I've always said, even while admitting that the first Thor film is my favorite to watch, it's the cheapest looking of the Phase One films. It's the film Marvel had to get through and not embarrass themselves.
For them, Thor was almost an Incredible Hulk situation; i.e., "just get through it to introduce Thor and Loki. If it doesn't make any money, at least we have Thor and Loki for the Avengers films, if needed."
They weren't banking on the fact that that cast that Branagh assembled literally carried that film just based on chemistry alone. That's why I've been most excited about the prospects of Thor, as a franchise.
Keep that cast and that amazing chemistry they have, change the aesthetics (Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones), give it a massive budget and a massive narrative and the potential of the Thor franchise is limitless.
The fantasy/swords and sandals genre is not looked down upon anymore, with what happened to Lord of the Rings. Add to that Gladiator and now Game of Thrones, hell even Hemsworth's Snow White and the Huntsman and you can get away with doing that with Thor.
And Alan Taylor and Marvel seem to have realized this with this sequel.
The Dark World is going to be lights out. I know everyone's excited for Iron Man 3 but when the dust settles, the Dark World is going to be the Phase Two film everyone keeps talking about.
Save this post. I will look like a prophet come next year when Winter Soldier hits and nobody's that excited because they haven't gotten over the awesomeness that is the Dark World.
