Agreed. It's as if that moment has to be earned and that we need to go on a journey with Michelle before we can accept her as MJ, and then a further journey before we can accept her as Mary Jane.

It's like the Arrow TV series. Instead of being called Green Arrow from the start, he had to go through the Hood, then the Arrow, and finally add the "Green" bit in front of his name so that it would feel earned.

Well maybe in the sequel, MJ decides to add the "Mary" bit, and then in the next sequel we get the "Jane" bit. Just in case those names don't feel earned and she's arrived at them too soon.

Movies use assumed titles, assumed character names etc. all the time to avoid early speculation and leaks. Especially as they seemingly wanted this to be a surprise.

Doesn't mean she was ever going to be called "Michelle" in the movie any more than The Dark Knight was ever going to actually be titled "Rory's First Kiss".

She may go by Michelle--that would suck IMO but we have nothing but baseless speculation to go off of for now.

That video bothers me so much especially when Watts flat out calls her Michelle. Like there isn't some hidden agenda or whatever on his face, but the way these Internet rumor mills go they make it out like it's a Khan/Blofeld/Darth Vader is Luke's father twist.

Hence why I still feel a lot of the speculation is B.S. however I do think multiple drafts were written and I do feel Tony was originally was suppose to play Manuel before settling on Flash. So, depending on if they last minute decide that "Michelle" was a ruse and she is indeed MJ or a new form of MJ, I think I and many are going to be more pissed than shocked because of the level of deceitfulness not only by Sony and Marvel but Watts and everyone involved.

This is why I feel if this whole thing is not settled by September or October then Marvel has two options: a) keep her as Michelle and save MJ for later or b) rewrite scenes that we've seen ala set photos and make her fully MJ meaning she has red hair from the start and looks and sounds like MJ otherwise they're walking themselves into a bear trap.

besides, the big "surprise" is already spoiled. so even if you did want to keep it as a big reveal in the film, it's not going to have the same effect. and going to such great lengths to hide the truth, both in marketing and in the film itself, could across as just plain silly.

the original "reveal" of MJ worked in 616 and SSM because she was an off screen character, only heard about but never seen.

God, that is so annoying! Just spell the name right! Reminds me of the bonus disc from the old Spider-Man DVD from right after it released. There was a feature called "The Many Loves of Spider-Man" and they spelled it Betty Brandt on there too! Still haven't corrected it on the trilogy Blu Ray set. smh.

Welp, here's the options they have:

1. Ignore the controversy and go with it anyway. Sony would care because they're in a desperate state, but Marvel clearly don't.
   
2. Do re-shoots to change Zendaya back to being Michele as opposed to Mary Jane, while getting a new actress for Mary Jane.
   
3. Cut any and all of Mary Jane being in the film, leaving only Michele.

4. Don't sweat it, because Z wasn't playing Mary Jane in the first place.
