The Dark Knight Rises The TDKR General Discussion & Speculation Thread - - - - - - - - Part 50

It's the third Nolan-helmed Batman movie.

'Nuff said.

I think a 'lack of marketing' speaks more to Bat-fans wanting more cool stuff to hold them over, which is understandable. But I honestly can't see the movie not being successful unless nobody knows when it's actually opening.

Only my opinion here but I am completely ok with a sparse marketing campaign. All I really need is a teaser, a trailer and a handful of official stills to get me excited.... as long as they are engaging and interesting. I haven't seen anything yet officially released for TDKR that has me excited because of the movie itself. I'll admit that 90% of my excitement comes from the fact it's Nolan's last movie.

If we're so desperate for news/marketing, why not just ask for the whole movie to be released now?!?

I WANT TDKR TO BE RELEASED NEXT WEEKEND DAMMIT

We've all been fooled by good marketing ploys, though. Green Lantern was one of the few properties that the horrendous quality of the marketing was on par with the horrendous quality of the film itself. How would I have marketed it, knowing full well that it was a horrible movie? Easy:

Fighter planes, fist fights, deep space with only mild (MILD hits at aliens and the suit). Make people work for it.

And I do know a handful of people who asked for their money back during GL

You see, I don't get this. GL was marketed heavily/very well, but WOM killed it. The amount of tie-ins and what not for it was on par with TDK. WB was utilizing the same exact strategy/pacing that TDK had in the few months before its release (minus intense virals); its just that the film wasn't good enough or interesting enough to draw people in, with the bad reviews and WOM putting the nail in the coffin. Sure it gave away all the juicy stuff with its clips/trailers/tv spots, but so did TDK the month before it was out. It's marketing/advertising was in no way poor.

People need to chill, the advertising will come when it comes.

Hey.....

TOYS!!!!!!!!!!!!

RIM posted those in the Merch thread

These are horrendous. I can't tell if they're from NECA or Funko but I saw them at Spencer Gift last week and cringed

Actually, in retrospect GL was over advertised.

Totally agreed, and if it doesn't pick up, it's definitely cause for concern.

If we get absolutely NOTHING until May 4th (Final Trailer with The Avengers), we should be concerned, guys. Come on now.

Either WB doesn't want to oversaturate this movie, or they have no idea the juggernaut they have on their hands. It's going to be a monster, and I'd for its success to be dwindled by its butt-head marketing department. This movie deserves its poster chiseled on the surface of the moon so we can see it at night.

Why is it a concern? This franchise trumps all others by default, marketing or no marketing at this point. Why spend that money and resources if you don't have to? Posters, trailers, etc...they'll be there when they have to just like any other movie...difference being that this isn't just any other movie, and people will know that already without having to shove it down their throats.

The Avengers? Really? Have you seen how silly that looks already? It's like being concerned over the next Smurf movie in comparison. Batman is doing, and will do, just fine on its merits alone as a film and franchise.

Alright everyone... Chill.

:funny:

I don't know if you are being serious or just making fun of everyone else here.

There is a big difference between marketing something very well and marketing it heavily. Big difference. Huge. GL was the later.

The negative reviews didn't come out until the week of release; the week OF release. Midnight screening tickets should have been sold out by then, they are for almost every other summer movie. No, GL was just marketed poorly utilizing the more is better approach.

I can live with some stills every few weeks until they go on promo overdrive starting with the trailer in May.

I don't see any harm in releasing some stills even if it's just the character standing and looking all pretty. At least we can dissect it by debating on why the background is this or that color and why the character's hair is messy or not. :D

You know what would be funny?

They announce the new trailer coming out with one week's notice. The boards shout in excitement.

But to our dismay, trailer 3 is only a recut of footage from the first 2 trailers and the prologue/sizzle reel.

I really want to see SHH boards' reactions after that happens.

If that happened, I would murder everybody's accounts here.

If we're so desperate for news/marketing, why not just ask for the whole movie to be released now?!?

That's pretty stupid. I'm just asking for a few movie stills.

:hehe:

I'm sure we're close to getting them... soon. :oldrazz:

On a serious note, I'm predicting we get the stills on the first week of April.

But... but that's what someone said about March, and look what happened :(. Sorry for acting like a kid :oldrazz:.

Reading half the poster's concerns and insecurity for marketing and other half consoling them is why I frequent the TDKR threads over the Avengers and ASM threads.

This is why TDKR >> ASM + Avengers

Actually, in retrospect GL was over advertised.

Very true. It was being crammed down our throats the month before its release. The build up was good, but then it became too much, at which point I, and certainly others, became concerned.

Seriously, the more I saw of it the more I didn't want to see it. They tried so hard to make Ryan Reynolds happen and...no.

Put it this way......some musical artist may have to release posters, videos, virals, youtube chronicles, radio appearances, etc. to market their upcoming album.

On the other hand, the advertisement for a new U2 album simply has a black square with a white 'U2' in it, the album title, and an arrival date.

Understatement works best when you've earned the success to take advantage of it.

It was obvious that they were desperate for the film to sell, the message became less about 'you'll have an awesome time watching this' and more to 'please, please, please see this movie, we've put a lot of money into it.

Can I ask you..why do you care about this crap so much? Do you work for WB? Do you work close to Nolan? Does this affect you in any way??

I could honestly care less about how much money TDKR makes, if it does well or not commercially, how well WB are doing with the marketing. Sorry but i just wanna see this movie July 20th at midnight with my buds. See it a few more times before its theater run ends. And that's it until i await the Blu-Ray or boxset.

We're getting the final trailer in May, im friggin excited for that. We're gonna have some stills by then plus countless tv spots going into July..that i may or may not avoid. IT'S ALL GOOD. I dont get why you and some others post countless panic induced things about how much of a disaster it is. ITS COMING OUT PEOPLE. Just sit there, enjoy some pics and a trailer as it comes. If you get anything else, then be happy. Go get ur tickets and stop whining lol.

If you want to look at bad marketing for a WB release, look no further than Dark Shadows. Couple of pictures and a trailer just released...and the film opens in the second weekend of May.

Some are crediting the lack of viral marketing this time around to there being no advertising. If we look at the timeline for the main GP advertising for TDK then Rises is following it nicely.

No offense to Batman fans but U2 is a much more worldwide recognizable name than Chris Nolan.

And U2 has come out with some crappy albums.

If I were to solely base my excitement for this film on the promotional items I'd wait for it to hit Netflix

But... but that's what someone said about March, and look what happened :(. Sorry for acting like a kid :oldrazz:.

Well, Rags did say we were suppose to receive something a week ago. I assume, via that intel, we are immensely close to the stills.

Naw, no reason to apologize. We're all like that. :woot:

Oh my god. I just realized how much of a hell hole Aprils Fools is going to be this year on the boards.:csad:
