Supergirl Tyler Hoechlin IS Superman - Part 1

I've bee reading some Twitter posts and by god they're going crazy for Tyler Hoechlin's portrayal. The positive buzz is absolutely immense.

Hopefully the positive buzz guarantees that we'll see more of him. Hoechlin really was great in the premiere.

Tyler's Clark/Superman was like the versions I grew up with...in the comics, the first two Reeve films and George Reeves on TV in reruns. This hybrid Superman was AWESOME! To those who had concerns about him being the man of steel, CONCERNS PUT TO REST! I think in a couple of years, Superman will return to TV in his own show. His scenes with Melissa both as Clark/Kara and Superman Supergirl combined comic book fun with a chemistry equal to that of Worlds Finest from season 1 and Grant Gustin's The Flash and a loving cousin/brother-sister relationship. Yeah, looks like Superman has got "sway", but THIS IS STILL SUPERGIRL'S SHOW. And Melissa was cuter than ever...if that's ever possible.

One of my favorite moments. :funny:

People will disagree, but IMO, while Oliver and Barry should be very impressed and admire Superman's power, they should not be in complete awe of him or placed several levels below him in this universe if they ever meet. Oliver and Barry have faced and overcome very tough villains like Merlyn, Deathstroke, Ra's al Ghul (even in the comics, Ra's is A-list), Darhk (who was extremely powerful and dangerous), Reverse-Flash, Zoom and Vandal Savage. They have been through and overcome so much at this stage, that they deserve their place amongst this universes greatest heroes. It should be the same with Kara eventually IMO, after she beats more big villains.

...this is the first time I'm watching Supergirl, although I used to watch CW Flash and liked it.

The show in itself(the writing in particular) is just plain horrible. Its cheesy(not the good kind),cringeworthy and bored me. Superman's characterization seemed very one-dimensional, and I was honestly disappointed. While he nailed the confident, happy to help attitude, his character had zero depth and felt like a bad caricature and not a real person. Kara's character was cliche after cliche after cliche. I wanted to watch this show, but it's unbearable.

:hmm

Well… in the landscape of TV excellence, is Supergirl as good as The West Wing or (for a genre comparison) Jessica Jones? No - not even close. But grading on a curve, I think S02E01 was one of the series’ better episodes. I also think it compares favorably with the tone and quality of The Flash. So if you like that show (as you say you do) I'm puzzled by your negative response to SG. Seems to me, they're rather similar.

I'd watch a series of Tyler as Superman, he nailed it right out out of the gate.

Tyler was very charming as Superman. Cavill is still my favorite incarnation but Tyler is a welcome alternative. However, I dont mean to sound shallow but they NEED to improve his costume. Sorry, but it looks ugly. Especially those cape clasps. Get rid of them. I dont know who thought that would be a good idea.

I dont think he's entirely wrong. The show is flawed and is cliche and cringeworthy at times. In spite of that, I like it. Its enjoyable. I dont think one episode is going to be enough to sell a person. It didnt for me, but i was interested in Kara's arc last year and the stuff with her past. The show does have its serious moments and I think it shines when it goes in that direction and is less goofy.

Look I like Flash S1 because I thought it was well written, especially the villain, the characters were well written and rounded and the tone was bearable for me because all though Cisco was cheesy it didn't overwhelm me. I hated Iris and all that CW teen drama though.I just think it's a better show overall. But I'm just judging from one episode which is unfair. Supergirl the character was not well written imo because they were dealing with issues like "not sure what to do with alter ego" which is such a played out trope by now.And that conversation between Cat and Kara about their life choice was clichéd and cringy af for me.Superman felt very one dimensional and didn't feel like a real person to me. I liked Jimmy though.I thought the actors were good and the vfx was good for its budget.Maybe the show is just not for me.Dont worry I dont post much about things I don't like so I won't rain on this forums parade. Its cool that people have got a supes they love.As long as people don't put other things down to praise something I'm cool with it.

I am more hopeful that it gives good ratings to Supergirl and Supergirl can maintain those ratings in episodes with no Superman. I want a 3rd season.

The series will not maintain the ratings of these first two episodes....it will drop, but that is to be expected and not anything to freak out over, the ratings craziness is not as big of a deal this season as it was last season.

People should be able to chill a lot more this season and actually enjoy the show.

While I really enjoyed the direction of this Superman portrayal (a Superman who's not in a distressed emotional state, a Superman who we get to see have more 'regular person' dialogue with peers that's not about something plot-related), I think Hoechlin himself was the weakest part of it.

Whenever he got to do something over-the-top or comical, he was fine, but for a lot of the standard dialogue, especially the interaction with Kara, I thought a lot of it was delivered kinda poorly. I'm sure he'll get better though. First episodes are usually nerve-racking. Gustin was pretty weak in his first Arrow appearances as well (and is still pretty weak when it comes to some dialogue).

I'm just gonna say that I love Tyler's Superman. He was great. I hope he'll be back for more episodes and I agree with Sawyer that I enjoyed his Clark more than his Superman. His Superman was kinda one-note and cheesy but Tyler carried it really well so full marks to him.

For better or worse, Supergirl embraces a Silver Age-y/comic book-y sensibility. And as such, a certain amount of playfulness and lightheartedness comes with the territory. Now, if you’re into this sort of thing, it’s “charmingly nostalgic.” If you’re not, it’s “cringe worthy.” :cwink: In any case, it’s a particular stylistic approach to the material which is, arguably, legitimate.

Can't say I'm surprised really

But I am glad about the overwhelmingly positive response!

after watching it on xfinity on demand i say tyler is

superman-very akin to reeve's superman
clark-a cross between reeve, cain, and STAS Clark

very much a crowd pleasing superman and clark for old time superman
watchers.

I thought Hoechlin was great. Charming and confident. Fully formed. And the suit didn't look too bad.

One of my favorite moments. :funny:

I think that's fair, he is a crowd pleaser that's for sure but that's exactly what I think we needed with this Superman.

I've never watched Supergirl. Should I watch season 1 before dipping into season 2?

I would say yes but if you only want to watch what I would call the vital season one episodes I recommend the Pilot (Ep 1), Fight or Flight (Ep 3), Human For A Day (Ep 7), Hostile Takeover (Ep 8), Solitude (Ep 15), Manhunter (Ep 17), Worlds Finest (Ep 18), Myriad (Ep 19) and Better Angels (Ep 20). But honestly if you have time binge the whole season, it's really good and it only gets better as it goes on.

I loved this Fleischeresque Superman moment

Tyler definitely exceeded my expectations and I'm looking forward to seeing more of him.
