standee promos.

Simple HQ versions of the Bane render with his arms crossed and CW with the gun would tide me over for a couple weeks. But no.....:csad:

This one I agree with, it always bothered me that gambol just dies instantly with a slash to the mouth.

Because it was the first time a film had that unbeatable level of interactive advertising.

Also, the Joker is a big pull; he's like Wolverine in that, when most people think "X-Men," they think of Wolverine. It's the same with the Joker. Now Bane might make for an incredible villain, but he doesn't have a reputation that spans all incarnations of Batman stories. Plus, his look in the film doesn't look very much like his previous appearances. This is one if the reasons I think they chose Catwoman - she's almost as iconic as Batman and Joker.

But I think it's mostly due to my first point. The virals were exciting and new to fans. It's just not the same. And it probably never will be. I think it's only a matter of time before word spreads from the previews that it's a film that's on the same level (better, actually, from what I've heard,) than The Dark Knight. And when that happens, it's going to be huge.

I just tell myself he went into shock. Then, maybe he suffered a heart attack from it. It works for me.

Who have you heard this from?!?

Oh please don't tell me that.

If we saw, or heard, Lau being burned to death, that would have almost certainly constituted an R-Rating. Who knows, maybe there was footage of him burning and screaming but it was removed to fall into a PG-13.

Yeah they filmed it with Lau burning on top of the pile with the rest of the money. You could see a dummy stand-in burning, but in the final film they dont show it. This is one of those cases were Nolan played it way too safe. If Star Wars Revenge of the Sith could show Anikan get his legs and arms chopped off and then burned alive Nolan could have gotten away with Lau burning on screen for a few seconds. We don't even here him scream and we know he is conscious at the time cause Joker throws a stack of bills at his head and hits him and Lau reacts in pain. If Lau is bound and gagged then showing him burning for a few seconds was needed. Its not abput satisfying a blood lust. Lau plays a somewhat significant role in the film and the joker works hard to kill him. Then they cut around his death to imply violence. Sometimes implied violence works but in this case with so much going on it just went unnoticed for some. Having filmed him burning and having filmed wide shots for Nolan to then use the close shots and omit Lau burning feels like a bid to play it safer than necessary. It was just sloppy like Gambles death. Just my opinion on the matter, and another reason why I don't like TDK as much as I would like too.

Everybody was hyped for "Begins" because they wanted to check out the new take on Batman. Then everybody was hyped for "TDK" to check out the new Joker.

I don't think many people realize what's going on with this new movie. Nobody is familiar with Bane (he wasn't even called "Bane" in the trailers) and I'm pretty positive nobody even realizes that Catwoman is in this. I blame marketing.

^ The whole first trailer was an introduction to Bane. You don't need to know his name, just what he's capable of, and I think they did a great job of showing it.

Yeah, the BR Blu ray extras show you how it was done, really trippy.

I'm sure there will also be a cool 45 minute featurette on the entire Lau storyline on the 6 Disc Box set released next year.

Lau was important for 20 minutes, Then the Joker became more and more important.

He burned him alive on top of money, I spotted it the first run-through, but with Nolan's fast scenes, it could easily be missed.

Yeah, to this day I'm fairly certainatleast half of the people who watched the Dark Knight multiple times still didn't catch Dent taking out Marones henchman before he can get in the car. Blink and you'll miss it.

The same goes for Joker stabbing Gamble's men in that "How about...alive?"-moment.

Yea he stabs the two guys in the gut to help him push up off the snooker table.

Here's something funny: me and some other students gathered together in a small auditorium in our university to watch a film. A friend of mine who is a huge Batman fan played the TDKR trailer before we started watching. Then, another friend, a girl who's not particularly a fan, but does watch movies quite often, didn't realize it was a trailer for the new Batman film until she saw him and Bane punching each other on the stairs near the end of the trailer... :D She was like, "Oh, Batman?! There's a new Batman coming out?"

Gambol's death annoyed me, as well. It was a non-issue to imply and not show his death in a statisfactory way. The worst thing in that scene, however, was Joker saying "How about alive?". He told you the other day, idiot, "500.000 dead, a million alive, to teach him some manners"!

I didn't mind Lau's death.

Okay...

I've seen TDK probably about 50 times...

And I just had to dig out my DVD and play the film once more to check that out. I NEVER saw that before!

Well there ya go.

I've watch The Dark Knight multiple times and have never noticed that !

And you call yourself Ultra Nolanite?!? :wow:
