Though a change in director and writers are ways to address the disappointing BO, a long term concern is that the X-Men are nowhere near as popular as they were during their 90s hey day. Singer's first film was green lit based largely on the popularity of the animated series and arcade game. But the preteens who grew up watching that show and playing the side scroller are now well into their 30s and the last animated program went off the air in 2009. Where are the new X-Men fans expected to come from?
A core reason is the split rights arrangement between Disney and FOX, and can be seen in the treatment of New Mutants vs Black Panther. Both have films in 2018, but one character had a star turn in a billion dollar film, a high profile comic from an award winning author, action figures, Halloween costumes, etc. The FOX characters, on the other hand, have zero visibility.
Disney pushed Deadpool prior to his BO smash and the two studios are collaborating on TV, so there's hope we'll see more cooperation going forward. I think it's essential for FOX to keep the series viable.
^^^ Yes completely agree with both yours and zarex posts. I was coming in here to post the same thing. That no matter what X-Men isn't popular. You can ask any person on the street now who is Captain America, Black Widow, Thor, Ant-Man, Hawkeye etc and they will know. Ask them to name an X-Men character and you'll probably get Wolverine. Maybe Storm and Cyclops. They're not a big deal anymore like they used to be. The 90s and early 00s were when the X-Men were at the height of their popularity. But there's nothing there for them to be hooked into the new generation. No toys or cartoons. All of my nephews don't want to watch X-Men. They don't like them. But they'll watch every marvel movie. All of my cousins and nephews have avengers toys but they don't know any X-Men. Look at the cast even. When Jen was cast she had never watched X-Men. Same for Tye. But James, Michael, Oscar, Olivia knew them because they were around for them during the height of their popularity. Kodi, Sophie, Alexandra had seen the movies.
I think what Fox need is that extra support from marvel. But they also need to be smarter. Look you can cast relative unknowns for roles. Yes it has worked with Hugh and Jen but you also need to realise that the actors you cast need to have a certain amount of buzz behind them. That's why Marvel win when it comes to casting. They've made so many smart decisions when it comes to casting. To me they haven't casted wrong at all.
This franchise is 16 years old. I just think its growing stale and getting repetitive. They have been releasing a film every 2 or 3 years since 2000. They have gone through cast changes and the continuity/timelines is bizarre. As good as DOFP was and getting the old band back together it couldn't outdo a previous Xfilm from 2006 domestically. That speaks volumes when ticket prices have risen. I think they lost some of the older audience and failed to gain new ones with this latest flick.
That's just it I don't even know if they've gained many new fans. I'd say the people who've stuck around with the franchise are still here. I've been here since day 1. Not saying there aren't new fans but yeah I think the people who are seeing it are the true fans. And yes the timeline change, dated eras etc are all a factor into why it's not measuring up and performing like it should be.This franchise is 16 years old. Good points about the over all appeal of the X-men.
Fox and Marvel are not on good terms though so I don't see either working together, though it would be nice.
to be fair, the X-Men movies did not particularly cater to children while Disney mainly produces feel-good family Marvel movies to be able to sell toys and merchandise to little children...Disney is not so much about quality movies but about the merchandise possibilities.
I don't think that's true. They aren't just making these movies to sell toys. Big box office movies always have action figures and toys, books, movie tie ins etc. It's just an added bonus they make money. They're not making these huge movies just to sell toys. Marvel there is passion in what they create. They've thought out their stories and make sure they all tie in. They make sure the characters are done justice and given the proper development they deserve.to be fair, the X-Men movies did not particularly cater to children while Disney mainly produces feel-good family Marvel movies to be able to sell toys and merchandise to little children...Disney is not so much about quality movies but about the merchandise possibilities.
But for sure Marvel's strategy to block X-Men from this particular young tageted group (no cartoon shows anymore, no toys, no merchandise, barely any comic book series etc.) will help to undermine the X-Men as a brand for sure!
Without playing to much into conspiracy theories but blocking Fox from showing X-Men at IMAX cinemas with Alice suely also had an influence on the boxoffice.
Honestly I don't know. I don't know if a sequel to Apoclaypse will work and I don't know if the original cast will work. It's so strange right now. If they reboot it just won't make sense either because they've planned all these other movies.Nail on the head.
And honestly I dont know what X-Men can do, moving forward, in order to keep the series going strong.

I don't see why everyone thinks that being closer to the source material is gonna solve all the problems this franchise has.Bring series back to it's roots. And I dont think here Charles-Magneto relationship. That should have been done, killed and burried long fricking time ago. To give it fresh start, franchise needs to focus on new characters. Jean, Cyclops, Storm, Beast (hope for recast or bring Kelsey back) needs to be main characters and others with Charles in background. And franchise needs to start focus on new different storylines which dont follow Charles and Magneto bromance, along with having true X-men team. We need to have those small moments between characters and relationship bonds, and in same time we need stay true to source material. So no more Raven bulls***, no more Magneto walking away in sunset with Charles we meet again, no Kingberg anywhere close to this franchise. And I would say no more Singer as he is incapable after 16 years to make true X-men movie close to source material, give all characters proper adaptation, make from X-men's a team, give nods to fans, have actual costumes etc. What is done is done. They can all go *** themself if you ask me.
Still, the film, made for $178 million, has already made $185.8 million internationally. Fox had looked to keep expectations in check for the film, directed by Bryan Singer. It stars "X-Men" regulars Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and others, but it introduces a number of newcomers, including Oscar Isaac, Tye Sheridan and Olivia Munn.
Chris Aronson, distribution head for Fox, called it not a reboot but "a readjustment" to pave the way for future installments featuring the new performers.
"I'm very pleased," Aronson said. "It's right on track with what our expectations were going in."
