Thor: Ragnarok Box Office Prediction - Part 1

I guess enough links were provided??:o

Overall, JL will probably get about a 2.42 multiplier and T:R will be about 2.55. Given the size of the opening weekend, that translates into significantly better legs for T:R (movies with smaller openings generally have a higher multiplier). That .13 difference may not sound like a lot, but it translates into about 40M in box office receipts and that's a nice chunk of change in people's pockets.

Very nice. Waititi will definitely be able to do another Marvel studios movie, if he wants. At least I have to imagine that it is likely.

He has a distinctive style and comedic sensibility, yet it fits the Marvel universe very well at the same time.

Not sure if it will be another Thor movie, or something else. But probably something in phase 3.

IIRC, he said he didn't find the other characters very interesting. I liked T:R, but think he could have dialed back the humor somewhat, but, as others have said, that's what you get when you hire Taika. It's not like he's an unknown quantity.

I really do think Thor 4 will happen, if for nothing else, at least to expand more on the cosmic side. He is the best connective tissue between Avengers, Guardians and maybe even other groups who may make an entrance later in the game. :p

I think much like Iron Man, Cap and Thor will be stuck at 3 films :csad:

Thor is the only one of the main heroes I think they might give a 4th film to eventually.

Remember how Downey mentioned there was talk of Iron Man 4 when Civil War was pitched and eventually he decided to do Cap 3 as it told a better story than go for a stand alone Iron Man movie? I am sure the idea of Thor 4 is at least being thrown around Feige's conference rooms.

Oh, to be a fly on the wall in Feige's conference rooms :yay:

I agree the idea of Thor 4 has to be discussed, but I think other options will win out, as Thor:Ragnarok was really the ultimate Thor story, and anything else would be destined to be an anti-climactic cash in. Warner Brothers would certainly do it, but that just doesn't seem to be the MCU way, or I think we would have seen or heard plans for IM4 by now.

The success of T:R makes us want more Thor, and I think we'll get it in at least one Phase 4 movie, perhaps GotG3, DS2, or something else nobody outside of Feige's conference rooms has even thought about yet.

Agreed. There were preliminary talks for Taika coming back and doing another movie and he always said he wanted to return to the Thor world where he really felt like he belonged because he loved the characters/actors so much...

He has precisely the right kind of mind to be in a Marvel movie. His strengths are the character work, the humor, his own imagination... And he is willing to compromise and listen to what Marvel has to say regarding the confines of the world they built. In theory it's a match made in heaven.

And now he has hit a home-run with Thor Ragnarok, both critically and at the box office so he most likely has the studio's trust to come back and "work again" with them as Kevin Feige said a while back. Personally i hope he comes back either for another Thor film or some other project.

I tend to think that Thor may end up being to a phase 3 movie what Hulk was to this movie, or what Iron Man was to Cap 3.

That just seems to be the general tendency with the Marvel Studios films.

Cumberbatch, for example, is another really good actor, so I imagine that he will get to star in a sequel, but he may get some additional support next time.

As one can see with Civil War and Ragnarok, not being the title character doesn't mean that you are going to get short-changed at all. Hulk has a fantastic role in this movie. But anyway. We shall see.

Well. Whether they're discussing plans for a Ragnarok sequel or further uses of Thor in other franchises, I do hope they've at least got Taika lined up for FF4! That would be a dream match for me as well!

Even before the revelation that Ragnarok is, I thought Taika's style and sensibility would be perfect for that franchise!.. More so than the Thor, in fact. This is great opportunity to further Taika's involvement.. provided he is open to the FF4 franchise of course.
But in any case, more Taika the better, I'd say!!

Agreed. I don't want to short sell Hemsworth and his other films projects, but they are all rather poor or mediocre (same with the returns although Rush underperformed, it is a very good movie). He's still often the strongest part of those films (Huntsman...yuck). Hopefully '12 Strong' plays well.

Thor IV seems very realistic to continue to play into the fantasy/cosmic part of the MCU. It all depends on what's left and who is left after Infinity War plays out. I'd say the 2 flicks I'd really like to see post IW are a Thor sequel and seeing Doctor Strange 2 with a Baron Mordo showdown. Cumberbatch is too good to not have around for another flick and I know he's contracted for at least a sequel.

Even so, I don't imagine that he would want that to continue.

One thing about this movie is that it's a great star vehicle for him, almost more of a Hemsworth movie than a Thor movie.

So I would guess that he would prefer to land another big role on the basis of that. Which I think could easily happen. He gives a great performance, to the point that I think almost any franchise looking for a hero or leading man would consider him as a viable option.

Yes I hope things go up a notch in Dr strange 2 with magic no longer needing to be kntrdouced with kid gloves in the MCU.

$19.1 million to catch WW Guardians...

The OS number hasn't been updated yet this week. Boxofficemojo's Foreign number is the total after Sunday December 17th.

Domestically the weekend estimate is $814,000. Hard to tell what this really means because Christmas Eve fell on Sunday this year which hurts the weekend numbers compared to Doctor Strange, which had Christmas Day on Sunday instead.

So comparing to Doctor Strange's number now would be comparing apples and oranges.. it doesn't really tell us much.

The next set of weekdays should be good(all 4 weekdays should be bigger than the Sunday number) so let's see how that turns out.

It wont catch guardians2 best we can hope for is 850mill. Still an amazing movie saw it 4 times.
