The Dark Knight Rises The TDKR General Discussion & Speculation Thread - - - - - - - - Part 50

Just put up the Bat-symbol, and hopefully people will understand it's the next installment of one of the all-time most successful franchises. Just letting people know the movie is coming should be plenty by now, because they'll see it it droves.

I don't think the GP are loyal to any brand. They won't show up at the theater just because it's Batman. You have to entice them with appealing footage. There are exceptions though, like Harry Potter. And WB is making a big mistake marketing Rises like the last Potter film. A mistake they will regret because Batman just doesnt have the very rare, expansive, rabid following like Potter. It's fangeeks are far fewer in numbers.

IMO there are two things that appeal to the braindead GP: action/-explosions and showy, colorful characters. Batman isn't a showy character. He is the brooding, quiet anchor to the franchise. You DO NOT sell his character arc and expect to put asses in seats. Most moviegoers don't care about that. They care about cool one liners and explosions. Something every frame of footage we've seen from Rises lacks; something that was in TDK's trailer in spades. Something the Avengers trailers haven't failed in delivering: stuff getting blown up, RDJ's scenery chewing one liners, a villain with CLEAR motivations. Since Bane is far down the foodchain, WB does the only sensible thing possible, features him as vaguely as possible. Why let the GP be acquainted with the new villain? Finally, there is Catwoman, the only recognizable villain in the movie, a colorful character with one liner potential in her own right, and what do they do? Show as little of her as possible. It's like they brought back the marketing guys from Begins.

Oh my god. I just realized how much of a hell hole Aprils Fools is going to be this year on the boards.:csad:

I was tossing up the idea of making a Catwoman manip that looks like Nolan's Catwoman to screw with people. :hehe:

I can live with some stills every few weeks until they go on promo overdrive starting with the trailer in May.

I don't see any harm in releasing some stills even if it's just the character standing and looking all pretty. At least we can dissect it by debating on why the background is this or that color and why the character's hair is messy or not. :D

Exactly. I just want one still of something that's not spoilery, like Bruce in a suit. Heck, I'd be happy even if they released high-res stills of the trailer clips/sizzle reel. Just a few of those.

Well, Rags did say we were suppose to receive something a week ago. I assume, via that intel, we are immensely close to the stills.

Naw, no reason to apologize. We're all like that. :woot:

Ah, I see. Well, that does make me a bit excited . If you see my posts, mosts of them include complaining about lack of stills :woot:.

Oh my god. I just realized how much of a hell hole Aprils Fools is going to be this year on the boards.:csad:

I'll be busy enjoying the most trolliest TV show I've ever seen - but I'll enjoy this board too on that day. :awesome:

Doesn't make sense to start yet. Not while other films are duking it out. Let Hungry Games make its money and let Avengers solidify itself, once that's done. TDKR will be marketing itself nearly alone. Though Avengers will still be around it'll just be superficial stuff not convincing stuff and TASM will be competition but not all that much.

Fighting out with 4 or 5 films won't work. Just a little longer. Spider-Man fans should be the most concerned, talk has tapered off a bit and the longer TDKR takes to promote the better the chance TDKR will be over aggressive and dominate july as a whole

^This. I completely agree with. Especially the bit about TAS.

Yeah I'm used to Funko's style. My sister might get Catwoman because it's soooooo cute. :whatever:

I posted the Pop! figures in the merch thread. Those I'll buy but only because I collect em :yay:

Rashad, Rocketman and Solidsnake should all post at the same time. It would look fantastic and... confusing. :D

It's not brand 'loyalty'...it's movie popularity, and Batman is still atop the wave of an all-time high without a single word or picture of it in sight at the moment.

Just as a movie, comic-awareness or not, it's fine. The fact that there isn't as much material out there for Batfans as there are for those of other characters is another issue with little to no bearing on its cinematic/box-office prospects at this point.

It doesn't need virals and so on like others. Situationally it's not Begins any more, either. It's the third Batman movie in this very special era. That says all that really needs to be said to ensure it as a blockbuster.

That should be one of the April Fool pranks. It would be awesome.

No offense to Batman fans but U2 is a much more worldwide recognizable name than Chris Nolan.
And these Batman films are uber-popular with or without knowing the director's name. That's the point. U2's studio engineers aren't the name that sells their albums.

And U2 has come out with some crappy albums.
TDKR could end up being a crappy movie...but it will still get a huge opening...because it's the third Batman film.

If I were to solely base my excitement for this film on the promotional items I'd wait for it to hit Netflix
If you didn't look at is as a comparison between you and other comic fans getting more advanced cereal prizes than the other or what have you, you may feel differently...like most moviegoers who will flock to the theaters when it opens. :woot:

Marketing for this film has already been done by the success of its predecessors, for all intents and purposes. It's up to the film itself, which opens when it opens.

TDKR will make a ton of money with or without great marketing. Nolan will go on to make projects he loves and we will in turn love, and Batman will enjoy enough prosperity to have the next project be done with the same amount of respect. This was made certain the minute TDK became the biggest movie ever.

The only reasons people here should be concerned with how much money this makes, is if you have shares in Time Warner or you have some stupid thing about bragging rights and having this film "beat" other films. As if we on this board haven't had bragging rights for four years already, if such a thing even matters (which it doesn't) I can understand why Avengers or TASM fans care about such a thing, they have sequels to worry about, we don't. So again, why are we so concerned about marketing this time round?

Hey.....

Are they...today...trying to establish a new Batman franchise with a different take and get away from the Clooney-fiasco association? If not, then misgivings over the 'Begins approach' don't factor the same since its not working with the same situation. 'Understatement' back then doesn't work the same way it would now.

Is TDKR really suffering by not flooding the advertising landscape like....every other thing that actually does have to overcompensate?

So because none of the footage or images have gotten me excited it's automatically The Avengers or Amazing Spider-Man's fault?

C'mon man, be real. It's because none of the footage or images for this movie has gotten me excited. Simple as that. I doubt I'm the only one quizzically underwhelmed by their marketing to date.

I couldn't care less how much it makes at the BO and unless you're making money off this flick you shouldn't either.

Hahaha... I've been getting them mixed up too due to their avys. :woot:

I hope April contains hype and other stuff in preparation for a possible May trailer.

....'fault'....for.....?

Just because you and a relatively few others (in the grand scheme of things) can't get excited enough by the fact that another Batman movie is coming out with or without extra pre-released material doesn't mean that they need to compensate for you, when the vast majority of moviegoers (and including possibly you and the few who feel similarly) will very likely still crowd to theaters for it. Frankly, it's more your cross to bear than theirs, because they've a much better hand at this juncture. 'Real' indeed.

Your 'excitement' isn't the prerogative of the people who invest and distribute this picture and its marketing (or lack thereof), if their bottom-line looks to be in good prospects. So...tough, I guess. This isn't a service.

I couldn't care less how much it makes at the BO and unless you're making money off this flick you shouldn't either.
I guess this makes it mutual, then. :O
