Thor's box office competition - Part 1

Well, all of the concern over Thor can finally be put to rest. It will join the upper tier of Marvel based movies (e.g. X-Men, Spider-Man. Iron Man). The possibility of a sequel is nearly assured at this point.

Yep and Thor's most likely going gross more than any of the X-Men films, even X-Men Last Stand.

I know inflation, 3D, & Imax helped, but I still thought I'd never see the day that a Thor film would gross more than the highest grossing X-Men film.

Yeah, I'm reading 32 million now. Still really good. Oh, and where's that guy that was pretending he thought Priest would do well? Apparently its opening take is 13-15 million.

I don't know about topping Last Stand. That film topped out at $454 million. Thor would have to make roughly $100 million more during the rest of its release. Between Pirates and Cap, I guess we'll have to see that will actually happen.

Poor Blackman. :csad:

The funny thing about Thor is that if it goes according to plan next next weekend, it will be the number 2 grossing film of the year. This hasn't been a good year at the box office. And for some reason I doubt Pirates do as well as the previous Pirate movies.

Wee Despite opening a good bit lower then Fast Five it looks like Thor has far stronger legs as it beat Fast Fives second weekend.

Yeah, but Thor's looking like it can top out at around 490-500 million, remember, Thor's only been out for 2 weeks in the US and 3 weeks internationally.

It will lose a whole lot of those 3D screens to Pirates though.

I think it'll top out around the 450 mark.

True, but there were some "cons" to Thor having so many 3D screens as well, it would've sold more tickets without it.

Yea true. I think whilst the vast amount 3D screens may have boosted the actual money gained, I think it also contributed to not as many tickets being sold. I've heard so many stories of people just not bothering to see it because they couldn't get to see it in 2D and they hate 3D. I can't really blame them. If I couldn't find 2D screenings I wouldn't have bothered. I don't care how well done the 3D is, it gives me a splitting head ache and I ain't paying 15s for cinema tickets.

This movie has only been out a couple weeks and its not like its being taken out of theatres any time soon. I feel confident Thor will reach 200 dom. and 450 WW at the end of its run.

Yeah, I've seen Thor 3 times and each time was in good ol' 2D.

My bad, I meant I've seen it all 3 times in good ol' 2D.

I don't think it'll hit 500 million. It'd be nice if it did, though. 500 million would not only ensure a sequel, but a threequel as well.

I'm thinking 450 million, give or take 15.

A sequel is already ensured.

At this point definitely. I was expecting it to tip toe passed 300 million this weekend; instead it smashed it, and is half way to 400. I'm a believer in Thor 2 now.

I think Thor proves that if you spend time improving the script, and have a competent director running things, the movie can turn out to be a winner. I still think the biggest problem with IM2 was the screenplay, and if they weren't rushing it out to meet the deadline, they could've addressed some of the problems inherent in the movie. Faverau did not say it but I think he was disappointed with the movie, hence his decision to bow out instead of doing IM3. Hopefully after the Avengers they will make sure the 3rd movie in the IM trilogy will have a strong script to shoot.

I actually like IM2, but I do think it suffered in that they tried to improvise way too much like they did on the first movie, and it worked. Alot of people blame the Avengers tie-ins, and other things, but I think you hit the nail on the head the problem was the script. Still a great movie IMO, but not as good as the 1st.

In no. 3, the villian had better be Mandarin, because it's likely Downey's last go round in the suit, at least as a solo franchise. Usually where most superhero film franchises burn out at the 3rd film, IM has a real advantage in that they saved the best for last.
