@Jedm1991

No, DVD quality sucks - it would be straight to Blu-Ray :oldrazz:. That would be my first change from Nolan's films (and almost every other film for that matter)

Another problem was Joker just lightly caressing the two men who brought him in and them dissapearing from the scene. I guess he stabbed them but it was so sloppily done. Also, what happened to his other knife? One shot he has two knives seemingly knifing the two dudes at his flank and the next he has one knife on Spawn. What happened to the other knife? Was it stuck on the crotch of one of the dudes?

At first I attributed these problems to editing, now I think this scene is just badly directed.

Yeah, I always just assumed he gutted the two guys in the side as he sat up, left the knives in them, then produced a third knife from his sleeve.

To me it's a good directing choice because the "trickiness" of how its filmed totally fits Joker's character. Quick, violent, unexpected...all within a pg-13. I think it's cool because it's the type of thing that hits you with a delayed reaction. Like, "Did he just?...oh ****!!"

Just a matter of taste imo. Nolan consistently does these types of things, so I tend to think it's because he wants it that way, not because he doesn't get enough coverage or something like that. Hence the whole "you have to pedal faster" comment that WB exec made in response to the Bane voice fiasco.

I see that the chase sequence in the dark knight is brought up as bad directing. I'm guessing people are getting it from that film critic article where he dissects the scene. A director named Joseph kahn actually wrote a rebuttal to that article. Its a great read and since most of you seem bored you should take a look.

nice article. this excerpt: "However, there is a point where criticism is so flawed and the author is pontificating on an area that is so out of his area of expertise, he is basically talking out of his ass." reminds me of exelsior and other posters in the forum.

Exacly, very few actually participate in critical reading. They read that guys article and repeat what he said as if its fact. Because you see it on this forum repeated as if that scene was shot incompetently.

Riiiight. And if I made a detailed obsevation of something favorable and positive about the film my "level of expertise" would be never be questioned. On the contrary, I would probably get many thumbs up.

Haha, this won't get deleted!

Couldn't care less about the so called inconstancies in the TDK chase-scene – I just love it!
And honestly I didn't know of these things until I saw it on the internet, when I watch the movie I'm usually so immersed and into it that things like that totally pass my mind and I think that for me that is great filmmaking too.

I guess it's easier to point out and be irritated by these faults if you're not a huge fan of the movie though.

I love the chase in TDK up until the Batpod shows up. After that I have a couple gripes that I've had since day one. The editing is not smooth particularly when Batman is going through the mall and the alleyway. The reused music is also sloppy in the way it plays for about 10 seconds then cuts out. I feel the chase in BB was much stronger. That is just personal opinion, tho.

I tend to be the most critical of a film's editing. Whether it be the whole movie or just the editing of a scene I tend to be particular about it. I'm no expert, but I have a love for the art of editing, and have dipped my toes in the water quite a bit in the past so its always the aspect of a film I'm most critical of. I don't have the expertise to say whether TDK's editing in that scene is bad, but I can say that it isn't my taste.

@Marvolo

I didn't notice any music in the chase scene, unless you mean Joker's one-note theme.

Bingo!

I think this is the case for most people, it's until they get to the internet and start examining every microsecond of a film do they find these issues but, within that they're purposely keeping themselves from being immersed in the film.

Nolan set up an intriguing chase, not just for what happens but because of how it got there and the implications of what will happen to the story when it's over. That's not common in a lot of films.

@Marvolo

I didn't notice any music in the chase scene, unless you mean Joker's one-note theme.

The music starts when the Batpod bursts out of the tumbler up to when the Batpod blows past that guy setting in his car and tears his sideview mirror off then the music abruptly cuts off as the Batpod tears the mirror off. It always seemed strange to me that the music didn't continue up until the end of the chase. The scene would have benefited from some new music , actually, but Hans Zimmer didn't feel so I guess. I don't know the name of the music, but it plays in the BB chase too.

Its awesome to think that in less than a month we will get an awesome movie (the Avengers), and the beginning of what should be a killer marketing campaign for another awesome film (TDKR). May and June should be fun times.

I never said that so don't put words in my mouth.
Who said you said that? It's a tried and true reality of these boards.

The point is if you say you like something, that's fine; if you say you don't like something, that's fine too (those are examples of simply stating your preference).
And that's what I did.

But to speak like you know what you're talking about, like you have some sort of expertise in cinema (possibly even implying that you would know how to do a better job than Nolan)... that would require that you actually have that expertise, but quite obviously you don't. Just give up now

Speaking of putting words in mouths. When did I imply I would do better than Nolan? Criticism is deconstructing a scene, not proposing better alternatives.

I think The Avengers will be good but not as good as Ironman and now that i think about it i really want to see a trailer for TDKR or TASM with it

Thank you, I totally forgot about that. :up:

Actually, I feel the opposite and took something else from that scene. One of the things I really liked about this chase scene was the absence of music. This absence of music made it feel more tense in my eyes. The music that started when the Batpod bursts out, when the SWAT helicopter appears, etc. informs me that a new change has developed during the operation e.g. Batman getting a new toy and the SWAT getting some backup. During the really tense moments of the chase, I think the absence of music was intentional. That's how I saw this.

Just a couple of more weeks until cinema con where Nolan will hopefully premiere the third trailer. Then it goes world wide with avengers in may 4th in theaters. Then it will be online by may 7th

As soon as The Avengers is released I think we can expect the marketing for TDKR to go into overdrive.

:up:

The drought is almost over ladies and gentlemen.

Hold on to your butts...
