The fact that it will rival the box office of Spider-man: Homecoming despite Venom's considerably smaller budget is proof positive that Venom is connecting with more than just previously-existing fans. Venom's name recognition accounts for some of the early buzz, but the film is obviously standing on its own merits with audiences.

I think we're officially past the point where people can say Venom has a wide appeal, has a big fan base, etc. People are clearly liking this film for what it is, and this is in no way a situation like SS. There's been virtually no change in the narrative/opinions with Audiences -- they generally liked it when it came out, and they still feel the same. This looks like a rare case where people genuinely saw/got past critic reviews, and realize it's actually a good film for what it is and set out to be
