Thor's box office competition - Part 1

Thor will be in 2nd place probably. With, I'll say...hopefully but not realistically...25 million.

I think $25 million next weekend is way too generous. But let's just say it managed to make that number . . . $200 million domestic would be all but guaranteed.

That's why I said it wasn't realistic haha. 15 to 20 million is what I really believe.

Hot damn! $34.5m, even if the estimate's off by a million or so, is still better than I'd even hoped for (I expected $28-29m, hoped for $31-32m). A 48% drop is great. Now I think it could probably manage another $16-19m next weekend against PotC (which should hit somewhere between $90m-110m), and it shouldn't have a problem hitting $175-185m domestically when all's said and done.

I definitely didn't expect Thor could equal Iron Man's popularity at all, but I did hope for over $150 million or a better performance than Incredible Hulk.

Doctor Jones, next weekend it will most likely have a steep dropoff as Pirates 4 will saturate the market. However, it will have a decent holdover the following weekend because of Memorial Day weekend when a lot of people and families will be going to the movies. By that time it will be over $150 million possibly $160 million.

I'm not convinced it can get to $200 million. I see $185 million being the topping off point though anything more would be great.

I forgot about the fact it's Memorial Day weekend. Hopefully more WOM gets out there. I know that could fade by Pirates and then the Hangover, but so far, thankfully, it's doing very well.

I hope Paramount really summons all this momentum together for Cap. Just push all the Marvel comics connections and like you know the Marvel movie saga continues and all that.

Plus I mean, we are all really happy about Bin Laden being dead . . . doesn't hurt to play up the Americanism . . . just saying. To me it's not that much of a coincidence that Bin Laden is dead and box office turned around a little bit.

Johnny Drama (the real one, not that fake hypster :oldrazz: ) said it best about this news.

I'm expecting a weekly total of 9 million this week with a weekend of 15 million. Abroad, maybe slightly higher...I'll go with 11 million weekly and 18 million weekend.

So my prediction for next Monday is about 397 million worldwide. I'm still not sure if it'll break 450 because the rest of it's run is going to be very competitive, with Big Blockbusters every week. I'd love to see it beat Clash of the Titans though.

Iron Man's performance was freaking amazing but I mean you got to give it to Thor because I mean c'mon its Thor. Iron Man had had cartoons before. I don't recall Thor ever having his own cartoon series.

Thor had his own cartoon back in the 60's.

Thor also guest starred in many pass Marvel cartoons, had his own many movie where he fought the Hulk, and also co-starred in both of the ULTIMATE AVENGERS movies and in the current AVENGERS:EMH cartoon.

Excellent news for Thor. I hope this bodes well for all the other superhero movies coming out this summer.

It would be disappointing if it doesn't brea the $400 million global BO of Superman Returns...

It'll be interesting to see what happens next weekend. I didn't even realize the new Pirates was coming out until today. For some reason I thought that was later this summer.

SMR only made $391 million. I know that is nitpicking, but it is worth noting, because the film had a colossal budget of $209 million after tax incentives, but not including marketing. Advertising was estimated to be in the neighborhood of $45.5 million. That puts SMR up to $254.5 million, versus $391 in revenue. That leaves room for $137 million, not including payouts for pay-or-play contracts (e.g. Tim Burton) and all of the money spent on the project during its time in development hell. The movie wasn't quite a flop, but it really was a sink hole for cash.

By comparison, Thor had a more reasonable budget of $150 million and is already at $344 million after two weeks on the market. Thor was also in development hell, but that bill was footed by different studios, not Marvel Studios. Even if the marketing bill is $40 million (which is unlikely) that would still put the money spent at $190 million, compared to $144 million after costs. Still, after only two weeks, where as the gross for SMR is the result of over a month on the market. There is no real reason to keep comparing Thor to all of these failed movies or under-performers (The Incredible Hulk).

Thor is easily going to surpass the worldwide take of Superman Returns. Domestic, probably not.

Haven't been able to post until just now. Wow let's see who said 35 was a possibility for Thor this week? Oh yeah that was me! ;)

OK I'm being facetious, but clearly audiences love this film, and has gained a strong audience who is attracting people who were perhaps not going to see the film to begin with. Of course I don't want to count my chickens before they hatched, so we'll see what the actuals are tomorrow, but I can't immagine it would be off by more than +/- 1 million or so.

I hope it can continue these legs, and 20M or more next week should be no problem even with Pirates coming out, which is already being blasted by the critics. I think 200 is a real possibility now. Clearly this is the "Star Trek" of 2011.

Really? I think it can rake in another $100 million opening easily, and the only pirates movie I've watched is the first one.

I don't think either film will effect the other one. Thor has been out long enough that it can easily make 20-25 mil and Pirates could still take in 100 M.

If Pirates fails to make 100M, it's because the critics are universally panning it. Starting out at 50%, it could end up at 35% by the time all the reviews are in. No way will it get a certified fresh rating.
