The Last Stand

Arnold is back and it's nice seeing him kick some ass in this movie. I was really surprised that it was more drama than comedy especially since Johnny Knoxville is in this. Luis Guzman and Jamie Alexander were also great in this, the chemistry between Arnold and Luis was solid. I kinda wish there were more memorable Arnold lines other than the few we got and the final showdown with the cars is pretty creative.

Mama

While Guillermo del Toro was just a producer on it, it very much feels like a Guillermo del Toro film. The more it went on the more it felt like Juan Antonio Bayona's The Orphanage. There were some jump scares but every now and then you get a clever scare.
8/10

Gangster Squad - 8/10

I don't know what the hell the reviews are talking about. I guess every gangster film must be like The Untouchables and L.A. Confidential where it must be deep and ultra dramatic to be good. This had a good three act structure with everything being pretty clear. I'm glad to see this period gangster film having fun with itself in its characters and violence. I also dug how comic booky it was at times. It's pure gorgeous looking fluff, and that's okay because I enjoyed it.

Same here, I love it as a pulp gangster film.

Yeah, that's where its charm is at. It's like a pulp comic a kid would pick up during that time period and just read it for fun.

And it's a good dudes movie too.

Exactly my thoughts. I just thought the Gosling/Emma Stone stuff didn't need to be in the film.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D - actually surprised it was pretty decent, I thought it would mostly have hick Sheriff's like R. Lee Ermey's character in the previous TCM's, and the brunette had a tight little bod on her.

Mama - wasn't expecting really much with a PG-13 rating but mostly saw it for Jessica Chastain's turn as a goth rocker Hot Topic wearing chick, and the ending almost made me teary.

Haunted House - or as I call it the real Scary Movie 3 sequel if the Wayans were still involved, funny at times and the humor derived from the situantions and not having to insert a spoof of whatever current hot movie is out there.

Jack Reacher (2012)

I haven't seen rough around the edges, stripped down thriller like this in a long time. Tom Cruise is gloriously manly in this movie. I would love for those Christopher McQuarrie doing Mission Impossible 5 rumours to be true.

The only thing that bugged me was showing the culprit to the audience first rather than letting us solves the mystery alongside Reacher.

I really needa watch True Romance was just talking to somebody about it earlier. Can't believe I've never seen it. Anyways

Primer.

Pretty damn good. Weird, but good. Cool take on time travel

Cotton Club - 3/10

Benny's Video - Couldn't finish it/10

Are people really putting those two in the same category? LA Confidential is a smart movie for grownups. The Untouchables is a goofy melodrama.

Never would've worked. If you played the opening without seeing the shooter, you'd immediately know that the movie was holding something back and that it couldn't be Barr.

Uhm yeah... that's kind of the whole point of a mystery movie is that it's never cut and dry. Putting the audience ahead of the protagonist is always a bad move.

Sorry, I disagree. I liked that Jack Reacher didn't try to play that game. By not showing the shooter, the movie would've been treating the audience as stupid and the reveal that it wasn't Barr would not have been some huge revelation. If they don't show the shooter's face then it can't be Barr. One way or the other, we would've known it wasn't him, so I'm glad they trusted us to keep up without some phony third act twist to keep us "interested."
