Venom Venom's Box Office Thread

I love that this movie is making money. If SONY could correct the mistakes of the first one, they could have a billion dollar character on their hands.

Crazy to think this movie is going to make more than TASM 2 domestically and overseas while doing worse with the critics.

I have to give a non-sarcastic congrats to my favorite villain. I may not like how it was done, but it speaks VOLUMES to his crazy popularity that this movie is making this much money! I honestly think the lack of MCU connection may be somewhat HELPING this film instead of hurting it. You can go in blind, and you need no prior knowledge of anything. Probably a bit refreshing. Now, don't think I'm against the MCU, far from it! I just think the GA probably enjoyed a full meal that didn't pull a punch or two or need to tie in to another film or two.

One of the reasons why Venom has done so well in China is the fresh approach to a CBM. The Chinese audience weren't able to see DP, Skwad & DP2 so Venom's sort of anti-hero methods seem unique to them.

The six week barren run after Ant Man & The Wasp & MI: Fallout's release helped a lot as well. There was a good deal of pent up demand for a Hollywood blockbuster as it was evidenced from the massive pre-sales.

But it is a fair point to be made that Venom's success over all does not save Sony Pictures & Sony Pictures is not out of anything just because of a few recent band aid hits
Luckily, Venom isn't meant to be and isn't seen as the savior of Sony Pictures. If anyone expected it to be, they're dreaming. It's a film that made way more money than many expected or wanted it to, much to the chagrin of many here, I'm sure.

Spider-man himself isn't the savor of Sony pictures. many assumed Sony are standing on Spider-mans shoulders alone to keep going. but they really ain't.

if anything Venom has given Sony a pretty nice profit though since they broke even around the $300 mil mark and the rest of those millions are now profit. so if we undermine Venom for its box office then really Homecoming was a big let down too.

This has done so well despite doing badly on a number of metrics. This is a billion dollar grosser when they get everything right.

What a run from Venom! I hope Sony do a director's cut on DVD. Tom Hardy says there were more scenes but got cut.

It's insane. I predicted $700+ in the poll ^ (my wild dream choice) and it looks like it actually might get there! Also, yess, I'd love a DC, or at least a bonus feature with all of Hardy's improvisation scenes

Yes, didn't he say many of his favourite scenes were cut?

IIRC, he was saying many of his favorite things that he did on set (including dancing and singing or something), and things he enjoyed doing as an actor/performer -- a lot of improv stuff -- didn't make it into the movie, not necessarily his favorite 'scenes'. He said they weren't anything that added or took away from the plot or story. Just stuff he personally had a good/fun time filming

Oh right, gotya, thanks for clarifying that for me.

After China is done it looks like it could be well past that!

Yep! It's literally insane. This could in all likelihood break $800M :wow:

So happy for Fleischer and the team and Hardy. Can't deny they put a lot of heart and effort into the (relatively small budgeted) movie  They crafted something different and unique, and that, for better or worse, went against against the grain and what was typical or expected. Not easy to do, they had to know the risk they were taking, but stuck with it anyway. Not a perfect movie by any stretch, but one I thoroughly enjoyed

And apparently it's China opening was the biggest ever for any single-character Marvel title. Damn

RIP STAN LEE without whom we would not have Spider-Man and consequently Venom

Absolutely. So unbelievably sad... he was my childhood (and adult) hero :csad: :csad: :csad: RIP Stan the Man, you'll be unimaginably missed. Hope you're webslingin' up in Heaven :waa:

Venom v Spiderman is next guys, bank on it....somehow. I'm betting Sony's execs are trying to figure out a way to make that happen as we speak.

Venom v. Spiderman: Dawn of the Symbiotes. They fight each other then team up against Carnage

Then after comes Jumanji League. The team up of Venom/ Spidey and the Jumanji team...1.5 billion confirmed :o

Spiderverse is next, then morbius, kraven etc... i think we have a while before venoms sequel and a spiderman return. At least i hope so.

Yes! I would love to see those scenes. Maybe they can do a PG-13 release on the sequel and an R-Rating for the DVD. That would be nice.

I also voted for 700+ but realistically I thought it would just go for 600-650ish. I did wish that it would go beyond 700+ because I liked and enjoyed the movie so much. Now it's really happening. I can't believe it! With its run It might pass 800+, I hope.

I don't see that happening. A crossover between MIb or Ghostbusters for Jumanji is more than likely.

‘Venom’ Throttles $700M WW, Propels Sony To $2B+ Overseas Box Office In Best Time Since 2012

EXCLUSIVE: On the back of a record-setting opening weekend in China, Sony’s Venom is bonding with a handful of new milestones. With today’s grosses, the Tom Hardy-starrer crosses $700M worldwide, and will hit $500M overseas tomorrow. What’s more, the film is propelling Sony past $2B at the international box office for 2018. That benchmark, one that has not been achieved so early in the year by the Culver City studio since October 31, 2012, was topped through Monday with a total $2.001B.

Based on the Marvel property, the Ruben Fleischer-helmed Venom has been a superhero for Sony since it began its run last month, breaking domestic and global October opening records in its early play. Through Monday, it was at $688.5M worldwide — and with today’s China’s haul ($11.6M), it morphs across $700M to $700.1M. The offshore total through Monday was $481.5M. Figuring Tuesday’s Middle Kingdom add, that lifts to $493.1M, meaning Wednesday will push it over half a billion overseas. It is looking likely to get to $800M worldwide.

On its second domestic weekend, Venom pushed Sony across $1B at the North American box office. Offshore, it continued to be the lead film for three weekends straight, and reclaimed that spot this past session with the coursing China debut.

Despite a critical drubbing, reviews have proved to be anything but toxic to turnstile traffic. As with much of the play around the world, the Middle Kingdom start this weekend was fueled by audiences who have embraced the tone and the character. In China, where studios recoup 25% of the gross, Venom partner Tencent helped spread the positive word of mouth.

The China gross is now $134.8M through today, followed by Russia ($32.3M), Korea ($30.1M), the UK ($26.1M), Mexico ($24.1M) and France ($19.1M) — outside China, those are numbers through Monday.

Sony’s offshore success this year has also been fed by Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation ($358.4M), Peter Rabbit ($236M), The Equalizer 2 ($88.4M) and holdover play from Christmas juggernaut Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle ($398.6M in 2018).

When parent Sony Corp reported Q2 earnings at the end of October, it boosted the Pictures segment’s outlook for the full year ending March 31 by 6%, expecting the division to reach $443.6M (50B yen). This was as the July-September period notched a $209M profit, thanks in part to the robust global box office of HT3. Venom will factor in the next quarter’s report.

Back in 2012, among Sony’s big pics to help push it past $2B offshore in October were The Amazing Spider-Man, MIB 3 and the first Hotel Transylvania. Ahead this year, Sony still has the animated Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse which releases in mid-December, and Holmes And Watson in the holiday corridor.

I'd def be on board with that  I could see it working, if they went into filming with that mindset (2 versions) from the outset.

I also voted for 700+ but realistically I thought it would just go for 600-650ish. I did wish that it would go beyond 700+ because I liked and enjoyed the movie so much. Now it's really happening. I can't believe it! With it's run It might pass 800+, I hope.

:db:

So freakin crazy

Lol, Venom is the highest grossing film in Russia in 2018. People love Tom Hardy.

Yes they certainly do! I think the movie (imo at least) being highly enjoyable and entertaining, and mostly importantly self-contained, has really drawn people in and won them over. This films'' legs and audience scores are clearly evidence that this wasn't just a front-loaded hype machine or anything

I appreciated his seal-of-approval cameo. It put to rest the idea that the film was somehow an embarrassment to the Marvel legacy.

Same. I had that exact same thought when I saw it :D I was so happy. It made everything feel at home  And I even really enjoyed his cameo in it, one of his better, more natural ones, I'd say

:funny: I really want to see that!

Next movie should be Spider-Man vs venom maximum carnage.
