Supergirl Tyler Hoechlin IS Superman - Part 1

I just realized that Clark and Lois are like the only healthy and happy couple in the entire Arrowverse.lol

You mean flashbacks on this show? I'm talking about adventures that had nothing to do with Kara, though. The stuff that made Superman Superman to this world, that made him so revered. He's clearly had a lot of 'em. Hell, I even kinda wanna see their version of his origin (yes, I'm still desperate to see some version of Birthright on my screen someday, and I will grasp at any straw that gives me hope!). Wouldn't seem right to let him commandeer Supergirl's storylines for that purpose, imo.

Also, for the record, I am absolutely POSITIVE we will see him again on Supergirl after these two episodes. "When" may still be TBD, but the way Tyler and the EP's were talking before this aired and how well he's been received, there's no question of "If" for me.

Oh yeah I know but I meant to show his early relationship with Kara. But if he did get his own show we could always get flashbacks to his early career there too.

I would freaking love to see Birthright (probably be up for an animated version tbh) but we've seen Superman's early years so much I want to see more of the experienced Superman. I feel like a mini series with a cool arc maybe involving Mongul or Brainiac etc would be a great way to go.

Yeah I agree I think he'll be back, I think for sure we'll see some flashbacks aswell. Maybe going back to the missions with J'onn.

Not sure if this interview with Hoechlin has been posted but it's a good read.

Here's what he has to say (kind of) about BvS version of Superman and despite some comments he's made that could be construed one way he actually gives a respectable answer. I for one totally agree with this sentiment.

There was a feeling last year, especially after Batman v Superman, that we’d missed an opportunity to see the character realized onscreen as a symbol of that hope and optimism. Is that something you and [executive producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg] wanted to bring back and emphasize with your version?

Yeah, but again, it’s always fun to explore those other sides of it as well. I personally can’t compare and never do compare characters, especially when it’s the same character existing in different stories. They exist in their world and this one exists in his own, so they lend themselves to the story they’re telling.

One flashback I would like to see is something that helps explain why he seemed to be so absent during Kara's upbringing. Perhaps some event that caused the Danvers to ask him to keep his distance or something.

I'd definitely be down for a Brainiac or Mongul mini-series, but those are such huge global threats, I feel like they'd be obligated to include Kara in those stories if they are present-day tales (especially Brainiac, given their comics history), so they wouldn't entirely be Superman "solo" adventures, so to speak. And if they're gonna be joint Superman/Supergirl stories, they might as well make them arcs on Supergirl.

Maybe he did pop in for visits though they've never really confirmed one way or the other. But maybe you're right, reasons could be to protect her from something or someone.

True but I think Mongul you could do without her especially if you put Superman on War World.

I said this elsewhere, but anyone who thinks Clark was completely absent from Kara's life growing up totally took what Season 1 established about their relationship completely out of context and misconstrued it.

By that same token, anyone who thinks that Clark and Kara haven't previously talked about Krypton and his parents is taking their conversation at the end of The Adventures of Supergirl completely out of context and misconstruing it too.

Hoechlin's Superman was great. I think if we had seen that Superman on the big screen even for Superman Returns, then Superman would be a popular hero again and audiences would be flocking to see him. They haven't put that version in theatres but either one that is somewhat stalkerish or one that is remote, stoic and unsmiling.

Hoechlin's Superman comes as a breath of fresh air, and since so many people are praising him, it seems that this is what audiences have been wanting to see. When he's done right, and kept faithful to the comics, then people don't seem to think that he is an outdated and irrelevant superhero.

BTW, wasn't there a picture of Superman taking a picture with those bystanders? Or was that just a behind-the-scenes snapshot? I thought it was actually going to be in the episode, but I don't see it happening now, unless it happens in the next one.

Oooh yes, I would like that a lot! Towards the end of last season, when Kara went to the fortress looking for Clark, Kalex told her that he was "dealing with a matter off-world." They could totally do something like that again to sort of keep things connected, and then give us a little mini-series or TV movie showing Clark's adventure on Warworld. A live-action Supes adventure set in space/on another planet? I would kill for this, lol.

You know what would be good? If Superman faces Non later this season. You have to wonder why he didn't show up in a big way last season. But since Superman and Non battled it out on the big screen in Superman 2, it would be great if they go at it again.

What are the chances of Zod ever appearing in this show? And how about Ursa or Faora? Or should they be saved for a potential Superman spin-off? Should other characters like Braniac or Doomsday also be saved? If they use them up on Supergirl, and then they decide to make a spin-off, there won't be anyone for Superman to face that he or his cousin haven't faced already.

Im a fan of Superman Returns and I love the DCEU but I totally agree with this comment. I think in 2006 people wanted to see a Superman that was all the things Hoechlin's was and they also wanted the have a good time with the film. What they got though was a pale imitation of Superman the Movie. What Supergirl did so well in 'The Adventures of Supergirl' was give us a Clark Kent/Superman who held onto some elements of the Reeve version but was also a new interpretation with the right comic elements to boot. The main thing is that it was just fun and in 2006 I think people were shocked that we didn't get that. I think had Singer paid homage to the Donner film as they did here but update Superman to be like this version then I think it would certainly have been a much bigger hit of a film. One thing Singer did that I agreed with was he didn't redo the origin, it didn't need to be done then (although I think because of SRs it did need doing after).

I didn't know I suddenly needed this! I'd love to see an occasional miniseries with Tyler's Superman to fill in the gap. Make each episode have a higher budget etc.

So when are they gonna announce plans for his spinoff?

I like the idea of having a separate mini-series.

I could see some say...6 episode arcs to play during the hiatus in January and February of the show. That would be cool for sure.

Kind of do a "X-Files" type of thing that Fox did....

Yes I think this would benefit all tbh, it wouldn't interfere with the current shows and it also wouldn't interfere with the movies.

That bolded statement is probably the reason Hoechlin just became my second-favorite version of the character behind Reeve. The portrayal, as well as the suit, is a nice blend of classic and modern, and it was a pleasant surprise.

When he was first cast and that horrendous promo pic came out, I severely criticized his casting and the costume. But when I finally saw the episode yesterday, it was the first time in years I felt a genuine sense of joy seeing Superman on screen. I was smiling like an idiot the whole way through. It was really beautiful.

His mannerisms as Clark Kent was shy and adorkable but yet quit steely when it came to his journalistic sensibilities--a perfect mix for the modern world. And his Superman was confident with a lot of that bravado and optimism which was surely missed. The way he talked and shook hands with those DEO agents was SUPERMAN. That wink was so classic and he really has a certain gravitas about him. Very charming to watch. Hell I might be a little presumptuous but he might be my second favorite Superman after Reeve.

To quote the great man himself "absolutely" :cwink:

Add a 1/2 cup of chris reeve's superman to a 1/4 of cup of STAS superman and 1/4 of Hochlyn's superman and place to one side. Now mix half a cup of Cain's CK and another quarter cup of john newton hyme's CK with 1/4 of hocklyn's CK and put the mixture to the side.
Now take both the superman and the CK mixtures and hand them over to Henry cavill and brandon routh to mix a vigorously as possible (we apologize everyone since our electric mixture is broken).
Place the superbeef cake in the over and let it cook over.....2 yrs until superman 80th birthday! bon apetite!!
