The Dark Knight Rises Tom Hardy as Bane

If they wanted a cartoonisly huge Bane they would have cast a bigger guy. I'm not exactly shocked at the news of him gaining weight because thats what actors do for certain roles.

I've only seen him in Inception so I don't know how good of an actor he is but he certainly got the job done in that film so I'll assume he'll get it done in Rises.

Preach!

Okay, clearly he is going to use steroids. It is impossible to gain close to thirty pounds of muscle in three months. It is only physically possible to gain 2-3.5 pound of muscle per month/ approx 1 pound a week. That is just the limitations of the human body. Sure the guy can eat and add 30 pounds of mass, but that doesn't mean it is muscle. Also, are people still wondering if Bale took steroids? Come on guys, of course he did. In six months it is "impossible!" to go from 120 and nearly dying to 190 and looking pretty darn fit. I don't care if you have the best food, trainers, supplements or whatever. I've been working out for ten plus years and have played college sports. I have never in my life seen anyone put on 30 pounds of muscle in 3 months even on steroids, let alone 70 pounds in six months!
This is Hollywood guys. This isn't the Olympics. No one is tested, and these guys have to look different for pretty much every role in very short amounts of time. I'm not downing their work ethic or athletic ability if and when they they do take steroids. I wish hardy would have started cycling a year ago.

I hate to beat a dead horse, but if you want a better idea of who Hardy is as an actor, check out Bronson.

A knockout performance in an otherwise mediocre film - effectively demonstrating both his range and intensity.

I've been meaning to get around to watching it.

I'm calling it now. Bane will not have Venom, nor will he give Batman a temporary paralysis-causing injury. Quote me. If I'm wrong, I'll wear a dress...not really.

I too doubt that he has Venom but I'm not going to agree about the back breaking thing. Thats just the type of out of left field thing that Nolan would do IMHO.

I think Venom will be featured. It just won't make Bane grow to the size of an elephant.

If these films can have a microwave emitter that conveniently doesn't effect humans, and a sonar device that maps environments in 3D, then they can have a next-gen performance-enhancing drug.

Whatever Bane does I'm sure will have some basis in one of his classic comic plots, whether it's an altered version of Knightfall or Bane of the Demon or something, like Joker's plot was reminscent of Killing Joke.

In other words, even if he doesn't break Batman's back, there's going to be something in there that makes us go "Oh, that's from _______!"

I think if all else, Nolan's Bane could be like Jason Bourne. Trained to be the perfect soldier until he became rogue. Probably doesn't remember much about his past either. :)

Agreed. As well as Scarecrow's fear toxin. Bane's venom is crucial to his character, I foresee an adrenaline/speed like drug that gives him a temporary advantage in strength and motor skills.

i would hate that. bane needs to be more than a trained soldier... he needs to be deeper than that... self-trained... following a self taught/created ideology... no forgotton past either... his past needs to have a heavy bearing on his actions... something the joker didn't have... and something bruce also has.

That's creatively vacant. No offense.

I personally think there will be venom in a revised capacity. I also doubt the back breaking thing simply because everyone is betting on it. While it's true that it would be something that's not done in every superhero movie, the fact that so many people expect it from Nolan makes it unlikely to me. I'd put my money on Batman's spirit being broken by Bane, his confidence shattered by being physically and mentally beaten. But it will be injuries that Bruce can overcome and be able to defeat Bane by the end of the movie. It's not called The Dark Knight Rises for nothing.

$1000 says he'll have a mask on at some point.

Or not. As someone not a fan of Bane at all, I'll rate his character over the hack wannabe James Bond failure.

He'll have a mask. I have no doubt about that.

Let's look at Nolan's track record with the villains, shall we?

Ra's al Ghul
-Was an eco-terrorist.
-Led a secret society of ninjas.
-Was "immortal."
-Had that exotic goatee-thing going.
-Wore a suave suit.

Jonathan Crane
-Was a psychiatrist with knowledge in psychopharmacology.
-Was a psychological sadist with a obsession with fear.
-Used fear toxin.
-Wore a burlap-sack mask.

The Joker
-Was a psychopathic anarchist/terrorist.
-Was obsessed with Batman.
-Had green hair.
-Had red lips.
-Had a white face.
-Wore a purple suit.

Harvey Dent
-Was once an upstanding, by-the-book District Attorney.
-Had half his face horribly disfigured.
-Had half of his suit jacket burned.
-Following the accident, believed that justice and order were determined by chance (the flip of a coin).

Crude summaries, but you get the point.

In terms of personalities, motives, and appearances, Nolan has been quite faithful to these characters - despite people constantly playing the realism card.

I don't see why Bane wouldn't follow suit.

Great post Boom.

All of Nolans villains have had their signature characteristics translated to the big screen. Banes could be his Mask or his Venom and I wouldn't be surprised if we get both.

For those of you skeptical about Nolan using Venom just because it's not t3h realism, take this into account.

-Nolan chose Bane, so obviously that means he considers him "t3h realistic:whatever:" enough.

-In Inception, Nolan introduced a device that when hooked up to a person, allowed them to enter another person's subconscious. The mechanics of this mysterious device were never explained. You knew what the device did, but not how it worked, and it didn't really matter.

I'll just leave you with that.

Why in the world would Bane not have a mask? That would be extremely silly. He's always worn a mask. Batman wears a mask, Catwoman wears a mask-- Bane can wear one too, if he wants. I'm surprised people are actually wondering about this.
