Apocalypse X-Men: Apocalypse Box Office Prediction Thread - Part 3

I feel you. But even I'm tired of getting hopes up/dashed over and over and over and over again. After Storm had little to do in DoFP I reasoned to myself "Well, XA will mark a new beginning with Storm--new actress, set in the 80s, Cairo, mohawk--we'll make up for it then." And no, I wasn't thrilled when they announced she'd be a horseman, but then I thought to myself, "Well, she'll get more focus this way instead of being lost in shuffle with Jean, Scott, Xavier, etc. But nope. She ended up being sidelined for the majority of the film in Magneto's shadow instead.

See, we continue to give FOX, Singer, Kinberg the benefit of the doubt. But all they do is trifle with our goodwill. And that's why they're getting this embarrassing $65 milliono opening. People are over it now. I'd rather them just take a minute and figure out what the hell they're doing.

I agree with you and though I really expected more from Storm in this movie I truly feel that a story as big as Apocalypse just couldn't fit everything in one movie so a lot of people were shortchanged. Jean had her big moment in the moment but neither her nor Cyclops,Storm or Nightcrawler really had big roles in this so I can understand it simply being an introduction. I can understand why people are fed up though we've waited so long and they are just now changing things and it may be to late. I just hope they don't go back on the comic accurate costumes or giving us a bit more action or give less focus to Cyclops or Storm because of this movie. I really don't know if by the next one it will even be fixed because it's like you get excited then let down. They truly need to focus on the XMen get rid of Magneto for awhile, give Mystique a break and focus on the core team and I think that will help. I'd much prefer them giving the reins to someone else instead of making us wait 4-5 yes for another main XMen film I don't think that's fair at all. I like other XMen but I could honestly care less about seeing some of them onscreen if they aren't my favorites there's no reason for us to suffer because they messed up and I hope that isn't the case.

The bottom line is Halle Berry is much bigger household name than any of them--and that is a fact. Hell, Jennifer Lawrence is a bigger name too. So what exactly are you debating here?

I am debating that it matters for selling movie tickets. Research shows that there is little association between the participation of movie stars in a film and box office performance. So, I disagree that star power is the most important problem and that hiring A-listers is the key to performing better at the box office.

"So half of the films in this top 15 list had A-listers and half didn't. Are there any X-Men films on that list? I didn't think so. Where is the relevance?"

It is relevant because it shows that having a movie star is not essential or even relevant to performing strongly at the box office. You argue that the lack of star power is the problem. That would seemingly suggest that having more movie stars is the key to boosting box office.

Yet, do movies with movie stars consistently fare better than those without them? Not really.

Gavin Polone in "Vulture"

"My review of past box-office performance shows little correlation between “star vehicles” and hits. Looking at last year’s top 100 films at the U.S. box office (excluding animated pictures, which don’t succeed or fail because of movie stars’ voices, and sequels, which shouldn’t count as star vehicles), I see 21 starless films that, given their reported production budgets, probably made money. The list includes Thor, Planet of the Apes, Captain America, The Help, Bridesmaids, Super 8, Immortals, War Horse, and Dolphin Tale. Using that same criteria, I see 21 star vehicles (movies led by someone who, in the recent past, had starred in another hit movie) that made money. Then I looked at the probable money-losers in the top 100. As far as I can tell, there was just one starless movie that lost money, Sucker Punch, while there were sixteen money-losers with touted, proven names, including Cowboys & Aliens, Red Riding Hood, and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close."

Star vehicles: 21 movies that made a profit and 16 that didn't
Movies without stars: 21 that make a profit and 1 that did not

So, having a movie star is not necessary to making a successful movie and it does not seem to help all that much.
That suggests that having a story that people want to see leads to strong performance, and having a movie star makes little difference. Having a name that people know will not sell movie tickets if the story does not appeal, and movies with appealing stories have succeeded without any marquee names.

My point is having a name everyone knows does not sell that many movie tickets. Instead, having a story that people like and want sells movie tickets.

Instead of focusing on getting names that people know, Fox should focus on telling interesting stories that audiences have not seen before and doing so well. Getting a household name on the A-list to give a mediocre performance in an uninteresting story would not lead to dramatically better profits for Fox.

Sorry but Halle Berry is not a big household name anymore as she was around the time the first XMen came out let's not reach here. Plenty of the cast we have now are bigger than her. I'm really not even interested anymore in seeing them in an ensemble cast half of them don't even have the "star power" y'all speak of anymore. The ship has sailed and I 100% believe they won't go back to them regardless they'll likely reboot completely before that. As it is now we have the new cast and they are moving forward with them.

This place is a **** show right now. It's the #1 movie in the world again for the 2nd week in a row. it didn't do as well as other CBM this year but it's still the best one of 2016 imo. This place I'm going to take a few weeks off from this place I think. Can't stand all the think pieces.

Not even gonna lie.
Im gonna Miss you bro

I recently read that the fallout between Berry and Singer was because he basically had underage boys (implied there was inappropriate relations) on the X-Men set and she was not okay with it and told the studio, so he tried to make life difficult for her. I don't know which X-Men movie but that's how it went down. There was that documentary about pedophilia in Hollywood that came out a while ago and Singer was named in it. I don't doubt it, you can tell by the people he surrounds himself with. :csad: I don't know how people on this forum feel about it or how it stands but is it what it is. :csad:

What? I knew he was gay(explains the casting of so so Sophie Turner) and had no problem with him but underaged kids is sick. I never been a Singer fan. I will give him credit that his xmen films didn't suck but they weren't good xmen films at all. Fox needs to bring in Marvel

This weekend (and tomorrow) domestically is not going to do favors for any movie.

This seems like a flop who sets out to be 4th place out if four so far? I'd be surprised if Strange & SS don't outgrows X-Men as well.

the meltdowns have started here. I'm sure Fox is having a meltdown too. They should just call this a buzz/experimental movie, just like labels/singers call a single a "buzz single" if it flops

These numbers are hardly "apocalyptic". Yes, under performing. But, Fox can handle a few under performers and not reboot.

^^ agreed. People are overreacting lol
(I mean I'm not saying the numbers are good or anything but yeah)

Yeah, Halle Berry really saved that Catwoman movie.
Right :oldrazz:

Can they handle movies like that though I never heard of a buzz movie it takes a lot more money for a movie rather than a song. It's not a drastic flop i would just call it underperforming which I really hope is enough to open there eyes and make them realize the repetive storylines are old and they need to bring on someone else who will bring in fresh ideas and utilize the characters properly for the next movie.

What? How does him being gay have to do with Sophie Turner?

This place is making me sad. Accusations are now flying everywhere, accusations which have little to do with the actual movie (like Singer's underaged kids thing).

Also, I guess it makes sense that there are more people coming out of the woodwork to post on these forums in light of the release of the movie, but it's funny how those who have been disappointed with the films have suddenly taken over the board when previously they had little to say. I guess negative passions do make people post more.

People are seriously overreacting. If this film is a 'flop' (and it won't even be a flop, it will just underperform), would the actual apocalypse come? Singer has already said that he will be gone from the directing chair regardless so those who don't like his vision get their wish. The worst case scenario is that we won't get the flagship X-movies for a while, but we have all the other X-universe movies to tide us over (movies, which, in Deadpool and New Mutants' case at least, have passionate fans in the director's chair).

The only thing that would be wasted is the young cast, but I highly doubt Fox will recast them so soon, especially since they have the star power of Sophie Turner, the immense likability of Evan Peters as Quicksilver and audiences have received them warmly.

I love them but I'll say it. The First Class cast was never hot with the masses (Remember how so many swore it would break out to $200M+ box-office back in 2011? I do.. and I specifically remember saying it would be the lowest-grossing installment). So much so their own sequel (not unlike what happened to the Man of Steel sequel) was morphed into Days of Future Past to integrate the "old favorites" back instead. Gave the example a few days ago that going back to the First Class cast would be like returning to the Tokyo Drift cast after Fast & Furious 4.

This could have been the Fast Five or Furious Six of the series, if only!

Its safe to saythat more people went to see the films featuring the original cast (which includes DOFP) than the films that featured the First Class cast. Oh well. Fox had TOO MUCh faith for that cast and once again they let Magneto/Mystique took over the show and even if they focused on marketing the younger ones, I don't think it would have been enough. Is Fox gonna gamble two more films with the younger version of Cyclops, Storm and Jean? I don't think they should.

You are delusional if you think that would've happened.

I'm kinda feeling nervous about the movie's ww gross.

DOFP's WW gross was helped tremendously by the Chinese box office. I don't see the same miracle happening to XMA.
