So, how is the box office doing?

Underwhelming

Let's take a pitch meeting from the guys that directed You, Me and Dupree. Ok.
Are you saying they couldn't possibly grow as filmmakers, especially in another genre? Because that would of course be ridiculous. I also ask Singer why he can't make action look that good, like a pair of journeymen. :hehe:

You've consistently demonstrated how uninformed you are, but you keep digging yourself an even deeper hole. I'd recommend taking this conversation elsewhere (specifically the Captain America boards where you can be pointed to the numerous quotes and interviews that show what an important role the Russo bros have at Marvel) as it isn't on topic.

Im not here to defend Bryan Singer but he directed the Nightcrawler sequence as well as Deathstrike vs Wolverine, the plane rescue in Superman Returns, the opening of Future Past in Moscow as well as the Quicksilver sequences. The man knows how to direct action as well as anyone.

Go ask Joss Whedon how much freedom Marvel directors really have.

There are franchises with billion dollars that tell great stories. But, some stories are a bit too out there to be prime candidates for a billion dollars.
It also seems to depend on tapping the zeitgeist.

X-Men is "too out there" to potentially make a billion? Sorry, but that sounds like BS to me.

Different situation. Feige ousted Ike and dissolved the creative committee after that I believe. So any complaints you have from him, Taylor etc. can probably be chalked up to those people micromanaging. The way you could chalk up everything wrong with Fox prior to this decade to Tom Rothman.

GO SEE IT!

Don't be discouraged folks. If my opinion and many others' in the theater I was in hold any weight, I thought it was a fun ride. Yes the ending is ridiculous, but I loved it. I got all the feels.

I love me some Russos. They are definitely in my top 3, along with Bird and Nolan.

That's a great top 3. I've at least liked every one of the movies these guys have directed. (Have only seen the two Cap movies from the Russos though). I even had fun with Tomorrowland despite the poor reception it received. That's beside the point of the thread though. lol.

Anyway, what I think would help the X-men do better at the box office is a brand new set of films, set in the present day "dead pool" time period. Have a great first film kinda re-establishing these heroes with just a small core team, like the Avengers. Focus on the team aspects. Make sure to 100% nail the characters, spreading screen time evenly amongst them. Make the movie such a fun ride, not unlike Avebgers, Jurassic world, force awakens, etc, that people will be telling their friends and family "you've gotta go check out this new x men movie!".

With Singer's comments, it looks like lifting the critic embargo early got that Singer/Fox closed door meeting rolling sooner rather than later. Donner probably had a sit down and said, "we need to go in another direction." I think Singer is done as a director for this franchise. Absolutely have him as a producer. Let him have input on the heir apparent. But he's done. You don't get to come back three times. That's just overkill.

Bird directed The Incredibles which stands up to any live action superhero film in terms of quality.

I think it just might be my favorite one. I flop back and forth from Toy Story 3 to Incredibles when it comes to favorite animated film

The Incredibles is still the best Fantastic Four movie ever made.

Totally off topic, but the other day I watched about half of the Tim story F4 movie on Netflix. I've gotta say, it isn't great, but there's a lot there to like. I think it's a much mire enjoyable film than the new fantastic four. The main heroes are likeable. Johnny Storm is a lot of fun. NYC feels a lot more present, and it doesn't feel like the whole film was shot inside. Plus the whole Ben Grimm storyline is pretty well done and you really feel for him.

I will never understand why one cannot acknowledge the faults in the things you like, while also acknowledging the strengths in things you don't like. As much as I loved Apocalypse, I'm not going to lie and say that there aren't very valid concerns about the cinematography in the final fight. It coming down to essentially to "beam spam" is something I've seen happen to another franchise. Granted, this is a bit more likely to happen in this franchise, due to the nature of many of the villain's powers. And while my reactions to the past three years of MCU movies has been "meh", that does not mean that they are necessarily mediocre films. They just don't do it for me.

As to the box office, we may just have to admit that the franchise at this point is not a billion dollar grossing franchise. And that is okay. As long as Fox plans accordingly. This is a 16 year old franchise. It will have its ups and downs, like all franchises. The MCU will have a down turn eventually. Will it become one. Perhaps. But despite what fanboys think, it isn't easy to hit a billion, especially with a strong dollar.

I think the X-men can handle an underperformer and not feel the need to reboot. Especially with that nice, young, cheap cast they just got.

Age of Ultron did have that "beam spam" moment, but it featured one of the most glorious shots in any CBM. Unfortunately I don't remember any such incredible shot like that in Apocalypse. I would've loved a great team shot.

What comments are you referring to? Did he say something recently? Spill the beans.

It would've been cool to have a splash shot moment like the opening Sokovia fight in AoU. The Lagos/Sokovia openings in CW/AoU are the kind of superhero moments I want to see in an X-Men film. Hopefully the next X-Men film will open with an action beat from the actual X-Men. That would a plenty good way to show how the X-Men operate now.

I don't quit remember anything like that in AoU. But, I didn't exactly see it a lot of times. But, when it is probably a good 10 min of Apocalypse standing there while others shoot their stuff at him, that is the kind of beam spam issue I'm talking about. The Godzilla movies in the 90s kind of fell into that trap, partially due to the suit, where most of the monster action was them shooting their beams at each other.

I assume he is talking about Singer saying that he won't direct X-men movies forever. To be fair, he has been talking about this break for quite some time now.
